Another' object of the invention resides in providing a guard and holding plate for a .substantially square blade in which the holding plate is secured to the guard at two spaced points for exerting a clamping action on the blade adjacent opposite end portions, one of which lies between the two points at which the holding plate is clamped to the guard, so that the blade may be properly flexed to give lrigidity along one edge portion projected .for use and to prevent relative movement of the blade to the guard in clamped position.
A. still further object of the invention resides in providing a razor structure in which the handle is detachable from the blade holding elements and in which one of the elements is provided with means for cooperating with the handle in a predetermined manner to prevent detachment of the handle from said element after release of the other element secured thereto.
The invention comprehends numerous objects residing in the construction and association of the several parts which are more I particularly pointed out in the following detailed description and in the claims directed to a preferred form of the invention, it being understood however 'that various changes may be made in the size, shape and relation of these arts, without departing from the spirit an scope of the invention as herein set forth. l p

l indicates a guard member which is substantially square in plan view as shown in Fig. 4, and has one curved end indicated at 2 which curves throughoutsubstantially the entire portion at one end of the median transverse plane thereof. The edge portion of this curved end 2v is partially rolled as indicated at 3 in order to provide a smooth surface adapted to guard the free edge of the blade in use and have bearing contact with the surface being shaved. The free,
edges of this guard member l 'are provided with laterally extending flanges 4 to provide an enclosure for the edges of the blades which are not in use and contact therewith.

The blade 14 is provided witha substann tially square opening 15 the central portion of which is adapted to't over the substantially square raised portion 11 on the guard member to accurately position the blade' rela.-` tive to said guard member. f

This razor employs a blade having four sharpened ed es as shown in Fig..6 with the o enmg 15 ocated at substantiall equidistant points from each edge in or er that in the use of theblade, thevprojection 11 of the guard will position the blade with any desired edge projecting along the rolled end 3 so that the retaining member may be" moved into engagement with the blade and the handle 12 threadedv onto the stud 9 for drawing the retaining member toward the ard member to the position shown in Fig. 2 for lockin the blade preparatory to using the razor. n this operation the retaining member through the fulcrum connection at 6 and the connection with the handle through the stud 9 provides a two-pointattachment of the retaining member to the ard meinber with the transverse rib 13 'sposed between these points and exerting a substantial pressure on one edge of the blade for retaining it in firm contact with the guard. The connection of the handle causes the free end of this retaining member to engage the op osite edge portion of the blade immediate y adjacent the cutting edge and` throughout the length of said. cutting edge operation with the rolled .portion of the guard at its juncture with the-end of the' curved portion 2. This will ilex the blade along a predetermined arc at one side ofthe median transverse dimension of the blade so that the edge portion presented for use will be maintained in a substantially rigid relation. This permits ,the use of a blade which is .normally and of itself not sufficient to withstand the pressures applied thereto durin use.

The handle construction as above described, provides for the retainin of the handle in assembled relation with t e guard member when the retaining member is in open position except when the cut away portion 21 is alined with one side of the slot 19 which will permit the detachment of the handle from the guard member. As' it is frequently undesirable to disassemble the handle from the guard it will be seen that this construction provides this advantageous feature and that at the same time Ipermits the ready and com lete detachment of the handle when desire Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A safety razor comprising a guard member having vone end curved airone side of its median line, and the rtion at the opposite side of said median e being substantially flat, a retainin member, and means for attaching the retainin member to the guard member at a pair o spaced intervals for securin a iexible blade therebetween, said retaining member clamping theblade oii the guard member at a pair of spaced intervals at opposite sides of one of the points at which the retaining member is secured to the guard member, said retaining member flexing said blade at one side of a median transverse line in a predetermined manner.
2. Asafety razor,
comprising a guard meinvber having one curved end, and the other end substantially fiat, a retaining member fulcrumed at one end to the last named end of said guard member, means engaging the retaining member and the guard member intermediate the ends for clampin said retaining member to said guar member adapted to mount a blade therebetween, said retaining member being formed for engagement with the blade along its free end, and a point intermediate said free end. and said fulcrum and adapted to flex said blade at one side of its median transverse dimension on an are -greater than the flexin of the blade at the opposite side of the me ian line to rovide maximum rigidity'in secured osition, in contact with said guard mem r to present a cutting edge projecting between. the free ends of the retaining and guard members.

A handle construction for safety razors, comprising a ard member having a profrom one side thereof terminatng in a laterally extending foot, said m neeaoee formed with an opening` and a slot provding communication with said opening, a. retainin member ,adapted for cooperation with te guard member for clamping a blade therebetween, said retaining member having a threaded projection extending through an opening in said guard in substantial alinement withhe opening in said foot, and a handle having a bearing Harige on one end and an adjacent cut away portion adapted for intertting engageysald stud for locking the retaining o of registry. 20
