1927' F. R. BURGESS CONTAINER AND SEALING MEANS THEREFOR Filed March 5, 1927 FJE 9. Z

UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
FRANCIS R. BURGESS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN FLANGE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
CONTAINER AND SEALING MEANS THEREFOR.
Application filed March 3, 1927. Serial No. 172,377.
My invention relates to containers which are provided with bungs in the form of threaded plugs which are received withln the threaded interiors of bushings that are as sembled with wall portions of the containers,
the invention finding particular use in connectionwith barrels in which oil or other liquid is packaged for shipment.
The invention has for its object the provision of means for obstructing undetectable access to and removal of the plugs. To this end I place a hood upon the outer end of the plug, which usually has a tool engaging formation and a circumscribing flange upon its outer end, access to which being obstructed by the hood which surrounds and encloses said flange and tool engaging formation.
The invention will be more fully explained in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a view illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, the bushing and a portion of the container wall being shown in section while the plug and hoodare shown in elevation with a portion of the hood broken away; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the plug and its hood on line 22 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on a larger scale on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a side view of the hood before it is applied. 1
The container, such as a barrel, has one wall 1 thereof formed with a depending rim 2 which surrounds a circular hole formed through this wall. An interiorly threaded bushing 3 is snugly received within this hole and is closely surrounded by said rim, this bushing being shown with an outwardly curled inner edge portion 1 which grips the inner edge of said rim 2 and a circumscribing flan e 5 which is tightly seated upon the wall 1, t iis flange desirably lapping this wall on the exterior of' the container. The closure plug 6 is screwed within the bushing 3 and is formed with a circumscribing flange 7 which laps the flange 5 and wall 1, an annular sealing-gasket 8 being desirably interposed between the flanges to render the joint between the plu and bushing fluid-tight. ,The flange 7 is esirably conically tapered toward the wall 1. The outer end of the plug is formed with two tool engagingformations, one in theform of an enlargement 9 which is of hexagonal or polygonal exterior contour, and the other in the form of a recess 10 extending through [the enlargement 9 and into the body of the plug, this recess being of square or other contour to receive a wrench having a plug formation snugly receivable within and corresponding in shape to said recess.
The sealing device or uard of my invention is in the form of a ood 11 whose skirt portion 12 is inwardly turned to snugly embrace the tapering flange 7 .and desirably terminates at the gasket 8 to prevent the flange 7 from being reached by a dislodging tool. The crown of the hood covers the outer end of the plug and its tool engaging formations 9 and 10.
The material of which the hood is made '0 is desirably very thin sheet metal such as tin which will readily tear or become ruptured if b any attempt is made to loosen the plug as by means of wrenches applied to the plug flange 7 or the plug enlargement 9. The plug flange 7 is formed with angular portions 7 adjacent thehood to aid in tearing the hood when a dislodging tool is applied to the flange. The taper of the flange makes it difiicult to apply a dislodging tool thereto. so
Changes may be made without departing from the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination with acontainer 35 formed with a hole through a wall thereof and carrying screw threads surrounding said hole; of a closure plug screwed into said threads and having a flange at its outer portion; and a hood carried by the plug and so embracing said flange, said flange being formed with angular vportions adjacent said hood to aid in tearing the hood when a dislodging tool is applied to said flange.
2. The combination with a container formed with a hole through a wall thereof and carrying screw threads surrounding said hole; of a closure plug screwed into said threads and having a flange at its outer portion which tapers toward said container wall; and a hood carried by the plug and embracing said flange, said flange being formed with angular portions adjacent said tion which tapers; and a hood carried by the hood to aid in tearing the hood when a displug and einbracingsaid flange, said flange 10 lodging tool is applied to said flange; being formed with angular portions adjacent 3. The combination with a container said hood to aid in tearing the hoodwhen a 5 formed with ahoie through a wall thereof disiodging tool is'applied to said flange.
and carrying screw threads surrounding said In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe hole; of a closure plug screwed into said my naine.
threads and having a flange at its outer por- FRANCIS R. BURGESS.
