' PRINTING DEVICE.
A .lar e number of 'r'nulti'graphor offi'ce printing machines'a're iiiuse throughoutthe 7 country' Such macliin'e has I a rot r drum with parallel overhanging 'rails along its surface formed to carry between them rows I g Patent :No. 1,(,75etfissued Octo'ber'2 0f192 5, to as "signee, The American M ulti-g'r'a ph' om- I'pa'n'y, as assignee "of Clifton Chisholm, shov'vs an embossed iprinting strip, fhaving a single row efjcharaeters and having inwar-M flan ed edges, as "Well "as 'a keyboard machine for T the 'etlicieht pro ductio'nbf *such stris. V Me, "I have de ised "avery'simple xpedient by which existing multigraph 11m- "chines "may be adapted ft'o'car'ry "s'uohj line strips in place efjthe individual type here "tofore used. Such, "device constitutes the 'fslibjeet'm tteroffthis'inventi'on. Y
My invention comprisesstraight bars having grooves in their opposite sides, whereby they may be mounted between the over hanging heads of paralletrails on the multigraph drum, and having on their. tops "dove tailed or overhanging ribs onto 'Whichjthe embossed strips may be'slid. The head of the bar together with the embossed strip maimed thereonjhas preferably the same height a's'the head of the type on the multi'graph', Wherefore my printing device may be used conjunction 'With type in'the same form. My invention is illustrated in the drawings hereof and hereinafter more fully explained. I p
In the drawin'gs'Fig. 1 is a fragmentary end View of a multigraph drum equipped with some of my printing members and also with regular multigraph type; Fig. 2 IS a fragmentary sectional perspective of a portion of such drum so equipped; Fig. 3 1s a vertical section of a flat railed support equipped With one of my printing members and with individual type; Fig. 4 1s a perspective of one of my bars, together With a portion of an embossed strlp mountedthereon. I i In Figs. 1 and 2, A indicates a multlgraph drum or segment. Into the surface of this are set parallel rails B of I-shape in cross. section a short distance apart, each rail hav- .ing a base portion (2 occupying 'a corre sponding groove in the support and an oversurface is the rails are flat and hangini head b separated by side grooves 72". Tie support is ordinarily sllghtly Application filed October 16; 192a serial nd. 141,972.
peened overabove the rail base to lock them in place. After "the drum is. made its outer preferably ground to a true cylinder; 1
The construction in Fig. 3 isfs'imilar except that i'nplace of a segmentof the'drum, 1 haveshown a fiat'base At, and the topsbf I parallel with the bottom of the base.
In Figs 1, 2 and 3, C indicates theusual multigraph "type having "a body provided with grooves on. opposite sides, whereby there is left a head "which maybeabove and rest on the rails,'tvhile'th'ergrooved "sides re- 'ceiv'e the overhanging of the rails, and a base portion stands beneath the "rail heads.
The body carries on its face suitable printing characters a. I
. Now, to enable the embossed strips to be used on s'uch'jrailed'dnims or supports, as a substitute for the type, Iprovide the bars sliown'at in Fig; 4. Eachb'ar is a metal member having grooves 01 on fitsopposite sides, thus "leaving a head member al and "a base 'memberd Such bars are thusad'apted to be inserted 'endtvise into "the channels between the ordinaiyrails B. Each b'arhas along its upper surface arib d with outwardlyinclined edges, in other Words, such -1'ib constitutes "a dove tail.
The embossed printing strips "are designated Each consists ofa thin metal member having upwardlyembossed characters e and having inwardly flanged edges 6 .The dove taild is of such'siz'e that the embossed strip may slide over itsomewhat'snugly and It Will be noticed that the ribs 0Z are conill) undescoring rule to be mounted alongside of any strip.
It will be seen that by the means described embossed line strips may be readily mounted on existing railed drums or supports, thus enabling the latter to utilize embossed strips for complete lines whenever desired. The invention is very useful in increasing the adaptability of existing multigraph machines. By this means the user of such machine may very quickly convert it from a type carrying machine into a machine suitable for carrying embossed printing strips. In circular letter work, for instance, the same line or paragraph is frequently repeated on successive jobs, and by using en1- bossed strips with my bars for such repeated lines and the changeable type for the changed portion the user may greatly reduce the time required for setting up a form.
I claim:
1. The combination with a support having parallel rails with overhanging edges, of a bar adapted to be mounted between adjacent rails, and held thereby, an embossed printing strip, and means for holding it on the top of the bar.
2. The combination with a support having parallel rails with overhanging edges, of a bar grooved on its opposite sides and adapted to be slidably mounted between adj acent rails, an embossed printing strip, and means for holding it on the top of the bar.
3. The combination of a support having parallel rails with overhanging edges, grooved bars adapted to he slid into place between adjacent rails, each bar having on its top an overhanging head, and an en1- bossed printing strip having inwardly flanged edges, said strip being slid into place on the head of the bar.
4. The combination with a base carrying parallel rails with overhanging edges, a bar slid endwise into place between adjacent rails, said bar having on its top a dove tailed rib, and an embossed printing strip mounted on said rib.
The combination with a base carrying parallelrails with overhanging heads, a grooved bar adapted to be mounted between said heads and having a head portion resting on the heads of the rails and a base portion lying in the grooves of the rails beneath their heads, said bar having along its top a dove tailed rib,and an embossed printing strip resting on said rib and having inwardly projecting edge flanges engagmg at the sides of the dove tailed rib beneath the same.
6. The combination with a supporting member having parallel rails with overhanging edges, a row of grooved individual type mounted between a pair of adjacent rails, a grooved bar mounted between a pair olt' adjacent rails, said bar having a projection on its top, and an embossed printing strip mounted on said projection, the char actors of the embossed strip and of the individual type standing the same height-topaper.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a bar adapted to enable a railed support to carry embossed strips, saidbar being a straight member having grooves in its opposite sides and having an upwardly extending overhanging projection at its top.
As a new article of manufacture, a single integral bar for enabling a railed type holding member to carry altcrinitively embossed printing strips, individual, type and said bar having grooves in its opposite sides leaving a base jiortion below the grooves and a head portion above, said head portion having a centrally located dovetailed rib narrower than the rest Of the head extending along the top.
In testin1ony whereoli', I hereunto allix my signature.
