Sept.v 6, 1927.`
O. c. BOEGE ET AL LOUD SPEAKER Filed April 9, 1924 //1/ VFA/7055 W? ameri- 'lzoiwfys Patented Sept. 6, 1927.
UNTE STATES OTTO C. BOEGE AND HUGO A. A. lIBlEJZiZ, -OB NEW YORL'N. Y. i
LOUD SPEAKER.
Application filed `April 9,
of receiver common in head-sets of radio re-V ceiving instruments. n
'lhe holding of the former type of receiver to the ear of the listener requires the use of the hand and restricts the movement ofthe listener' about the telephone instrument. lt is also very tiring on the listener, if the conversation be long continued. The holding of the head-set receivers over the ears is also annoying and unpleasant, and makes it impossible for a number of persons tosimultaneonsly listen in on one head-set.
The present invention contemplates the provision of an attachment 'suitable for use with telephone receivers .so as to make it un necessary for the listener to apply the receiveror receivers directly to the ears.
It also contemplates a loud speaking attachment to which the receivers may be permanently or temporarily attached as de# sired, and preferably one having a horn which may be made readily removable and which may be easily oriented as desired.
In the accompanying drawings one of the many possible embodiments o-f the present invention is shown for purposes of illustra-- tion, it being understood the invention may be variously embodied in other forms. v-In these drawings:
vvFigure 1 shows a sectional view of the attachment; 1
Figure 2'shows an elevational jview, with parts in section on the line 2`2 of Figure l. rlhe form of the attachment shown in the drawings has a base 10 preferably made in two sections 11 and 12 suitably hollowed out as at 13 and let so that when assembled as shown there is provided a resonating cham@ ber 15 inside the base. This resonating chamber may conveniently be cylindrical as shown, or may take vany other suitable and convenient configuration.
The upper' part 11 of the base is Vprovided with an external seat 16 for supporting a telephone receiver. This seat is preferably provided with a circular flange 17 and a conical portion 18 adaptedl to fit the receiver. VIt is adapted to hold a watch-case type re- 1924. Serial No. 705,197. l
ceiver 19 as shownv in dotted lines in Fig. 1,
or an ordinary telephone receiver 20, .as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. A rounded passage 21 extends inwardly from the. re
ceiver seat so as to reach thev resonating chamber. It will therefore be apparent that the sound vibrations produced by the receiver diaphragm will be directed into the resonating chamber. these vibrations, a horn 22 preferably havinga conical lower end 23'isinserted into a conical hole or passa-ge 24, which extends through the upper part of the basefand comrrics. *A
ln order to utilize .Y
municates with the resonating chamber 15.
rlhis horn may be readily removed from the base or may be turned in any desired direction in an obvious manner. If desired, however, the horn may be fixed in position inv its socket.
While the structure heretofore described is suitable for use with the permanent magnet receiver 20, it isA possible to sov arrange the attachment thatV one may use both receiversof a head-set. Vhen makinganat-v tachment for this purpose, one provides the lower part 12 of the base with a recess 25 adapted to accommodate. the watch-case type receiver .26 which is preferably held against an external seat 27 similar to the seat 16 by a i leaf spring 28 pivotally mounted on the under side of the base, asat29. A rounded passage 30, communicating withthefresonating chamber, is adapted to convey the vibrationsfrom the receiver 26 into the chamv ber. When the two receivers 19 and 26 are used, the vibrations reinforce one another in the chamber y15 and the sound is readily heard through the trumpet 22. This structure may be used with a single .receiver by resting the receiver on the upper seat 16 and placing a dummy in the recess 25 orfotherwise closing the passage 30. Y y
It will thus be app-arent that therel has been provided a. loud-speaking attachment suitable for telephone receivers of various types bythe use of which one is relieved of the direct application ofa receiver to the ear. sounds issuing from theloud speaker, and the listener may move about as desired.
It is obvious that the invention may be embodied in manyforms and constructions, and we wish it to be understood that the particular forms shown are but a few 'of the many forms. Various modifications and changes being possible, we do not liinit ourselves in any Way with respect thereto. Vhat is claimed is: l. A loud speaking attachment for telephone receivers, comprising, a base having a resonating chamber, and having an external seat for a telephone receiver associated with a passage extending to the resonating chamber, and an amplifying horn carried y, by the base and in communication with the resonating chambei.
2. A loud speaking attachment lor telephone receivers, comprising, a base having a 16 resonating chamber, and having a pair ot external seats `tor telephone receivers, each associated with a passage extending to the resonating chamber, and an amplifying horn carried by the base Vand in communication B0 with theV resonating chamber.
3. A loud Vspeaking attachment tor tele plionereceivers, comprising, a base having a sound transmitting opening therein, and having 'a' pair of external seats 'for telephone 85 receivers, each associated with a passage eX- tending to the sound transmitting opening, one of said seats being provided with a device for clamping a receiver in place and the other constructed to permit a receiver to be placed in or removedl from it Without obstruction, and an amplifying horn carried bythe base and in communication with the sound transmitting opening.
4. A loud speaking attachment for telephone receivers, comprising, a base having a resonating chambenand having a pair of external seats for telephone receivers, each associated with a passage extending to the resonating chamber', one of said seats being 40 in a recess adapted to accommodate the receiver, and an aniplifying horn carried by the base and in comniniiication with the resonating chamber.
5. A loud speaking attachment for telephone receivers ,i comprising, a base having asound transmitting passage therein, and
`: having an external seat for a telephone rece1-ver associated with a. passage extending to the sound transmitting passage, and an 5o amplifying horn carried by the base and in communication with the sound transmitting passage, the-lower end o'l' the horn being conical and removably fitted into a conical hole in the top of the base.
phone receivers, comprising, a base having an upper section and alower section, said sections enclosing' a resonating chamber, one ot said sections being provided'with an eX- ternal seat tor telephone receiver associatefl with a passage extending tothe resonating chamber, and an amplifying horn removably carried by the npper section or" the base and in communica ion with the resonating chamber, the lower end ot the horn being coni cal and fitted into a conical hole in the upper section oi the base.
Si. A loud speaking attachmentor telephone receivers, comprising, a base having an upper section and a lower section, said sect-ions enclosing av resonating chamber, each said sections being provided with an eX- tcrnal seat For a telephone receiver associated with a. passage extending to the resonating chamber, the lower section' being provided with a device for clamping the receiver in place, and an amplifying horn removably carried by the upper section of the base and in communication with the resonating chamn ber. Y
9. A loud speaking attachment for telephone receivers, comprising, a base having an upper section and a lower section, said sections enclosing a resonating chamber, the lower of said sections being provided with an external seat for a telephone receiver asso ciated with a. passage extending to the resolisting chamber, said seat being in a recess adapted to accommodate the receiver, and an amplifying horn removably carried bythe upper section ot' the base and in communi- Jation with the resonating chamber.
In testimony whereof We have affixed our signatures to this speeiication.
