JOHN n. HILL, or HOUSTON, TEXAS.
PUMP.
Application filed January 29, 1927. Serial No. 164,449.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a pump.
One object of the invention is to prov de a pump of the character described having a novel type of standing valve structure which may be readily connected to the traveling valve and detached from the standing valve nipple and withdrawn so as to permit. the fluid in the pump tubing to drain out into the well when the tubing is withdrawn.
Pumps of the character now commonly used for pumping oil from oil wells are attached to the lower end of the well tub ng and it is necessary to withdraw said tubing from the well and break the same up into joints in order to pull the pump from the well. During this operation the standing valve, at the lower end of the pump barrel, is closed and the tubing is filled with oil which spills out from the tubing, as the same is broken up, onto the derrick floor and is wasted and interferes with the workmen on the derrick floor. It is the object of this invention to provide a pump having a standing valve that may be readily connected to the sucker rod and detached from the standing valve nipple and withdrawn so that the oil in the tubing may be drained out into the well as the tubing is withdrawn, in pulling the pump from the well.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which'is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein I I v Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the lower end of the working barrel showing the valves therein.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical sec tional view of the upper end of said barrel Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 designates the working barrel of the pump whose upper end is connected to the lower end of the pumptub ing 2 by means of the coupling 3. Threaded 7 into the lower end of the barrel 1, by right hand threads 4, there is a tubular swedged nipple 5 whose lower end is blank and ex tends downwardly beneath the'barrel to receive the wrench for screwing the same into,
or out of said barrel. The upper end of the.
nipple 5 is reduced forming the neck 6 which is provided with-external left hand threads and there is atubular bushing? whose lower end has internal left hand threads which are threaded on to the neck 6. The upper endof the bushing 7 is reduced forming the neck 8 which has the external right hand threads 9 and mounted on this neck 8 there is an annular valve seat lOwhich is controlled by the upwardly opening valve 11 confined bythe conventional valve cage 12 whose lower end is threaded on to the neck 8 and clamps the seat 10' between it and said neck 8.
In the working barrel there is a .conventional traveling valve structure 13, which is controlled by the upwardly opening valve 14 and which maybe reciprocated in the pump by means of the suckerv rod 15 to the lower end of which said traveling valve is attached. The sect-ions of the sucker rod 15 are connected by right hand threads and the sucker rod is connected to the traveling valve by right hand threads. The cage 12 has an upstanding connection 16 having the external right hand threads and the lower end of the traveling valve 13. has the socket 17 provided with internalright hand threads. l/Vhen it is attempted to pull the pump from the bore the traveling valve 13 is lowered and turned to the right so as to screw the connection 16 into the socket 17. The sucker rod is then turned further toward the right thus unscrewing'the bushing 7 from the neck 6 of anchor or nipple 5' and tightening the.
threadsconnecting the other parts of the pump and when said bushing 7 is unscrewed from the neck 6 the traveling valve 13 and also all of the standing valve structure eX- cepting the nipple 5 may be pulled up through the tubing. As the tubing is now pulled. and broken up the oil in it will drain back into the well.
What I claim is 1. A standing,valvemechanism including a tubular nipple, a tubular bushing attached to the upper end thereof, by left hand threads, an annular valve seat carried by said bushing, an upwardly opening valve controlling said seat,a cage to confine said valve and attached to said bushing by right opening valve above said nipple, a cage,
' valve, the threads connecting said bushing;
threaded to said bushing and confining said and nipple being pitched a direction the opposite of the pitch of the threads connecting the cage to saidbushing.
3. A standing valve structure for pumps including a nipple, a bushing threaded t0 the nipple by means ofleft hand threads, said nipple and bushing having a fluid pase sagevvay thereth-rough, a valve above the bushlng-controlling said passageway, a valve 7 cage attached to said bushing and confining Said valve. v
4. The combination with a pump Working barrel, of'a tubular. anchor carried by the lower end thereof, a tubular bushing connected to said anchor, an upwardly opening valve above said bushing and controlling the pas sageway therethrough, a cage connected to the upper end of said bushingand confining said valve, one of said-connections being accomplished by left hand-threads 5. The combination WiflTa pump Working barrel, of a tubular anchor carried by the lower end thereof, a tubular bushing connerted to the upper end of said anchor by left hand threads, an upwardly opening valve above said bushing and controlling the passageway therethrough, a cage connected, :by right hand threads to the upper end of said bushing, and confining said valve and an upstanding neck, having right hand threads, carried by the upper end of said ca e.
ll. The combination With a pump Working barrel, of'an anchor at the lower end thereof, a valve mechanism including a valve cage, a valve confined by said cage, a tubular connecting member having a fluid passageway therethrough controlled by said valve, said tubular connecting 'member being connected to said cage and anchor, one of such connections being effected by left hand threads.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this'spe'cification.
