IMPROVEMENT IN SHEET=METAL Hines s.
Specification forming part'of Letters Patent No. 164,774, dated June 22, 1875; application filed June 29, 1874. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Soo'r'r, of Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Sheet-Metal Hinge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a sheetmetal hinge, with a wing or wings bent out from the body of one or both thereto, all as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figurel is a plan view of ablank from which one of the leaves of my hinge is made, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the back side of a hinge which is constructed in accordance with my invention.
In order to construct my sheet-metal hinge the iron is first blanked out in any pleasing design. The portion of the blank which is to form the coil to receive the pin is separated from the rest by slits a a. (See Fig. 1.) In
this leaf the portions 11 b are to be formed into the usual coil, and the portion 0 is to be bent outward to form the wingd. In Fig. 2 the leaf A is the one formed from the blank, Fig. 1. The leafB is formed in like manner, and from a similar blank, except the central portion of the slitted end is formed into a coil, and the other portions bent out to form wings d d, which wings stand at near right angles to the leaves. The two leaves, when formed, are put together and secured by a pin inserted within the coils, as in the ordinary hinge.
In use the leaves A B are secured to the front of the door and its support, and the wings d are secured to the edges or sides thereof, whereby the hinges are secured with much more than ordinary strength, and the cost of producing this hinge is but very little greater than that of producing the ordinary sheetanetal hinge.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, the sheet; metal hinge composed of the leaves A B, and provided with one or more wings, (I, bent out from the leaf or leaves, and standing at near right angles thereto, all sqibstantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 22d day of June, 1874.
