the line E-F, ,Figure 4 with the cover This invention has reference to improvements incontrolling and recording devices as applied to the recording of movements particularly in the case of vehicles of that kind in which a pendulum member to which a. reciprocating oscillating movement is iinparted by the occurring vibrations is utilized for the purpose of actuating a recording member, stylus, pencil or the like. Among y other features, my invention comprises an important improvement in the devices above referred to in so arranging and constructing the lever or the like on which the stylus is mounted, that the lever may be connected to the pendulum member by means of a friction coupling the friction of which, though being in excess of'that of the moving recording stylus or the like, on the other hand 1s in'- suilicient of preventing .the pendulum member from returning to its vertical position by its own weight in the case of an excessive inclination of the vehicle. Such a kind of yielding lconnectionbetween the pendulum member and the recording means produces the advantage moreover that a stop may be provided for the purpose of limiting the movement of the recording member without any danger of producing injury to the apparatus in the case of unduly large amplitudes ofthe pendulum member. l
Whenemploying a rotatable registering disc for recording purposes it is possible to constantly change or vary the relative posiby reference to the accompanying drawingv tion of the stop and consequently the position of the recording member, stylus or the like in regard to the mechanical transmitting means, such as a gear wheel and a segmental lever by m'eans of 'a clockwork, so as to impart a substantially spiral configuration to the recording line so that one and the same recording disc will retain its usable condition for a comparatively long time, for
several days, or instance. without the ne-` ceity of being exchanged for a fresh one.

The friction coupling or clutch between the parts 1a and 5 in the exemplitication shown v bearing member 7 secured to the front wall ofthe casing, the shaft 2 being thereby free to be readily oscillated. The lever 5 which f is coupled to the pendulum 1 by the frictional clutch referred to is provided with two oppositely directed lever arms 5*1 and 5h of which 5a carries the stylus 10, while the lever arml 5b carries a stud 11 engageable with a guiding and confining slot 12 in the rear wall of the casing 6. In the operation of the apparatus a registering surface 10 is moved past the recording stylus 10, thus for instance by means of clockwork mounted in the box 9. l The device operates substantially in the following manner. As a result of the vibrations of the vehicle during operation or even in the inoperative position thereof and while the engine is moving the pendulum 1, 1a is caused to oscillate and as result thereof the vibrations will be recorded on the writing surface 10"L by the operation' of the recording member 10 and'in view the frictional coupling between the members 1a and 5. The movement of the stylus or recording ber 10 is confined bythe path of the stud 11 in the recess 12 of the rear wall ofthe casing 6. The -friction at the clutch between the members 1a and 5 is larger than the op-' erating friction between the recording surface 10a and the stylus 10, but it is so adjusted that the pendulum member 1, 1a is adapted to re-assume its vertical position by overcoming the frictional resistance at the clutch between the parts 1a and 5, thus for instance in case the vehicle is in the inclined position, so that the pendulum will remain operativ In the exemplication shown in -Figures Y or recording disc, and which ed to become engaged '-17 the carrying arm 4 and 5 ofthe drawing the controlling aparatus is provided with a recording surace 10a serving as a registering disc. this embodiment the recording stylus 10 performs a spiral-like path, so.'as to be able to utilize Athe registering surface fora comparatively long time ofv operation. The clockwork for driving the said registering is not shown is mounted referably in the casing which is preferlink connection 15 to the of the casing, so as to allow of swinging the cover into the open position and to return the cover into the closing osition. The extension of the driving shaft 16 of the clockwork or of the registering or recording disc 10a constitutes a gear member 16 which, in the closing position of the casing sections 6 and 13 is adaptwith a gear segment 14 of which is mounted 18 suitably disposedin the casing section 6, so as to allow of a rotation of the arm 14. Atv its rotating point the bearing arm 14 of the segmental gear 17 is rigidly connected to a lateral projection 19 provided with a substantially forked extremity'adapted to embrace the guide pin 11 at the lever end 5". Thus for instance, i the clockwork mounted in the cover or li 13 of the casing and arranged for a running period of, say one week is slowly running of the drivin pinion 16l which is operatively connecte to the driving shaft of the clockwork and to the registering disc 10* will rotate the segmental lever 17 14, 19 on its pivoting lpoint 18, which results in the change of position of the lever 5 .and of the recording stylus 10 disposed on the lever I end 5'* by the intermission of the parts 19 and 11, so as to slowly alter its position with relation to the center of the rotatable registering or recording disc 10a. By this means a substantially spiral-like recording line is `obtained, so that the rotating registerin or recording surface 10a may be utilize ficiently resilient said supporting means,
much more completely, thus for instance for a running time of an entire week, and without the necessity of being exchanged.
U n the swinging open of the casin driving wheel 16 becomes disengaged rom the segment 17, so 17 and the lever 5 controlled thereby with the recording `stylus 10 may be restored to the initial position at the upper vedge of a freshly. inserted registering or recording sheet 10.
The toothed segment 17 is preferably sufor arranged in such a manner that upon the impmging of two teeth of the.parts 16a and 17 upon each other likely yto occur upon the sudden closing of the casing the easy and not forcible engagement of these operating parts becomes possible.l
It should be understood that the invention has been. shown herein in its broad aspects only, and that it is susceptible of changes and modifications other than those herein the i that this segmental gear 'niv described and illustrated by way of exemplification and without thereby deviating from the spirit and scope of the invention, as set forth in the appended claims.
1. In a motion recording apparatus in combination, su porting means, an oscillatable pendulumody rockingly disposed on a.two-armed lever in frictional engagement with said pendulum-body, recording means on one of the arms of said lever, and guiding and adjusting means on the other lever arm, a movable recording surface in sliding contact with the recording means and producing less friction than the frictional engagement of the lever.
