I This invention aims to provide a novel scraper, adapted to be mounted on the running board ofan automobile, novel means being provided for mounting the scraper and holding it in-working position, as well as in an out of the way posltion.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention, mounted on the runn ng board of a vehicle.
' Figure 2 is a bottom plan, the scraper being shown extended in solid line, and folded in. dash line.
Figure 3 is a sectional view showing the bracket portion of the device.
Figure 4 is a sectional view showing a modification.
The structure forming the subject matter of this application preferably is made of metal throughout and includes a bracket 1 fashioned. from a single strip of material which is folded as shown at 2 to form a shank made up of an upper member 3 and a lower member 4, the lower member '4 having an arm 5 disposed at right angles to the members 3 and 4. the arm 5. terminating in a finger 6 disposed parallel to the members 3 and 4 and spaced vertically from the end 7 of the member 3, as Figure 3 will clearly show. By means of securing elements 8, the bracket is mounted on the undersurface of a running board 9, theparts 7, 5 and 6 being disposed close to the outer edge 19 of the running board.
The device includes a scraper 10, in the form of a strip of metal, the scraper being provided at one end with a tubular bearing 11 located between the finger 6 of the bracket member 4 and the end 7 of the bracket member 3. A pivot element 12 connects the parts 6 and 7 and passes through the bearing 11,
the-construction being such thatthe scraper 10 can be swung'horizontally. An extension piece. 14 is securedat 15 to the scraper 10 and serves as a reinforcement for the scraper. Oneend of the extension 14 projects beyond the bearing 11, and is off-set slightly, as shown at 16. At its free end, the scraper 10 has an upstanding stop 17 disposed at right angles to the scraper 10, the stop 17 being providedat its upper end with a horizontally pro ecting flange 18.
When the scraper is not in use, the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 1, and as shown in dash line in Figure 2. Under such circumstances, the scraper 10 is swung on the pivot element 12 until the scraper is about parallel with the outer edge 19 of the running board 9, the stop 17 engaging the outer edge19 of the running board, to limit the inward swinging movement of the scraper 10, and the flange 18 engaging'the upper surface of the running board, so that the scraper 10 will not be likely to be bent down accidentally out of the position shown in Figure 1.
I When it is desired to use the scraper 10, the scraper is swung outwardly into the solid line position of Figure 2, the scraper, then being held in the position approximately at right'angles to the outer edge 19 of the running board, because the off-set end 16 of the extension piece 14 engages the arm 5 of the bracket. Owing to the fact that the extension piece 14 is off-set as shown at 16, the
scraper 10 will be'disposed at right angles to the edge 19 of the running board 9, when the part 16 engages the arm 5, and it will not be necessary to notch or cut away the arm 5,'to let in the part 16, in order that the scraper 10'may be swung around at right angles to the edge 19 of the running board, as depicted in Figure 2.
In Figure 4, parts hereinbefore described have been designated b numerals previously used, with the su x a. In
this form, the extension piece 14 is formed integrally with the scraper 10 and is disposed at right angles'to the scraper. The
extension piece 14* engages the side of the V 6 arm 5, whereas the extension piece 14 enigages the edge of the arm 5.
What is claimed is 1 1. In a device of the class described, a bracket, means for securing the bracket to the running board of a'vehicle, a, scraper hingedly mounted on the bracket, the scraper being provided with an upstanding stop for engaging the edge of a running board, the stop having a transversely extended supporting flange adapted to overlap the upper surface of a running board.
2. In a device of the class described, at bracket comprising upper and lower members, the lower member having an arm (lisposed approximately at right angles to both members, the arm IBI'IIllIlIltlDg 111 a finger located near one end and parallel to the upper member, and e scraper mounted hingedly between said end of the upper member and the finger, the scraper being provided With an extension which engages the a mi to hold the scraper approximately in alinement with the bracket.
In testimony that I claim the fore oing as my own, I have hereto afiixe my signature.
MATTHEW M. LEWIS.
