This invention relates to a composite table top, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a table top so constructed and arranged as to prefi vent the accidental skidding, slipping or .sliding of the objects supported thereby and further whereby the edges and corners of the top willbe prevented from being marred or injured when impacting against an obstruction or when hit by a thrown object or an object carried by a person;

A further object of the invention is to provide a composite table top, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, and consisting of a body-portion having fixedly secured therewith in enveloping position with respect to the sides, corners and top thereof, resilient protecting, sound reducing, cushioning and corner reinforcing means acting to prevent the accidental skidding, slipping orsliding of the objects supported by the table top,

materially reducing sound caused by game counters or other ob ects cast or thrown thereon, and further preventing the marring '25 or injuring of the sides and'corners of the top.

f Referring to the drawings in detail, '1 generally denotes a composite table topflwhich is of any suitable contour and as illustrated of polygonal shape and formed with round ed corners referred to generally by the reference character 2.

The table top 1 comprises a body portion 3 of anysuitable material, preferably wood. The bodyportion 3 is formed from a single slab of material with the corners, thereof squared and further with the corners thereof referred to generally by the reference character 4 inset with respect to the side edges of the bodyportion 3. The body por- A tion 3 conforms in contour to the shape of the table top other than thatthe table top when complete is formed with rounded corners and the body portion is set up with squared corners. The strips 29 between each pair of rah, heted portions 9 are furthermore secured to the body portion 3 by a spaced upwardly extending and inwardly inclined hold fast devices 35 which have their heads countersunk in the bottom edges of the strips 29.

The strips 20, 21 act as a reinforcing means for the corners of the body portion 3 aswell as the table top, and'further said strips 29 in connection with the strips 20 and 21 set up rounded resilient corners for the table top 1 and further said strips 29 preventthe indenting, marring, or defacing the sides of the tab-1e top 1 when such sides meet with an obstruction or hit by other objects. By constructing the element 12, with the flange 14 of less thickness than the thickness of the body portion 18 of said element, and extending the strips to the.

A composite table top, in accordance with this invention is one of long durability, and as it includes a combined protecting, sound reducing, cushioning and reinforcing means, which is constructed of resilient material of the desired thickness, the top is provided with aprotecting, sound reducing,cushi0ning and reinforcing element and which prevents the accidental skidding of slipping of' any articles mounted thereon, as well as preventing injury to the body portion of the top when heavy or hot articles are mounted or supported by the element 12. The element 12 also provides means to deaden thenoise when game counters are cast or thrown thereon, as the material from which said element-is constructed will materially reduce the sound of such game counters when they are cast on the top, will also prevent the counters from slipping and furthermore prevent direct contact thereof with the wooden or other body'portion 3. The providing of the body portion 8 at the corners thereof with the resilient strips 20 and 21, in connection with thestrip 29, set up cushioned rounded cornersenhancing the appearance of the top, and further preventing injury to the corners when they meet with an obstruction. The setting up of the strips 29 in the manner as shown protect the side edges of the body portion 3 or in other words set up the table top with resilient side edges acting as a protecting medium.

It is thought, that the many advantages of a composite table top, in accordance with this invention can be readily understood, and although the pref-erred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

1. A composite table top comprising a body portion having a rabbet at each end of each side edge, reinforcing strips secured at each rabbet, protecting strips, each protecting'strip secured to a side edge of said body portion and opposing and secured to a pair of reinforcing strips, a cushioning element extended throughout the upper face of and secured to said body portion and opposing and secured with the upper edges of said reinforcing and'protecting strips, said reinforcing strips arranged in overlapping relation and said protecting strips having their top and bottom edges flush with the top and bottom edges of the reinforcing strips.
