Description

, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. OKEY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
LATE-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
l'o ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. OKEY, of the city of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Machine for Cutting Laths; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, through letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this speciiication, in which- Figure (l) represents a top view of my j machine, and Fig. (2) a transverse section through the center.
Hy invention relates more particularly to that class of machines in which the laths are severed from the blanks by a lateral or transverse cut crossing the grain of the wood; and it consists in arranging a series of cells, (for 'the reception and support of the blanks while being cut up into laths) and a series of gage stops to regulate their thickness, in arcs of concentric circles, upon the aXis of which is mounted, and vibrates the knife, or knives by which the lat-hs are cut from the blank.
My invention further consists in arranging and securing, upon a cutter head having a vibrating motion, a double or two edged knife, whereby laths may be cut, as well in its backward as in its forward stroke, thus economizing time and equalizing the labor of cutting.
To enable others to'make and use my invention, I will now proceed particularly to describe its construct-ion and operation.
The frame (A) of my machine `is constructed of iron or wood, t-he upper part being formed in the arc of a circle described from a journal (B) in the lower cross tie of the ends of the frame; extending from end to end, and connected with the upper ribs- (a) of the end frames, are a series of strips (C) which arereturned upward at each end, and form cells (D) `for the insertion of the blanks, between the sides of which they are supported as they are being cut up into laths, these cells are made of sufficient size to allow the blanks to pass through freely by their own weight, beneath, and at a suitable distance apart from. each cell, and at each end 16,493, dated January 27, 185'?.
thereof is placed a projection or gage stop (E) for the blanks to rest upon, which forms the gage for the thickness of the lath, these stops being arranged upon adjustable heads so that they may be raised or lowered, to increase or diminish the thickness of the laths as required.
On the rock shaft (B) which is supported in bearings at each end of the frame are mounted two bow, or stirrup levers (G) to the upper ends of which the knives (H) are attached. Motion is communicated to these by means of a belt, from steam engine or motive power, passing over the pulley (I,) which causes the shaft (J.) to rotate when the cams (K,) which are fast thereon rotate within the st-irrup (G), and cause them with the knives which are rigidly attached to their upper ends to oscillate upon the axis B, and thus cut the laths, from the underside of the blanks in the series of cells alternately by the backward and forward motion of the knives. The laths on being severed fall beneath asA the knife recedes from under the blanks, the latter dropping down upon the gage at the same time in readiness to be again cut upon the return of the knives. This arrangement might b-e slightly varied by having but one series of cells, arranged centrally over the rock shaft B, instead of on either side, and a two edged knife oscillating so as to cut from the saine blanks both in its backward and forward motion.
Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- JOSEPH B. OKEY.
