UNITED STATES 1,642,043 PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY V. RAU, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO A. G. SPALDING- & BROS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
GOLF-BAG TOP.
Appilcation filed January 22, 1926. Serial No. 82,894.
This invention relates to' golf bags, and has for its object the provision of a top structure that will reinforce and strengthen the bag while giving it clean lines and a finished appearance. V
The general object of the invention is to provide a top in which the upper end of the bag is bound between metal rings, the rings being permanently attached to the bag without theuse of rivets or similar devices that are unsightly and have a tendency to pull through the material. 7
In the top disclosed herein one of the metal rings has a flange engaging a shoul- The other ring extends over the top of the bag and is secured to the first ring by a rolled joint.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the description, in which a pre ferred embodiment is set forth by way of example.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective of part of a golf bag.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional View showing the parts before they are secured together.
Referring to the drawings more specifi cally, the upper end of the tubular body 1 is-surrounded by a reinforcing band 2. An attaching strip 3 is secured about the upper part of the reinforcing band.
The inner ring t has a cylindrical portion 5 extending within the bag. The lower end of the portion 5 is rolled upon itself to form a bead 6, although it may be rolled about a reinforcing ring to produce a larger bead if desired. The upper part of ring 4 is bent outwardly to form a flange 7 as shown in Fig. 3.
The attaching ring 8 fits closely about the strip 3and has a flange 9 engaging the lower edge of the strip. The ring 8 carries at its upper end an outstanding flange 10.
After the parts are assembled in the position shown in Fig. 3, with the flanges 7 and 10 contacting, these flanges are spun or rolled together to form a double rolled head, as illustratedin Fig. 2. v
A stiffening ring 11 is placed in the angle of the inner ring 4 to brace the structure and prevent distortion.
A top constructed in this manner, with the rings made of aluminum or similar metal,
presents a very trim and sturdy appearance. The double rolled bead withstands shocks and wear, while the internal head 6 takes the wear of the club handles. The attachingring has a line grip on the body as contrasted to a grip at individual points whererivets are used.
l'Vhat Iclairn is 1. In a golf bag, a body, an attaching ring secured about said body, an inner ring having a cylindrical wall extending within the open end of said body, said inner ring being secured to the bag solely by being rolled with the attaching ring to form a bead.
2. In a golf bag, a body, an attaching ring secured about said body, an inner ring having a cylindrical wall extending within the open end of said body, and ending in a bead, said bead forming a buffer piece for the handles of any clubs that may be carried in the bag, said inner ring being secured. to the attaching ring by a rolled seam.
3. A golf bag comprising a body, a shoulder formed on said body, an attaching ring engagingsaid shoulder, an inner ring having a cylindrical wall extending within the open end of said body and ending in a bead, said bead forming a buffer piece for the handles of any clubs that may be carried in the bag, said inner ring being secured to the attaching ring by a rolled seam.
4. In a golf bag, a body, aI-band independ-- ent-ly attached about said body, an attaching ring having a flange extending inwardly and engaging the band, an outstanding flange on said ring, an inner ring extending within the open end of said bodyand having a flange secured to the outstanding flange of the attaching ring by a rolled seam.
5. A golf bag comprising a body..a band independently attached about said body, an attaching ring having a flange extending iii-- wardly and engaging the band, an outstanding flange on said ring, an inner ring extending withinthe' open end of said body and having a flange secured to the outstanding flange of the attached ring by a rolled seam, the inner-ring being formed with a bead which acts as a buiferpiece for the handles HENRY v.
