Ely improvedguide or gauge member comprises a standard or vertically extending member having a bracket. member at the hottom thereof that is. adapted to be engaged with the wall. at a corner and which has a bracket member having means thereon adapted to be engaged with the wall at a point spaced from the bottom of said standard and 5 which is movable along the standard to any desired position, the last mentioned member being provided with means for adjusting the distance between the standard-engaging portion thereof and thewall engag ing portion thereof to plumb the standard. Said standard is further preferably provided. with a gauge member or guiding member that is movable along said standard and base memberengages.
It is furthermore a purpose of the invention to provide the base 'member With a .thinned lip that is adapted to be engaged with the'under surface of the brick. that the guiding portion ot'said base. member engages.
. Gne of the important advantages of my invention is that with the improved gauge or guiding means anyibrick layer who can lay brick by line can build corners. Ordinarilyonly highly skilledbrick layers are able to lay the corners which have to belald prior to the layin'g'of the intermediate wall portion which is filled in by the brick layers having less skill.
Another advantage of the invention is that much time is saved in wall construction because it isnot necessary to wait for the laying up of the cornersto fill in the inter:

This is determined by means of the scales 59, the number of courses of bricks to be provided within a certain height being first calculated, whereby the number of courses to the foot is determined, making it possible to align the edges 63 with the proper markings on the scales 59 to absolutely, accurately position the lines .64 securedto the cleats 56 and extending through the slots 58 in a horizontal direction and with the next lower course already laid,-the last laid course.

After the course of bricks determined in this manner has been laid, the members 40 are moved up the proper distance on each of the standards 15 to place the lines 64 in proper position for the next course.
This is continued until the upper ends of the members 15' are reached when the members 15' are released from the wall and the li-"ps 20 are inserted at a proper distance from the top of the wall underneath a brick corresponding to the brick 61, so that the anchoring member 31 on the turn'buc-kles can also besecured in the wall near the top thereof. The operation is then repeated of plumbing the members 15 and placing the lines 64in the proper position; I
It is sometimes diflicult to get the flanges 19 into exact engagement with the corner' bricks 61 and in order that the flanges 55 will be aligned therewith so as to align 'the' bricks being laid'at the top-of the wall with the-bricks 61-, the jaw portion 51 can be "adjusted relative to the-portion 41 by means of the slot 52 in a well known manner.
