APPARATUSYFOR CLEANIN THE BowLsor c'nn'rmruean sErARaTons;
pplication filed May 24, 1922, Serial No. 563,408. and. iirGermany June 17', I921.
If a liquid containing solid particles of. higher specific weight than that of the surrounding liquid be fed through the bowl of a centrifugal separator, a greater or smaller quantity of such particles is. separated and will adhere to'theinnerdvall of thebowl. ShouldsO large a quantity be separatedrthat the annular space between the outer 'periphery'of the liner and the inner Wall of the bowl be filled theiseparat ing operation is to be interrupted for removal of'the slime; For-the same reason also bowls of centrifugal se arators having no liner have to be set out o operationfrom time to time.
The method commonly used at present consists in that the bowl, if necessary, is
taken to pieces and the main part of the slime removed by means of a scraper, whereupon the remainder thereof is removed by the aid of a brush or water, said operation being a time wasting and unpleasant task. Moreover the durability or the'bowl is con- I siderably reduced, since the protecting tin coating as well as the soldered parts adapted to maintain the equilibrium are worn away. A This invention relates to an apparatus by means of which the said inconveniencesare considerably reduced by the slime being re moved by washing. I The apparatus consists of a receptacle provided with one or more outlet openin s for-liquid or steam so ar ranged that the discharge takes place within the hollow space of the bowl.
According to the, nature of the layer of slime different methods may be used. If
' the quantity of slime is less compressed, it
will be suflici'ent to use water alone or, if necessary, a steam jet. If on the contrary the slime is compressed so as to form a hard mass, it will be necessaryfirst to fill partly with water the receptacle surrounding the slime and then by means of steam or air to set the water into a strong whirling movement so as to loosen and remove the slime.
In order that the same apparatus can be used for all these methods the supply conduit is provided with a controlling device by means of which the supply of water and steam can be controlled, as desired, in various proportions.
In the accompanying drawing three embodiments of the apparatus are illustrated.
vention in'longitudinal section.
Fig.-.1 shows one embodiment ofthe in Fig. 3 isa sectional; view of further,
[placed cleaned and the outer wall of which is provided with outlet openings; In Fig. .3 the liquid discharges through a pipe B parallel with the axis of the bowlfi strengthen the washing effect "of the jets the support can be so shapedthat the bowl is able to be easily set into rotation, as for instance indicated by Kin Fig. 8. In all the embodiments it is of advantage that'the discharge takes place as near to the layer of slime as possible. To realize the above method of washing away the layer of slime by means of forcibly moving water a receptacle D, D or D surrounding the mom i her of the centrifugal apparatus is necessary, said receptacle being provided with a drain cock E, E or E a device F, F or F 0011- I trolling the position of the water level and a pipe G, G or G conducting awayf air andv uncondensed steam. A member H, H or H is provided for controlling the quan- .tity of the washing means, said member consisting for instance of two ormore valves ndependent of one another. I
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure 1. In an apparatus for washing the bowls of centrifugal machines, a receptacle for the bowl, an annular .bowl support extending up within the receptacle and means associated therewith to forcibly dischar e washing fluid toward the wall of the receptacle, thebowl being adapted to be supported in inverted position within the receptacle with itscircular body portion surrounding and spaced from the water-discharging means.
In order to respectively for the-bowl to -be cleanedand a space of said part 'ofthe I by Letters Patent of the United States is 55 Fig '2 rep-resentsa modifiedform thereof,- likewise in longitudinal section, and

bowl being adapted to be supported in inverted position within the receptacle with its circular body portion surrounding and spaced from the water-discharging means, and a gas discharge pipe provided with an inlet at its upper end portion and extending down within the receptacle and so positioned as to extend within the bowl and relatively, close to its inner vwall when the bowl is supported with the receptacle as specified.
