PUMP JACK.
Application filed July 22, 1926 'Serial No. 124,178.
My invention relates to apparatus for raising and lowering well tubing.
Animportant object of the invention is to provide apparatus of theabove men tioned character, which is simple and so constructed that a single operator may raise or lower the pipe or tubing.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in whichlike numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates an upstanding support, in the form of a derrick or tower. A block and tackle 6 is suspended from the upper portion of the tower, and a suspension element or chain 7 is also attached to the tower. The numeral 8 designates the pipe or tubing of a well.
The numeral 9 designates the operating grip or jack, which is employed to raise or lower the pipe 8. This grip or jack embodies a U-shaped body portion or socket 10, receiving in its open side a lever 11 pivoted therein at 12. This lever is provided with a curved pipe gripping jaw 13, and beneath the jaw, with a preferably curved recess 14:. Attached to the free end of the lever is a U-bolt 15, adapted to be suspended from a hook 16, of the block and tackle 6. It is obvious that the upward pull upon the lever 11 will cause the jaw 13 to grip the pipe 8, firmly within the body portion or socket 10. The operating grip or jack is carried by the block and tackle 6.
The numeral 17 designates a support grip or jack, which prevents the downward movement of the pipe, when it is being raised, when the operating grip or jack is being lowered upon the tubing, to obtain a new hold. The grip or jack 17 embodies a U-shaped portion or socket'18, receiving in its open side a vertical swinging lever 19, pivoted therein, as shown at 20. The lever 19 is provided with acurved jaw 21, to grip the pipe or tubing, and also has a curved recess 22, beneath the jaw 21. The lever 19 is provided at a point remote from and outwardly from its pivot 20 with a U-bolt 23, for engagement upon a hook 24:, carried by the chain 7. wardly beyond this U-bolt 23 and is provided with an L-shaped foot tripping extension or element 24-, rigidly attached thereto. This L-shaped tripping extension embodies transverse foot engaging part 25, having an upturned lip or end 26.
In the operation of the apparatus, the holding grip or jack 17 is suspended beneath the operating grip or jack 9. The operator may manipulate the block and tackle 6 to raise the operating grip or jack 9, thereby raising the pipe. The holding grip or jack will, of course, release the pipe for upward movement. hen the upper operating grip or jack is released so that it may be lowered for a fresh engagement with the pipe, in the operation of elevating the same, the weight of the pipeis, of course, carried by the sup porting grip or jack 17, which prevents the return downward movement of the pipe lVhen it is desired to lower the tubing or pipe into the well, the operator may ma nipulate the block and tackle 6 with 'his hands and may release the holding grip or jack, by depressing the foot extension 24 of the lever 19. This is an important feature of the invention, as it renders it possible for one man to handle the pipe or tubing, in raising or lowering the same. i
It is to be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a. preferred example of the same. and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.

The lever 19 extends outhaving a jaw to engage the pipe, a block and tackle suspended from the support above the operating grip and connected with the lever outwardly of its pivot, said block and tackle embodying a flexible element extending to one side of the upstanding support, a holding grip arranged beneath the operating grip and including a socket to receive the pipe. a lever pivoted within the socket and having a jaw to engage the pipe, an attaching element secured to the last named lever outwardly or its pivot, a suspension elernent secured to the upstanding support above the holding grip and secured to the attaching element whereby the holding grip is'supported at a suitable elevation to permit of the outer end of the last named lever being swung downwa dly sniiieiently so that its jaw Will release the pipe when it is desired to lower the pipe, and a foot engaging element attached to'the outer end of the last named lever the foot engaging: element and said flexible element extending to the same side of the upstanding sup- GI-IA RLEY r. sol-manna.
