J. F. THIESSEN COMBINED ASH TRAY AND CIGARETTE AND CIGAR EXTINGUISHER Filed July 19 1926 INVENTOR. LA 5' TH/ESSEN.
ATTORNEY.
Patented Aug. 30, 1927.
UNITED STATES JOHN F. THIESSEN, 0F LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED ASH TRAY AND CIGARETTE AND CIGAR EXTINGUISHER.
Application filed July 19, 1926. Serial No. 123,403.
My invention relates to smokers appliances, and more particularly to a combined ash tray and lighted cigarette or cigar extinguisher, whereby these may be quickly extinguished at any time, to be later re-lighted, if desired.
It accordingly is an object of my invention to provide a novel form of device having a support or stand, preferably in the form of a. horizontal bar, supported by a set of legs, which may be integral with each end of said bar, and preferably curved and flared away from each other, an ash tray or receptacle being suspended from said' bar, preferably by a set of books and loops, forming an artistic construction, a lighted cigarette or cigar extinguisher being associated with said bar, said extinguisher preferably comprising the bar itself and a lever equipped with an operating handle, being pivoted to said bar. t
It is also an object of my invention to provide a novel form of device which is simple in construction, easy and inexpensive to manufacture, artistic in appearance,'and one which will thoroughly and reliably effect the objects intended.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will become more apparent as the description thereof proceeds.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters denote similar parts. In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my invention with the ash tray removed, the cigarette or cigar extinguisher being in open position,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank out of which the ash tray may be formed,
Fig. 3'is a perspective view of theash tray,
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the device assembled, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of a modification, illustrating the manner of using the same.
Describing my invention more in detail, my novel device comprises a stand or support designated generally by the numeral 2, which stand or support consists of a preferably horizontal bar or other member 4 on which may be positioned the cigarette or cigar extinguisher, or said extinguisher may have the bar form part thereof, which bar is adapted to coact with a lever 6, pivoted if desired, to said bar at 8, said lever preferably having a flat bottom to coact with the fiat upper surface of the bar 4 to extinguish the lighted cigarette or cigar, as depicted more particularly in Fig. 4, the free end of the lever 6 being equipped with a handle 10, preferably curved as shown, for operating said lever. It will be understood of course that the shape of the bar 4 and the lever 6 may be any that in practice may b desired. -For the sake of simplicity in construction, one end of the'bar 4 is equipped with a slot 12 in which the lever 6 is pivoted, said lever being of solid metal of any character or hollow, or of sheet material, and bent, pressed or-cast to shape.
To provide a means for supporting the bar 4, I preferably form a set of legs 14, integral with said bar, whichlegs may be curved as shown, and flared away from each other as indicated at 16. It-will be clear, however, that said legs may be secured to said bar in any manner desired, and'stiil remain within the province of my invention.
The ash tray associated with the stand or support 2 is depicted in Fig. 3, and may form an integral part of said support or be detachable therefrom, or may be rigid therewith or swingingly associated with said support by means of-a set of loops or other suspending elements 20, said loops or other elements being suspended from hooks 22, associated with the bar 4 in any manner preferred. Any desired number of said hooks and loops may be provided.
The ash tray or receptacle 18 may be cast, stamped or pressed out of any prepared material, or may be formed as depicted in Fig.
2, out of a blank, cut away as shown, thus forming extensions 7 24, projecting from a bottom 26, the tray or receptacle in completed form being soldered or otherwise secured together. It will be understood also that the shape of said tray is immaterial,
and may be any found desirable.
In use the tray 18 is suspended from the hooks 22 by means of the loops 20, providing for its ready removal when it is desired to empty said tray.
To extinguish the lighted cigarette or cigar 28, it is held with its lighted end onto the bar 4, as shown in Fig. 4, the lever 6 Inc being lifted away from said bar by the handle 10. Lowering the lever 6, said lever will coact with the bar 4 to extinguish the ashes falling into the tray or receptacle 18, as clearly depicted in said figure.
in Fig. 5 I have shown an aite'r ivc form of my invention, in which an a1 iistic figure which may, for example, be a parrot 2, equipped with an operating feather tuft 10, the upper part of the bill 6, hinged at Sfllunctioning as the cigarette or cigar extinguisher, when coacting with the lower part of said bill 4, the tray 18 being detachably associated with said parrot in any manner desired. The operation of this form of my invention is precisely that of the form previously described.
While I have thus described my invention with great particularity it will be clear that it may be modified throughout a wide range. I accordingly do not propose to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, and reserve the right in practice to make any and all modifications thereof that fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, in combination, a horizontal bar, sets of curved legs extending from each end of said bar for supporting the same, a lighted cigarette or cigar extinguisher on said bar, an ash tray positioned below said bar and between said legs, and loop and hook means associated with said bar and said tray whereby said tray may be detachably supported by said bar.
2. In a device of the class described, in combination, a stand, a lighted cigarette and cigar extinguisher associated with said stand, and an ash tray in justaposition with said stand, said ash tray being formed from a blank comprising a body portion, and tour extensions projecting from said body portion, said blank being cut away to provide said extensions.
3. In a device of the class described, a stand comprising a horizontal bar, sets of legs depending from each end or" said bar, a set of hooks extending from each side of said bar, a receptacle adapted to be suspended from said hooks and positioned between said legs, and a lever pivoted to one end of said bar, said leverbeing adapted to be moved toward and away from said bar. ash receiver and butt extinguisher comprising a horizontal bar having a set or curved legs integral therewith and depending theretrom, a set of hooks extending from each side. of said bar, a rectangular ash receptacle suspended from said hooks by a set of loops positioned on each side of said bar, and a flattened lever pivoted to one side of said bar, said lever being provided with an upwardly turned portion functioning as a handle for said lever.
In testimony whereof I have si'gned my name to this specification.
JOHN F. THIESSEN.
