Description

Nov. 15, 1927. 1,649,350
W. P. JONES WIRE QLOTH STRETCHING MACHINE Filed April 22, 192.6
A W INVENTOR Patented Nov. 15, 1927.
UNITED STATES 1,649,350 PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM PETER JONES, or novna, NEW JERSEY.
WIRE-CLOTH-STRETCHING MACHINE.
Application filed April 22, 1926. Serial No. 103,997.
fabric wastage through tearing; second, to
reduce the shop space ordinarily required for Wire-cloth or fabric stretching andfastening operations; third, to provide facilities for stopping the wire-cloth or fabric stretching and fastening operations without necessitating a duplication of work already performed when resuming the task; and, fourth, to save time and labor by reducing the number of hands required to perform wire-cloth stretching or fastening operations.
One'form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the machine as it appears in actual operation when loaded with a roll of wire-cloth; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the machine from the side; and Fig. 3, a detailed, full-faced view of the machine from its front end.
The table or plate 1, represents the worktable or bench upon which the two adjustable, parallel basic uprights 2 2, are fastened, to any desired width, by means of angle brackets, 21 21, and lag screws.-
The two eccentric cams, 6 6 are fastened to the top of table 1 but beneath retainer 5 by means of rivets 7 7.
Between stationary retainer 5 and movable top clamp 3 is a thin opening both edges of which are faced with strips of metallic packing, wire clamping, 23 and 24, or other suitable material to prevent tearing of the wire-cloth or fabric 16 as it comes through said opening off the roll 12, which is horizontally supported by cylindrical roller 13 and clamps 14 14; attached to angle brackets 15 15 which, in turn, are fastened to the rear edges of basic uprights 2 2.
Movable top clamp 3, which is operated by the two eccentric cams 8 8 fastened in-- side the slot provided in the two basic uprights 2 2 by means of bolts 9 9, washers 1O 10 and nuts 11 11, is rendered adjustable by two spiral compression springs 20 20 inserted between the lower extremities ofinovable top clamp 3 and the upper extremities of stationary retainer5. Movable top clamp 3 is rendered proof against slipping or sliding sideways by the two dowels 19 19" inserted through top clamp 3 3 at right angles thereto and parallel with and resting against theface of the inside'of the basic uprights22.
Adjustable brace 4, fastened to the front edges of basic uprights 2 2, renders th framework Inoresecure.
' Brackets and bearings 26 26 attached to side of work table or bench '1 in conformity with width of adjustable, basic uprights 2 2,"
by means of parallel slots in work table, support roller-rod 27' beneath which wire-cloth or fabric 16 passes on its way to the further extremity of screen or other framework 17 the upper edge of which said framework is placed'snugly against the heads of eccentric cams 6 6 which, when operated by their handles, push screen or other framework 17 forward so that wire-cloth or fabric 16, tacked or otherwise fastened to lower end of framework 17 by tacks 25, is stretched and flattened to any desired degree between wirecloth or the fabric roll 12 and the lower end of the framework 17.
When the desired degree of tautness has been attained, the same may be maintained by operating the eccentric cams 8 and 8 which exert pressure upon the movable top clamp 3, thus securing the wire-cloth or other fabric between the stationary retainer 5 and the movable top clamp 3.
The work of completing the tacking, nailing, screwing, bolting, riveting, gluing or otherwise fastening of the wire-cloth or other fabric to the framework may then be immediately finished or it may be discontinued for the time being without the necessity of going over the stretching and fastening operations again, as would otherwise be the case.
In stretching and fastening wire-cloth or other fabric over certain frames where the weight of the frame would be insuflicient to permit of much stretching either because of the material of which made or because of the small size of the frame, it is advisable to fasten a protruding clamp 18 to the lower end of the framework 17 which said clamp 18 works in sliding, adjustable members or supports 22, 22, attached to the table or bench 1 whereb stability of the framework is ensured if: stretching and fastening purposes. i
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity,
L States Letters Patent is 1-. A stretching device for stretching material: across a frame. comprising" a base,
means= for-supporting the roll of material at one end of the base, a plurality of individual- Ly: operable ca-m members for moving the frame: to which the material is to be applied, guidesvon the base for said frame, and: a
clamp: between the frame and the rollv for securely holding the material to be stretched. 1 2: stretching, device for stretching mathe base for moving the frame to which the material is to be applied, guides on the base for said frame adapted to prevent the raising of one end of the frame from the base and a clamp between the frame and the material roll securely holding the material to be stretched.
3. A stretching device. for stretching material across aframe, comprising a base, means for supporting a roll ofmaterial at one end of the base, a plurality of members pivoted tothe base for moving the frame to which the material isto be applied on the base for said. lframe resiliently opposed clamping membersv disposed between the frame and the roll and. a plurality of cam members for operating said clamp members whereby the material to be stretched will? be securely held.
