LADDER AND PLATFORM SUPPORT.
Application fled Kay 14; 1921. Serial'No. 191,491.
The pres'ent invention relates to a ladder 'andplatform support and an object of the invention is to provide a novel construction which may be attachedto an ordinary ladder to support the latter out of contact with the wall while at the same time providing a support for a platform. Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of the class described which will have three.
means for'engaging three distinct rungs of aladd-eiy'one' of said -means acting to sustain the outer endof the supportand the other two means acting to sustain the inner endof the support so that the strain imposedat the inner end willbe distributed upon two rungs.
T0 theseand other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described; the novel features being pointed v out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a ladder and platform support constructed in accordance with this invention and shown attached to a fragment of the ladder;
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the embodiment shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan-view of the support with part of the hanger for the outer end broken away, and the movable hanger at the lnner end thrown forward upon the support; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section of one arm of the movable hanger at the inner end of the support.
Referring more particularly to the llustrated embodiment of the invention 1 indicates the uprights of a ladder having rungs 2 connecting the same. i
The combined ladder and platform sup-" port as illustrated embodies a frame having two side pieces 3 arranged in diverging relation, and connected by cross pieces 4 which are of less thickness than the side pieces 3 and lie below the upper surfaces of the side pieces. At the inner ends of these side pieces, or those which are nearer together, there are provided two straps 5 bolted at 6 to the upper faces of the side pieces 3, projected beyond the ends 7 and turned downwardly at 8 in spaced relation to the ends to provide downwardly opening recesses in which one of the rungs 2 of a ladder is adapted to be received so as to hold the forward end of the support to the ladder. It has been found that the imposing of the entire weight of the inner end of the support upon one rung of the ladder especially after such rung becomes worn is dangerous, andtherefore an additional sustaining means for the inner ends of the frame of the support is provided. This additional sustaining means, in thisinstance, is in the form of a hanger, pivoted at 9 to the inner fac'es of the sidepieces 3 in spaced relation to-the ends 7 and having two arms 10 which are connected by a hook 11,.said hook facing, when in an elevated position toward the outer end of thesupport and adapted to'be engaged over a mug 2 immediately above the rung engaged by the straps 5. swing inwardly in order to be received between the side pieces 3 so as to not interfere with the side pieces acting as a support for platform boards. It is also preferred to make the hook portion 11 of the hanger adjustable with relation to its pivots 9 and to this end the arms 10 of the hanger are divided into two sections each, the two sections being provided with right and left hand threads for engagement by a turn buckle 12. This'adjustment not only accommodates the' hanger to ladders having differentdistances between their rungs but it also takes up for wear on the rungs. The outer end of the support is sustaine by a hanger comprising preferably two arms '13 pivotally connected to eye bolts 14 secured to the sidepieces 3 near the outer ends;' of the latter, said arms being connected by a hook 15 at their outer ends. adapted to engage the rung 2 above the rung engaged by the hook 11. The arms 13 lie in spaced relation to the side pieces 3 so that the upper faces of the side pieces may be used to sustain boards making up a plat- The hook is- This. hanger is adapted to form and also resting upon a like support This support will building while a rung of the ladder engages.
the ends 7 of the side pieces. The, hanger for the outer end of the support sustains said supportin operative connection with the ladder. A novel means is provided for holding the ends of'the side pieces in abut-' ment'with the rung of a ladder and an additional sustaining means for the inner end of the support cooperates with a rung above that engaged by the ends of the side pieces.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
1. A ladder and platform support comprising two side pieces connected in diverging relation, straps fastened to the upper faces of the side pieces adjacent the ends that are nearer together, said straps having of a ladder above the rung engaged by the straps. .e
2. Aladder and platform support comprising two side pieces connected together,
means at the inner ends of said side pieces for supporting said side pieces from a ladder rung, a hanger for engagement with a rung "above that engaged by the first named means,
eye bolts to which said hanger is pivotally connected, and cushions held on the outer ends of the side pieces by said eye bolts I 3. A ladder1 and platform support cornprising a frame, rung engaging means at the inner end of the frame for, cooperating with a rung of a ladder, a hanger pivotally connected to the outer end of the frame and having a hook portion adapted to engage a rung of: a ladder above the rungengaged by the first mentioned rung engaging means,. and a second hanger pivotally connected to the frame adjacent the inner end of thellatter and having a hookportion for engagement of afrung between the run engaged by'the rung engaging means an mentioned hanger.
