GOVERNOR FOR GAS ENGINES;
Application filed November 22, 1926. Serial No. 150,015.
The object of my invention is to provide a governor for gas engines of simple, durable ind inexpensive construction, which may be easily and quickly attached to that type of a gas engines which is used to propel motor vehicles, and preferably of that type employing a circulating water pump.
More specifically it is the object of my in vention to provide a speed governor for gas in engines having a water circulating pump driven by means of a flexible member such as a belt or chain and to provide in connection with said driving means a governor for automatically controlling the throttlevalve i 'of th'e gas engine. t
A further object is to providea belt wheel which may be easily and quickly applied to the pump shaft of a gas engine, said belt wheel being provided with a governor doso vice for controlling the throttle valve of the carburetor so that a single belt wheel need be used for driving the governor and said water pump, and to provide in connection therewith means for adjusting the governor so the engine maybe run at any predetermined speed.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objectsconteinplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 3 is an enlarged, detail, sectional view of the pump housing and my improved so governor device.
The numeral indicates the automobile frame on which is supported a gas engine 11 having the usual radiator 12 and a water circulating pipe 13 which makes connection 45 with the top portion of the radiator, the lower end of the radiator being provided with a water circulating pipe 14: which is in communication with the pump casing 15 provided with an outlet pipe 16 communi- 50 cating with the lower end of the water Jacket of the cylinder block of the engine 11.
The casing 15 is provided with a pump shaft 17, one end of which has a propeller blade 18 for circulating the water from the 55 pipe 14 through an opening 19 in the cas ing and outwardly through the openings 20 into the pipe 16. The outer end of the shaft 17 extends forwardly and is provided with a pulley wheel 21 for receiving a fan belt 22. The inner end of the hub of the belt wheel 21 is provided with recesses 23 and outwardly projecting 1ugs24, said lugs being arranged in pairs and each pair having a governor arm 25 pivotally mounted thereon. The inner ends of said arms extend into the recesses 23, while the outer ends are provided with balls 26.
Slidably mounted on the shaft 17 adjacent to the'hub of the pulley 21 is a collar 27 having an annular groove 28 for receiving the prongs of a yoke 29 secured to the outer end of a shaft 30 slidably mounted in a lug 31 extending from the upper side of thecasfng 15. The shaft 30 is provided with a spring 32, one end of which is designcd'to rest against acollar 33 secured to the said shaft. The otherend of the spring is designed to rest against a tension front and back cylinder blocks and makes connection with the carburetor arm 40 of a carburetor 41, in the manner clearly shown in Figure 2.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a governor attachment having a belt wheel which may be placed on the outer end of the shaft 18, and which will impart rotation to the said pump shaft and also to the gov ernor balls 26, which will cause the collar 27 to be moved inwardly when a certain predetermined speed of the pulley has been reached, and the throttle valve lever 40 actuated through the shaft 30, the link 39 and the bell crank 36. The speed at which the governor is caused to impart movement to the rod 30 may be regulated through the adjusting nuts 35 and the tension rod 34,Which will increase or decrease the tension of the spring 32.
Thus it will be seen I have provided a governor of simple and inexpensive construction which may be easily and quickl applied to certain types of gas enginesnot already having a governor device, and in which a single pulley may he'utilized to 0perate both the governor and the pump shaft.
I claim as my invention:
1. A governor for gas engines comprising a. support, a shaftrotatively mounted therein, a pulley Wheel on said shaft the hub of which is provided with recesses, governor arms pivotally mounted in said hub, the inner ends or which swing in said recesses, the outer end of said arms being bent substantially at right angles to the inwardly projecting ends and each provided with a gonelfnor hall, a sleeve v-slidaloly mounted on said shaft and designed to engage the inner ends ogt said governor arms, said sleeve being provided with an annular recess, a rod slidably mounted having one end provided With a yoke, the pron-gs of which enter the said annular groove, a collar fixed to said rod, a spring having one end adjacent to said collar, a tension bar slidably mounted in said support having one end engaging the free end or said spring, and adjusting nuts for imparting movement to said tension bar to increase or decrease the tension of said spring.

A governor for gas engines comprising a support, a shaft rotatively mounted therein, a pulley wheel on said shaft, the hub of which is provided with recesses, governor arms pivotally mounted in said hub, the inner ends of which swing in said recesses, the outer end of said arms being bent substantially at right angles to the inwardly projecting ends and each provided with a governor ball, a sleeve slidably mounted on said shaft and designed to engage the innerends of said governor arms,,said sleeve being provided with an annular recess, a rod slidably mounted in parallel relation with said shaft having its inner end provided with a yoke, the prongs of Which enter said annular groove, a vcollar fixed to said red, a spring havingpne end adjacent to said collar, a tension bar .slidahly mounted in said support having one end engaging the free end of said spring, adjusting nuts for imparting movement to said tension bar to increase or decrease the tension of said spring, and link and lever mechanisms for operatively connecting said slidably mounted rod With the throttle valve of a carburetor.
3. A governor for gas engines comprising a support, a. shaft rotative-ly mounted therein. a pulley Wheel on said shaft, the hub of which is provided with recesses, governor arms pivotally mounted in said hub, the inner ends of which swing in said recesses, the other end of said arms being substantially at right angles to the inwardly projecting ends and each provided with a governor ball, a sleeve slidably mounted on said shaft designed to engage the inner ends of said governor arms, a rod slidably mounted to receive movement "from said sleeve, means for operatively connecting said sleeve and said rod, a spring on said rod, means carried by said rod for securing one end of said spring against movement relative thereto, a tension bar slidably mounted in said support having one end engaging the free end 01 said spring, and adjusting nuts for imparting movement to said tension bar to increase or decrease the tension of said spring.
