CLOTHES DRIER.
Application filed i June 5,
This-invention relates to devices extendingou-twardly from a window or other opening in a building for supporting clotheszand other articles while being dried after washing. i
It is an object of the invention to provide in such a device a line-carrying frame that may be drawn inwardly ofa window or the like so that articles conveniently maybe placed upon and removed fromthe lines by a person inside thebuilding without reach ing out and incurring the danger of falling to the ground.
Another object of the invention is to provide a line-carrying frame that normally is wider than the ordinary width of windows in apartmenthouses and other dwellings, whereby greater capacity is afforded to the device, and that is capable of being narrowed at its inner end to permit it to be 'drawnthrough a windowor the like inside of a room.
Further, itis an object of the invention to provide a device for this purpose that may be mounted outside of a window or the'like Without alteration of the building, window frame or sash, and other parts.
When considered with the description herein, the characteristics of the invention are apparent from the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein an embodiment of the invention is disclosedin association with a window, for purposes of illustration. i
Although the disclosures exemplify what now is considered to be a preferable embodiment of theinvention, it is to be understood that it is not the intention to be limited necessarily thereto in interpretation of the claims, as .moditications and adaptations within the limits of the claims can be made -with'out departing from the nature of the invention.
Like reference-characters refer to corresponding parts in the views of the drawings, of which I Fig. 1 is a side elevation;
Fig. 2 is an outer end elevation;
Fig. 3 is an inner end elevation;
Fig. 4 is a plan view.
In the drawings, A designates frame members, B sash or other closure members of a window or other opening, and C a wall of a building.
The device is supported outside of such an opening by hooks 5 or other suitable attach-- 1926. j Serial Non-113,905.
ing means secured in any suitable and Outwardly-projecting arms 9 are connected to the brackets by having. the upstanding pins of the latterproject therethrough, and they are held thereon the cott'er pins. The outer end of each arm is in the form of a sleeve 10 having set-screws 11. A crossbar 12, which is a part of the stationary frame of the device, extends through the sleeves and held associated therewith by the. set-screws. Theic-ross-bar is of any convenient length, so that the brackets may be 7 fixed to the. wall of a building beyond the frame fmembe-rs of. the opening, if desired. Other parts of the stationary frame ,are hangerslS, depend ng from the cross-bar,
having lower terminal portions ltprojecting toward each other, outwardly-extending l substantially parallel rails lo-s'ecured totlie hangers above the lower terminal portions thereof, brace-rods 16 secured to" the crossbar andto the-rails, and an outer spacing member 17 having downwardly-depending legs 18 secured to the sides of the rails. The outer portion of the stationary frame is supported by chains or ropes19 secured to the member 17 and engageable with the hooks 5.
The stationary frame is for the purpose of "rea ms tivjely high position as in the upper transaffording a reliable support outside of a building for a movable line-carrying frame;
The latter frame includes substantially parallel longitudinal members 20 slidablefbetween thestationary rails 15 on the terminal portions let of the hangers 13 and on rollers 21 arranged to traverse those rails.
,ner cross-bar carries rearwardly-extending lu s 26 in which transverse membersQ? are b slldable. Each of the members 27 carries a linenude at 1ts outer end and has also a depending pin or handle 28 adapted to be grasped by the hand for the purpose of imparting sliding movement thereto. The pins or handles 28so are positioned that tlieycontactwiththe end lugs 26 and stop spreading movement of the members 27 when the line- Sit guides thereon are substantially alined with those on the ends of the outer crossbar 22.
l Vhen'the device is associated with a W111- dow having a vertically-movable sash, it so ispositioned that the movable frame may be drawn inwardly under the lower 'sash' when the latter is raised. Before drawing in that frame, the members 27Qare contracted, in order that they may clear the sides of the opening. WVhile in its inward position, clothes and other articles may be placed on or removed from the endless lines without the necessity of the operator reaching out of the opening. After the lines have been loaded orunloaded, the frame maybe pushed outwardly ofthe opening, the members 27 spread; and the opening closed. Outward movement of the frame is stopped at the depending legs of the" spacing member 18.
