This invention relates to velocipedes and the primary object is to provide a'novcl and improved form of velocipede, which .is pro .pelled by the operator, by a side-ways sway- ,5 in'g'movement of the body, or by alternately raising and lowering of the feet, and which is steered by thehands of the operator, who assumes a standing position on the vehicle when the same is in motion. Further and more specific objects will be disclosed in the course of the following 'specification,
reference being had. to the accompanying,
drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is aside elevation oft-he velocipede. Fig. 2 is atop oiyplan view of the device. Fig; 3 is a sectional detail viewon' the line 3'3 ,-in,Fig. a I
stantially as on the line in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of one ofthedriving wheels, a fractional portion bein broken away. 7 r
Fig. 6' 's an enlarged sectional detail elevation, transversely through one of the power wheels and a supporting bracket, the crank shaft being shown in full. I
Referring to the drawings more particularly. and by reference characters '7 desig-,
I nates an elongated base or platform, having a transverse slot 8-across itsmiddle portion. Depending from theplatform are three" (or more) brackets 9, 1O andflll, in which is journalled a transversely arranged shaft12 7 having opposed cranks 13. These cranks are 'res ectively connected, by, connecting rods 1 or links 14, to the oppositejendsof arocker beam 15, which is pivotally carried by a bracket16, so asto rock, in a transverse plane, in the slot 8. The beam 15 is pro= would otherwise be considerably weakened by reason of the-long slot' .8.
ratchet driven ground wheels 12*, as shown Fig.4 is a cross sectional elevation, sub-f vided with a pair of short standards 17 upon The ends of the shaftv 12 are provided with particularly in Figs. 3, 5 and 6. The con struction shown requires that the shaft'be providedwith a-"hub 19 having an integral ratchet pinion 20. The wheel, in the present 1nstance, 1s of the hollow fdisc type having spring held pawls 21 forengagement with the pinion. Thisjarrangement, permits the wheels to travel faster than the shaft. 12, when thedriver wishes to rest temporarily,
and also allows one wheel to travel faster than the other, as wheninaking a turn. The rear end of theplatform 7 is provided with a caster acting wheel 22, for trailing contact with the floor or sidewalk, and
the front'end ofthe platform is provided -with a.steering wheel" 23, which is steered by the operator whose hands engage the handles 2a of the column'25. Y
' It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the general design and structuraldetailsof the invention as herein shown, provided, however, thatsaid modifications come'withinthe spirit and scope of the appended claims. Having now therefore scribed my invention, what I'claim to be new and desire to protectby Letters Patent is: 1. A velocipede comprising a suitable platform having a steering wheel atits front end,and a caster wheel supporting the rear end, a pair 'of intermediate, laterally'ar-e ranged drive wheels, connected by a crank shaft. a foot operated beam, arranged to rock in a transverse vertical plane, and having connections with the cranks of the shaft for rotating the same. i
2. A velocip'ede comprising a suitable platform having a steering wheel at it's front end, and a caster wheel supporting the rear end, a pair of intermediate, laterally arranged drive'wheels, a beam mounted for rocking'movement in a plane transverse to i the velocipede, and having-connections with said drive wheels; for rotating thesame.
A velocipede comprising a suitable v V 80. 2 f y shown and de- I platforinhaving a steering wheel at its front s end, and caster wheel supporting the rear end, a pair of intermediate, laterallyan ranged drive wheels, a beam mounted for rocking movement in a plane transverse to the velocipede, and having connections with said drive wheelsfor rotating the same, and
foot supporting beam.
4. A velocipede comprising a suitable devices carried by said platform having a steeringwheel at its front end, and a easteriwheel supporting the rear end, a pair of intermediate, llaterally ar ranged drive Wheels, a beam mounted for rocking movement in re plane transverse to the velocipede, and having connections with said drive Wheels for rotating the same, said connections being so formed as to permit either drive wheel to rotate faster than 'the other.
5. A velocipede comprising a platform having a transversely arrangedslot therein. a manually operaliile beam liltably mounted iii-said slot, laterallyarrangeddiive wheels operatively connected withrthe beam, a caster wheelsupporting the rear end of the platform. and steering means at the front end of the platform.
,6. ,A' velocipede having asteering device at its forwardiendaml a caster Wheel supporting its rear end, a pair of laterally s need drive wheels supporting the sides of ,l e VBlOcipede, a rocker beam tiltablyniounted to the platform for oscillating movement a; a transverse plane, and fmjmanual :ma ,mpulation, and drive connections between said drive wheels andcbcam.
7- ,A velocipede comprising a platform ihaviug a transversely arranged s o therein, a ,manua'lly operable beam etiltalily mounted in sai $10 2, alterallywarm lged drive wheels supporting the platform and .aperatively connected with saidbeam, a bracket, serv- ,platform having a transverse slot therein, a a
crank shaft jonrna'led under the latiform and parallel Will] the slot, n ourna bearing for said shaft. consisting of arbracket which is secured to the platform at opposite sides of the slot so as to serve as a brace, Wheels carried by the ends of the shaft so Has to be driven thereby, a manually operated beam tiltalhly mounted in said slot, connecting rods between said beam and thecranks of the crank shaft, amlmeans for steering and holding .the platform in a horizontalposi- ,tion. a I
In testimony whereof I aflix lily-signature.
