PASTEURIZING APPARATUS.

This invention relates to an apparatus for the Pasteurization of bottled milk.
An object of the invention is the provision or a process for Pasteurizing'bottled milk and in which the filled bottles are cooled for approximately five minutes by passing the same under a cooling liquid and then removing the bottles under a spray of hot liquid and retaining the bottles at approximately 180 temperature for thirty minutes. At the end of such time the bottles are then con veyed under a cooling spray and retained there for approximately fifteen minutes, after which the bottles may be removed by an endless conveyor.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device for Pasteurizing bottled milk and in which the bottles are slowly conveyed through a closed chamber having reservoirs at its upper end provided with spraying means adapted to be auto matically operated as the bottles pass beneath the various types of spraying means.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 designates a cabinet formed of steel which is closed at'its opposite ends by a pair of doors 11 held against movement by means of latches 12. The cabinet 10 is provioed with achamber disposed between reservoirs located at different horizontal levels or respectively at the top and bottom of saidcabinet. A reservoir is disposed upon the top of the cabinet and is adapted to provide a receptacle for water and is heated by means of a series of coils of pipe 37 disposed therein. These pipes are connected in any approved mahner'with a source of live steam so that the water in the reservoir 36 may be main tained at approximately 180 F. A second reservoir 38 is located above the chamber and is adapted to be cooled by means of coils 39 located within the reservoirs. These coils are connected with a suitable source of refrigerant for maintaining Water in the reservoir 38 at approximately F. v
Adjacent the bottom of the cabinet a tank These is placed which is divided into three reservoirs 39, 40 and 41 by partitions 42. Reservoirs 39 and 41 are connected together by a pipe controlled by a valve 50 In the chamber 35 are located a plurality of nozzles 46 connected to a pipe 47 which in turn is in communication with the bot tom of the reservoir 36 which contains the hot water. A plurality or nozzles 48 connected with a pipe 49 are also located in the chamber The pipe 49 is in open communication with the bottom of the reservoir 38 and in which the cold water is retained. Thus it will be seen that cold water is sprayed downwardly and which is collected by reservoirs 39 and 41. A drain 51 is connected with reservoir 40 so that the water from said reservoir flows directly to reservoir 100 while water from reservoirs 39 and 41 drains directly into a reservoir 101 by means of a pipe 52. Reservoirs 100 and 101 are separated by an air channel 102.
A container 53 having its opposite ends open and adapted to be closed by doors 54 is placed upon the travelling conveyor 14 and moved slowly through the cabinet 10. This container has a perforated top 55 whereby either hot or cold water may percolate through the openings and be discharged upon the bottled milk located on the trays 56. These trays are supported at their edges by means of angle arms 57 secured to the side walls of the container.
Secured to the top 55 of the container are cleats 58 which extend outwardly of said container and in longitudinal alinement with a vertical plane passing through the center of the casing. A tracks 60 U-shape in cross section has a downwardly curved portion 61 adapted to be engaged by rollers 62 carried at one end of a curved arm 63 pivotally mounted at 64 on a U-shaped bracket 65 which is carried by the top wall of the cham ber 35. On the end of the curved arm 63 which is opposite to that carrying the roller 62 is formed a valve 66 which engages the open free end of the nozzles 48 and the roller 62 is of sufficient weight to maintain the nozzle closed and prevent escape of water from the tank 38 until operated by the track 60.
The nozzles 46 are also provided with valves 67 carried at the free ends of levers or curved arms 68 which are pivoted at 69 on the brackets 70 supported from the top wall 35 of the chamber 35. A pipe 71 is connected with the pump 33 and is adapted to withdraw water from reservoir 101 and force saidwater into chamber 38. The upper end of the pipe is'connected to a lateral extension 72 of the chamber 38., The water from reservoir is forced upwardly through pump 34 through pipe 73 which has its upper end connected with an extension of reservoir 36. By this means the hot water in reservoirs 36 and 100 is maintained in constant circulation while the cold water in reservoirs 39, 41 and 38 are also kept in constant circulation by the pump 33. The pump 33 is connectedwith reservoir 101 while pump 34 is connected with reservoir 100. From an inspection of Figure 3 it will be noted that chambers 36 and 38 are separated by an air space 74.
Ht will be noted from Figure 5 that the nozzles 48 are grouped in pairs with a plurality of cups 66 forming the closures for sealing the nozzles. The ends of levers 63 near the roller 62 are bifurcated to receive the roller upon an axle 78.
The operation of my device isas follows:
The bottled milk which is to be Pasteurized is placed upon the trays 56 within the container 53 and the container is then placed upon the travelling carrier 14, the doors 11 having been opened to permit the container being carried within the chamber 35. The motor 32 is then started and the carrier slowly conveys the container within the chamber 35 and as it passes beneath the nozzle 43 the valve 45 isopened to permit cold water being sprayed upon the perforated top 55 through which the water percolates and comes in contact with the bottles on the trays 56.
As the container is moved forwardly beyond the nozzle 43 the first wheel 62 carried by the arm 68 engages the curved portion 61 of the track 60 and rides upwardly until it reaches the horizontal portion of the track. As the wheel rides upwardly on the curved portion 61 the arm or lever 68 is being rocked and moving the valve 67 away from the nozzles 66, permitting water to escape through the nozzles from tank 36 which carries the hot water, there by causing the bottles to be sprayed. As the container still continues its inward journey the next succeeding roller 62 is engaged by the track thereby releasing the valve 67 from the second nozzle 46 thereby permitting further hot water to be sprayed upon the perforated top 65 whence the water passes over the bottles. The third wheel 62 is also engaged by the track 60 opening the valve engaging the nozzles46 and spraying further hot water upon the bottles.
\Vhen the track 60 reaches the last two rollers 62 their respective arms 63 are oscil' lated releasing the water from the nozzles 48 which is sprayed downwardly upon the bottles and suddenly chilling the same and their contents.
The length of the chamber 35 considered in connection with the speed of the travell ng carrier 14 is such that it will require five minutes for the bottles to pass beneath the nozzle 43 thirty minutes to pass below the nozzles 36, and fifteen minutes to pass beneath the nozzles 48. By this process the and then conveyed into packages for ship-' ment.

It will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 6 that the reservoirs 39 to 41, inclusive, are arranged longitudinally of the device and at one side of the operating mechanism for the traveling carrier 14. is connected to the container 53 and is adapted to project through the lower open end of the chamber so that all water whether hot or cold which is sprayed through the perforated top into the container 53 may be discharged through the spout 120 adjacent the closed bottom 121 of the container, the spout directing the warm or cold water into the various reservoirs 39 to 41, inclusive. The reservoirs are so arranged that the reservoir 39 will receive the cool water from the nozzle 43 While tank 40 will receive the hot water which has been discharged from the nozzles 46. The reservoir 41 will receive the cool water from reservoir 38 after it has sprayed down through the chamber 53. The pump 33 is adapted to return the water from tank 101 to tank 38 while pump 34 returns the water from tank 100 to tank 36. in outlet pipe 122 connected with tank 100 is adapted to drain the tank when necessary. A valve 124 in the pipe 125 controls the draining of the water from tank 100.
Cool water is sprayed from the nozzle 43 onto the bottles in the container as said con tainer enters the sterilizing chamber 35, Due to the fact that milk after being ban died during bottling or during conveyance of the milk to the container 53 will be heated to substantially the temperature of the atmosphere which would tendto caus bacteria in the milk to cultivate. The milk preferably then passed under a cooling agent from the nozzle 43 and thoroughly cooled to check the growth of any bacteria before it is passed under the first heating; medium. Otherwise, if the milk were passed under the heating fluid the initial heating would be suflicient to increasethe bacterial growth of themilk which is undesir-able.
What I claim is: l. A Pasteurizing :device comprising; a cabinet, a travelling carrier movable hrough the cabinet, a plurality of reservoirs located below the travelling carrier, a pair of reservoirs at the top of the cabinet and means for releasing the water from the re- A spout 120 servoirs at the top of the cabinet for spraying, a container for carrying bottled liquid adapted to be drawn through the chamber by the travelling carrier and sprayed by liquids of different temperatures which are contained within the reservoirs at the top of the cabinet, nozzles connected with the reservoirs, atthe top of the chamber, means 00-- acting with the ends of the nozzles for main taining the nozzles closed, and means mounted on the top of the movable container for actuating the closing means of the nozzles to open position.
2. A device for Pasteurizing milk comprising a cabinet having reservoirs at its top for r ceiving respectively hot and cold Water, reservoirs at the bottom of the cabinet and adapted to receive the hot and cold ,water released from the upper reservoirs,
said cabinet having a chamber located between the upper and lower reservoirs, a travelling carrier movable through the chamber and adapted to transport bottled liquids through the chamber, nozzles connected with the reservoirs at the top otthe cabinet, means co-acting with the ends of the nozzles for closing the nozzles, and means mounted on the top of the travelling carrier adapted to release the closing means to permit liquids to be sprayed upon the 9 bottled liquids passing through the Chill? her, the liquids discharged from the nozzle beingadapted to drain into the reservoirs at the bottom of the cabinet.

A device for Pasteurizing liquids comprising a cabinet having a pair of reservoirs at its upper end, a plurality of reservoirs its lower end, said cabinet having a chamber between the'reservoirs, a travelling carrier adapted to move through the chamber, a plurality of nozzles inopen com munication with the containers at the top of the cabinet and disposed within the chamber, arms pivotally mounted on the top of the cabinet and having valves engag ing the nozzles for closing the same; rollers carried at the opposite ends of the arms and ot su'flicient weight to maintain the valves in sealed engagement with the nozzles, a containcr adapted to carry a plurality of bottles,
disposed on the travelling carrier, and tracks mounted on top of'the container and engaging the rollers for oscillatingthe arms and releasing the valves from the nozzles.

the cabinet and disposed within the chamher, arms pivotally mounted on the top of the cabinet and having valves engaging the nozzles for closing the same, rollers carried at the opposite ends of the arms and of sutficient weight to maintain the valves in sealed engagement with the nozzles, a container adapted to carry aplurality of hottles disposed on the travelling carrier, tracks mounted on top of the container and engaging the rollers for oscillating the arms and releasing. the valves from the nozzles, a nozzle located adjacent one end of a container and connected with a source of cold water for spraying the bottled liquids in the container when the container enters the chamber. 7

A device for Pasteurizing liquids compri'sing a cabinet having a pair of reservoirs at its upper end, a plurality of reservoirs at its lower end, said cabinet'having a chamber between the reservoirs, a travelling carrier adapted to move through the chamber, a plurality of nozzles in open communication with the containers at the top of the cabinet and disposed within the chamber, arms'pivotally mounted on the top of the cabinet and having'valves engaging the nozzles for closing the same, rollers carried at the opposite ends of the arms and of sufi'icientv' eight to ma'i'ntainthe valves in sealed engagement with the nozzles, a container adapted to carry a plurality of bottlesdisposed on the travelling carrier, tracks mounted on top of the container and engaging ther'olle'rs for oscillating the arms 1 and releasing the valves from the nozzles, a pump connected with the lower reservoir, and a conduit connecting a pump with an upper reservoir for returning the waterfrom the lower reservoirs to the upper reservoirs.

A device for Pasteurizing bottled liquids comprising a cabinet having a chamber therein, a travelling carrier movable through v said chamber, a container for carrying bottled liouids and comprising a housing closed at all sides and open at its bottom, said housing having a perforated top, cleats projecting from the opposite ends of the perforated top and disposed in longitudinal alinement with the vertical plane passing through the center of the casing, a track having an intermediate horizontal portion with the ends curved and bent downwardly and securedto' the free ends of the cleats.
