BACK ADJUSTMENT.'
Application filed August 24, 1925. Serial No. 51,946.
This invention relates to chair or stool adjustments, and particularly to the back rests thereof where it is desired to raise or lower or place the back rest at a different an le of inclination.
. j ne object of the invention is to design a very simple and convenient adjusting mechanism which can be easily and quickly operated by the occupant of the chair while seated in the stool or chair.
Another object is to design an adjustment of substantial construction and which can be very cheaply manufactured by means of punches and dies.
The above and other objects will appear as the specification progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention and in which like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views thereof.
In the drawing.
Fig. 1. is a side view of an adjustable chair showing my improved back adjusting mechanism in place thereon.
Fig. 2. is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the chair seat and the adjusting means.
Fig. 3. is a fragmentary rear View of the structure shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4. is an edge view of one of the adjusting bars and Fig. 5. is a side view thereof.
In the present illustration I have shown the adjusting fixture attached to a full revolving chair or stool, which is also adjustable as to height, and which is the subject matter of an application for Letters Patent filed by me under date Nov. 15th, 24, Serial No. 750,089, this present application being directed to the adjusting feature only.
The chair or stool is provided with a conventional seat 5 which can be formed of any desirable shape or material, the seat frame 6 being formed of angle iron and a sidev rod 7 is pivotally secured to said frame, and is preferably one continuous piece on which a curved back rest 8 is adjustably mounted by means of clips 9 or the like and this back rest automatically adjusts itself to suit and fit the occupants back.
Bolts or pins 10 extend from the seat frame, and side rods or bars 11 engage' therewith, being slotted as shown at 12 and exthe upper end being pivotally connected to a clip 13 by means of a bolt 14, said clip embracing and frictionally engaging the rod 7.
An adjusting bar or member 15 is pivotally secured to the bar 11, and a series of spaced apart notches 16 are formed therein, the bottom of each notch being rounded to form a seat which engages the bolt or pin 10 which extends from the side of the seat frame, a lip 17 being provided on the lower end of this adjusting bar to facilitate manipulation by the chair occupant while seated, the bottom of the notches being rounded to lock the members together and prevent the bar disengaging from the pin.
Adjustment is made by the occupant leaning forward, grasping the lip 17 with the hand, pulling forward to disengage the bar from the bolt or pin 11, and then raising or lowering to the desired height, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing), then engaging the pin in thel proper notch, the slot 12 ering above mentioned.
It will of course be obvious that a wider range of adjustment can be secured by providing a longer slot and a longer adjusting bar with more notches, of chair or stool can be so equipped, or it may be designed so that the entire back can be raised or lowered by providing adjusting bars on both the front and rear vertical members.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that I have perfected a very simple, effective and economical back adjustment which can be easily and quickly maniputending upwardly,
lated.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a seat frame, pins projecting therefrom, a back frame secured to said seat frame and including vertically disposed members having elongated openings therein through which the pins project and notched bars connected to said vertically disposed members and adapted to detachably engage said pins.
2. The combination with a seat frame having pins projecting therefrom, of a back frame secured to said seat frame and including vertically disposed members having elongated openings therein and through which said pins project and notched adjustallowing forthe raising or lowand that any designv ing members pivotally connected to Said verthrough Which said pins project, notched adtically disposed members and adapted to justing members pivotally secured to the 10 engage said pins. vertically disposed members and provided 3. The combination With a seat frame with a lip on the lower end thereof, seid 5 having pins projecting therefrom, a back notches detachably engaging said pins When frame pivotally mounted on the seatl frame in adjusted position. and including vertically disposed members In testimony whereof I affix my signature. having elongated openings therein and ROBIN H.
