IOY CRANE.
My invention relates to improvements in toy cranes. An object of my invention is to provide a novel and useful toy. Another object of my invention is to provide novel and useful mechanical movements and parts particularly adaptable for use in a toy of the character described.
An embodiment of the preferred form of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of my device assembled,
Figure 2 is a plan View of the same,
Figure 3 is a detail of the worm gear and adjacent parts,
Figure 4 is a section of the cab on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a front and sectional view of the clutch lever plate,
Figure 6 is a front and sectional view of the friction plate, and
Figure 7 is a front and sectional view of the worm gear.
Simliar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My improved toy includes a truck 1 having traction wheels 2, 2 upon the platform of which is mounted a rotatable cab 3 having a swivel base 4.
A boom 5 is mounted at its base on a shaft 7 seated in the sides of the cab 3 and carries a scoop bucket 8.
This bucket 8 is preferably formed of two counterpart sections 9 and 10 joined at their adjacent upper inner lips by pivots 11 and 12.
Arms 13 and 14 respectively project inwardly from the upper edges of the said bucket sections 9 and 10.
A chain or cable 15 passing over the sheave 16, adjacentthe end of the boom 5, connects the extremities of the arms 13 and 14, and is of such length that when the weight of the bucket 8 is supported by the cable 15 alone, the leverage of the arms 13 and 14 will hold the bucket 8 in its closed position.
The divided ends 17 and 18 respectively of a chain or cable 19 are secured to the out side upper edges of the bucket sections 9 and 10 whereby the bucket sections will be spread and the bucket opened when supported thereby.
The chain or cable 19 passes over a block 20 adjacent the outer end of the boom 5 and is connected adjacent the lower end of the boom 5 with an arm 21 of the lever disc 22 which is loosely carried on a rotatable shaft 23 mounted in the sides of the cab 3.
A disc 24 frictionally engaging the lever disc 22 is carried on the shaft 23 and is provided with an elongated cut out seat 25 for a key 26' carried by the plate or spiral worm gear 26.
On the underside of the plate 26 is provided a spiral lip 27 engaging the teeth 28. 28 preferably pressed out of the rocking plate 29 which swings on the shaft 7. V
A tension spring 30 is provided on the shaft 23 for the purpose of holding the said discs in frictional contact.
One end of the shaft 23 extends through the side of the cab 3.and is provided with a crank 31 and handle 32 by which it may be operated.
As the disc 24 is rigidly secured on the shaft 23, the turning of the crank 31 will cause the disc 24 to rotate and by means of the frictional contact the disc 22 will rotate with the disc 24.
lVhen the key 26 traveling in the slot 25 of the disc 24 reaches the end of the slot, the disc 26 will rotate with the disc 24 and the spiral lip 27 of the disc 26 will engage the teeth 28 of the rocking plate 29 which will thereby be caused to rock on the shaft 7. Stops 34 and 35 are provided at the ends of the path of the spiral lip 27.
The rocking plate 29 is provided with a lug 33 in which the boom 5 rests and as the plate 29 rocks the boom is thereby elevated or depressed. v
The bucket 8 is normally carried in its closed position by the cable 15 and the arms 13 and 14 whereby the two sections 9 and 10 of the bucket 8 are brought together and the boom 5 is raised and lowered by the rocking of the plate 29 by which it is supported. As the crank 31 is rotated the lug 26 of the disc 26 engaging the end of the seat 25, in the disc 24 fixed on the shaft 23 and the disc 26 is thereby caused to rotate. The spiral lip 27 of the disc 26 will engage successivcly the teeth 28 of the rocking plate 29 whereby the boom 5 carried thereby will be elevated or depressed.
When the lip 27 of the disc 26 reaches the end of its path and engages the stops 34 and 35, the boom 5 will come to a rest-- Lil Vhen the direction of rotation of the shaft 23 is reversed, the disc fixed on the shaft will rotate with the shaft and by means of the frictional engagement. with the disc 22 will thereby cause it to rotate and cause tension on the chain 19 which will thus open the bucket 8.
It will thus be seen that when the bucket 8 is raised and lowered by the boom 5 and supported by the cable carried thereby the bucket will be closed, but when the direction of the rotation of the shaft 23 is reversed a pull will be exerted on the chai 19 whereby the bucket 8 wil be opened.
In operation, therefore, the boom 5 carrying the bucket 8 is lowered by rotating the crank 31 by means of the handle 32, the bucket being; open. Reversing; the rotation of crank 31 wiil relieve the tension on the cable 19 and will elevate the boom 5 thereby causing the bucket 8 to be iifted by the cable 15 closing the bucket which will thereby scoop up sand or the like in its path and the bucket will be elevated in the closed position. The boom 5 may then be caused to swing over to the desired position by turning the cab 3 by which the boom carried. \Vhen it is desired to open the bucket and dump the contents the rotation of the crank 31. is reversed when tension will be again applied to the cable 19 and the bucket will be again opened as above described.
I prefer to construct my improved toy of sheet metal and stamp or bend out the several parts thereby providing an economical construction and permitting the device to be knocked down for shipment but as is obvious these parts may be constructed by any process as may be desired.
The frictional contact between the plates 22 and 24 is preferably provided by stamping out annular contacts 532 and 2% respectively but any other desired form of contact may be provided as desired.
The crank 33. i preferably stamped out f sheet metal as. shown in the drawings but any other form of crank may be substituted.
I prefer to construct the shaft 7 of heavy wire with a finger hold 7' at one end where by it; may be easily inserted and removed. I also provide Sl'lUlllCtQlS 7 T thereon to spread the ends of the boom 5 and to hold them in position.
Having thus describ d my invention what I claim is:
1. In a toy crane the combination of a cab, a broom having spaced end members. the cab and end mei'nbers having opening-s therein, a shaft inserted in said openings and havingshoulders thereon engaging said end members whereby the end members are held spaced apart.
2. In a toy crane the combination of a cab, a shaft in said cab having a movable rock ing plate thereon, a boon. fixed to said plate,
laterally projecting teeth on said plate, a disc journaled on said shaft adjacent said plate. and spiral means on said disc engagin; said teeth to move said boom.
3. In a to) crane the combination of a i. a boom and a hiicket having counterparts pivoted ten-ether. ltlt'itiit; supporting t bucket in fixed ieation to said boom, a ma'l't journalcd in said cab, a rotatable lever disc on said shaft, operative connecting means between the counterparts of said bucket and said disc, and crank means to rotate said disc to move the pivoted counterparts of said bucket.
4 In a toy crane the combination of a rocking plate having a slot. teeth on said plate adjacent said slot, a cab. a shaft mounted in said cab and passing thru said slot, a disc mounted on said shaft adjacent said pl'te and a spiral lip on said disc to engage sail teeth to move said plate.
5. In a toy crane the combination of a cab. a bucket having pivoted counterparts. a shaft mounted on said cab. a lever disc on said shaft. means connecting said disc and the counterparts of said bucket, a second shaft mounted in said cab, a boom support ing .-.aid bucket and journaled on said second shaft. a plate journaled on said second shaft and fixed to said boom, and a worm gear fixed on said first shaft engaging teeth on raid plate for operating the boom and means on said worm gear engaging said disc to more the counterparts of the bucket.

9. In a toy ((1118 the combination of a cab. a boom pivotally mounted in said cab. a plate iixed to said boom. said plate having a si'ot therein. a crank shaft journaled in said cab thru'said slot. teeth on said plate. a disc fixed to said shaft adjacent said plate, a spiral lip on said disc engagim said teeth whereby said boom may be moved.
9. In a toy crane the combination of a cab. a boom pivoted to said cab. a two-part bucket in fixed relation to said boom, the parts of said bucket being pivoted to each other, a shaft journaled in said cab, a lever disc journaled on said shaft, a second disc journaled on said shaft, means to hold said discs in frictional engagement, a plate fixed on said shaft, said second mentioned disc having a concentric slot therein, a key on said plate projecting into said slot, means connecting the parts of said bucket and said lever disc whereby operation of said shaft will operate said bucket.
10. In a device of the character described the combination of a shaft, bearing means for said shaft, a plate jonrnaled on said shaft, a second shaft, bearing means for said second shaft, a lever disc loosely journaled on said second shaft and means fixed to said second shaft in contact With said plate and said disc whereby movement of said second shaft will operate said plate and said disc.
11. In a device of the character described the combination of a cab, a shaft journaled in said cab, a plate mounted on said shaft, a r'eeond shaft journaled in said cab, a disc fixed it said second shaft, means on said disc engaging said plate whereby movement of said disc will move said plate, a lever disc ioosely journaled on said second shaft, a second means on said first mentioned disc to engage said lever disc whereby predetermined movement of said first mentioned disc will operate said lever disc.
