My invention relates` to collating mechanism tor ty pewriting machines and its chief objectis to provide improved means for collating or assembling work sheets in desired relationship preparatory to writing entriesV in duplicate at varying predetermined positions on the diilerent sheets. Another objcct oit my invention is to provide new and improved paper clamping devices; and still another object is to provide new and im proved paper guiding devices.
To the above and other ends which will `hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features ot construction, combinations otl devices and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention in the present instance, I provide a bail comprising a cross bar and which is hung or suspended from the platen carriage of the machine, the side arms of the bail being pivoted on the trame of tally` roll mechanism which is mounted on the carriage. The cross bar of the bail is disposed above the platen at its 'front side and provides a support for a pair ot paper controlling or clamping contrivances which are individually settable at diflie/rent' points along the cross bar and lengthwise oi the platen so as to take care of work sheets of dili'erent widths. The paper clamping contrivances comprise each a plate-like kportion on which is pivoted a clamping aw, the clamping jaw carrying an inner side edge guide for a narrow work sheet or bill and the plate-like portion having on it an outer side edge guide for a wider record or ledger sheet. The clamping contrivances are adapted to be opened and closed in concert or simultaneously in all of their adjusted relationships by means comprising a rock shaft supported by the bail and provided with a linger piece, eachcontrivance having` an individual train of connections with the rock shaft, these trains being automatically adjustable along with the contrivances. The construction is such that the linger piecetor controlling the clamps oc cupies a constant or single normal position on its mounting,'while` the clamps may occupy a variety of set positions lengthwise of the platen. The entire mechanism may be 'thrown back vout of the way ore-and-aft of the machine by-turning the bail on its pivots, v
thus ail'ording access to the underlying tally roll mechanism, with which my present in vention is usually associated,as well as affording a ready means of dispensing with the mechanism when it is not to be used.
The present form of the invention may be advantageously employed in connection with two work sheets such as a ledger or record sheet and a statement or bill, which may bey used with' the tally sheet, the three sheets all heilig written on simultaneously by means of transfer sheets or carbons after the statement and ledger sheets have been collated or assembled in desired relationship.
In thus usingv the invention, the clamps are lirst opened together and the 'feed rollers that co-operate with the platen are thrown oil' by the usual release or in some cases 'automatically. The ledger and statement sheets with an interleaved carbon are .inserted together from the yback and moved around under the platen and up at the iront past the printing line and over the cross bar of the bail and the plate-like parts ot the clamps. The clamps having been properly set or spaced apart for the record sheet,the latter will be guided between the liXed side guides on said clamps and in closeproximity thereto, either or both of the guides serving as a side edge gage or gages. The` usual line finder of the machine is employed to gage thefrecord sheet vertically. The record sheet having thus been properly positioned, the clamps are simultaneously thrown on to clamp its side edges above the printingline, thus leaving both hands otl the operator free properly to adjust the bill sheet which may be in the present case aligned lengthwise of the platen against the left-hand side edge guide carrie-d by the clamping jaw', the bill sheet being so narrow as to pass inside the clamping jaws. The vertical alignment of the bill sheet is effected by the regular line nder. The invention will be describedy in detail and explained more at length in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the preferred form of my-invention.
