GIPP IM. BREWER, F SYLVIA, KANSAS.
CLAMPING GEAR PLLER.
Application led February 2a, 1927.
The present invention has reference to gear or wheel pullers and aims to provide means whereby the jaws and arms of the device will have a'clamping action as well as a pulling action when the actuating boltI is operated in the removal of a gear or wheel.
Another' important object ofthe invention is to provide a head having a square opening to receive a nut through which the actuating bolt moves in operating the device, the nut being removably supported so that when the threads of the nut become worn, the nut may be readily replaced, eliminating the necessity of retreading the head or replacing the head.
l/Vith the foregoing and otherobjects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claim-ed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a gear or wheel puller constructed in accordance with the invention, the head thereof heilig shown in section. v
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device, the actuating bolt being .shown in section.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a modied form of head, the threaded actuating bolt being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the head of the puller, which is formed with a square opening the walls thereof being tapered as at 6, to accommodate the tapered surfaces of the nut 7 which is positioned therein.
Lateral spaced ears 10 extend from the body portion, the ears being formed. with openings to receive the pins 11 that pivot ally connect the substantially triangular plates 12 thereto. These plates 12 have Serial No. 170,657.
openings at their upper ends to accommodate the pins 13 to which the links 14: are connected. i
At the opposite ends of the links 14 are pins 15 that pass through openings formed at the upper ends of the arms 16, pivotally connecting the arms 16 to the links 14 in such a way that movement of the plates 12 will operate to move the arms 16.
Links 1'? are pivot-ally connected to the lower corners of the plates 12 by means of pins 18, the `links 17 contacting with oppo site sides of the arms 16 and pivotally connected thereto by means 0f pins'19. Formed at the free ends of the arms 16 are jaws 20 adapted to be positioned over the gear to be pulled. 1t will beV understood that when it will be desired to pull wheels with the de. i
vice, the arms 16 may be removed and replaced with other arms, wherein the jaws extend at right angles to the jaws as shown in the drawing, so that the jaws may t between spokes of a wheel.
In the use of the device, as a gear puller, the jaws Q() are positioned over a gear, and the threaded bolt 8 moved to engage the shaft on which the gear is position-ed.v Pressure is nowv exerted on the bolt 8 resulting in the body portion 5 being moved upwardly, rocking the plates 12 and causing the jaws 20, or free ends of the arms 16 to be moved towards each other to clamp the gear.
As the gear is being clamped, it is obvious that the plates moving upwardly, move the arms to draw the gear from the shaft.
I claim:
A gea-r puller including a body portion, substantially triangular plates pivotally supported on the body portion, arms having jaws formed at their free ends, links connecting the plates and upper ends of the arms, links connecting the plates and arms, the last mentioned links having connection with the arms at points substantially intermediate the .ends of the arms, a bolt operating through the body portion to move the body portion longitudinally of the bolt, toA move the free ends of the jaws towards each other to grip a gear being pulled. l
In testimonythat l claim the foregoing as my own, l have hereto affixed my signature.
GIP? M. BREWER.
