This invention relates to improvements in picker stick checks for looms.
An object of this invention is to provide a picker check which may be easily adgusted to the usual type of loom in such a manner as to materially relieve the strain on the lay portion of the loom and at thesame time provide a simple and efficient p1cker st1ck mechanism which may be readily ad usted to efiect the required retardation of the picker stick.
A further object ofthis inventon is to provide a loom check which will funct on to retard the movement of the picker n a loom in order that eXcessive shock to the loom may be eliminated as the pcker stick approaches each end of its stroke.
A further object of this inventonis to provide a loom check having a friction strap adapted to be slidably positoned between two elements of the loom thereby providing the principal retardation.
It has been the common practice to secure the necessary frictional retardation 'on the sliding element ordinarily adapted to be adjustably connected to the'loom lay.
Other objects of this inventon will appear from the following detaileddescripton of the device and as disclosed in the single sheet of drawings which is herewith made a part ot' this application.

In the common practiceof loom construc-` tion. a picker stick device is well known and it is usual to provide a picker stick check of various constructions. r i
This invention provides a picker check having an element 1, preferably made from a single piece of suitable material such as a cast-ing, and adapted to be adjustably arranged against the lay of the loom through the slottedopening 2 and the necessary cooperating elements. The element l is arranged to cooperate with the lay of the loom in such a manner that the right stroke of the picker stick will be permitted in order to obtain a correct checking. The element 1 is provided with a longitudinal slot 3 through which a check element 4, made from any suitable material, such as solid fiber, is adapted to slide with the stroke of the-picker stick. The slot 3 serves likewise for the additional purpose of holding' the check in operative relationship with the loom. The element I is, further-more,provided with suitable lug or shoulder portions 5 and 6 which are adapted to be fitted against the lay of the loom, thereby reducing the vibration of the picker check to a minimum.
The prime element in the loom check is the strap portion 4,-preferably made of solid fiber or other suitable material, which is adapted to slide through the slotted portion 3. A strap 7, forned of leather or other proper material, is detachably secured at each end to the strap 4 by means of suitable fastening elements such as bolts 8 and 9, which extend through the strap portions 4 and 7. Reinforcing elements, preferably of leathcr, as disclosed at 10 may be provided for the ends OI" the strap 7 in orderto receive the blow of the picker stick. The leather reinforcing element, such as 10, may be connected to the strap portion 4 and the strap 7 by means of the fastening bolt 8. Suitable Washers made of fiber or other material, such as 11 and 12, are provided, especially at the end receiving the hardest blcw of the check strap against element l fer th put pose of acting as snubbers orbumping means for the element 1 during the operation ot' the check on the loom. The strap 7 is adapted to receive its principal :trictional resistance retardation by passing between two element-s 13 and 14 adjustably connected in relationship to each other and suitably tastened to the loom.
It is to be understood that various types of casting elements may be used in this invention to cooperate with the lay of the loom in order that the stroke of the picker stick will be permitted to obtain a correct checking. One modification of the casting element is disclosed in operative relationship with the check element 4 in Figure 2. Other modifications of the casting element, through which the solid fiber checking element 4 may be adapted to slide, are disclosed in Figures 4, 5 and 6, in which the casting element 17 illustrates a casting adapted to cooperate with the lay of the loom on one hand, while casting 18 disclosed in Figure 5 is adapted to cooperate with the lay of the loom on the opposite hand. This preferred Construction of casting element for connecting with the lay of the loom and through which the checking element 4 is adapted to slide is made from a suitable material, such as cast iron, and formed into a unitary portion 18 having a laterally extending lug portion 22 through which suitable openings 20 and 21 are located for the purpose of properly cooperating with the lay of the loom. An auXiliary shoulder element 23 extends at right angles to the lug portion 22 of the casting, thereby functioning to provide a firm attaching means to the lay of the loom. An opening 19 is formed in the main portion of the casting 18 through which the checking element 4 is adapted to move with the stroke of the picker stick.
In operation, this invention provides a check for a loom in which the picker stick will function to first strike the curved portion 10 Contacting against the strap 7 on its swinging movement, thereby functioning to move the checkinwardly on the loom so as to cause the strap 7 to s ide under frictional resistance between the usual elements 13 and 14 in ordinary use on looms. The washers 11 and 12 will serve as substantial stops or butfers at a point where the check reachcs the limit of its movement inwardly on the loom after being so driven by the hardest blow of the picker stick against the leather reinforcing element 10. The Washer 11 is also thick enough to allow the regulation of the length of strap 7 by means of the slotted end 16 thereof and by the same projecting over and above the side ot' element 71, in the operation of the check on the loom. `he sliding arrangement above described tun-ctions to remove the greater part of the strain on the lay of the loom and consequently the life of the loom and all of its associated parts is correspondingly increased.
In this invention, the prime portion ot the frictional retardation is obtained through the passing of the strap 7 between the elements 13 and 14, thereby relieving much ot the strain on the lay ot the loom now ordinarily experienced. t course, there will' be some slight frictional resistance on the solid fiber strap composing the element to which the leathcr strap portion is attached, but the main frictional resistance is Secured as noted above.
It has been found, through experiment, that the use of the solid fiber strap is highly efficient and functions to give added life to the leather check strap portion.
It is understood that- ,the invention as above described is susceptible of many variations and adaptations within the scope of claims.
What I claim is:
1. A check for the pickerstick of a loom comprsing amember adjustably connected to the loom lay, an element slidably arranged in the member, a friction strap connected to the member forming a looped section, one portion of which is adapted to pass between suitably positioned friction elements, bumper portions positioned on the element for receiving the force of the blow of the member, also reinforcing elements arranged to cooperate with the friction strap.
2. A check for the picker stick of a loom comprisinga member adjustably connected to the loom lay, an element slidably arranged in the member, a friction strap connected to the member forming a looped section, one
portion of which is adapted to pass between bumper' suitably positioned friction elements, portions positioned on the element for receiving the force of the blow of the member, also reinforcing elements arranged to oooperate with the friction strap, means for sec uring the element, strap bumper and bufiers together consisting of fastening elements passing therethrough.
