HEM-EDGE DIE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, I'TUMBERT O. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hem-Edge Dies, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to dies and more particularly to a form of die capable of shaping hats.

The principal object of the invention is the provision of a hat die in which the crown, brim and hem-edge are formed in a single operation.

Another object is the provision of a die made up of several sections, the crown-sec tion being removable with relation to the brim section so that a number of different style crowns may be shaped and still retain the original shape of the brim.

A further object of the invention consists of a crown section made up of two parts, one part slidable upon the other which permit of the removal of the hat, from the die, without burning the hands of the operator.

lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangen'ients of parts which will hereinafter be fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings the invention consists chiefly of three sections, namely, the brim, section forming the base, a crown section. 11 and, a clamping ring 12.

The brim section 10 is cast from -a single piece of material and in the present instance is elliptical in plan as shown in Figure 2, but the same may be of any configuration desired. The numeral 13 designates a wall formed on the member 10 which in the present instance, is shown as curved downward, the outer edge of said wall terminating with a shoulder 14;. The inner periphery of the section 10 has formed there-in at diametrically opposite points, with dove tail slots 15. Legs 16 support the said section 10.

The crown section 11 is removably secured to the brim section 10 and comprises two parts 17 and 18, the said parts 17 and 18 having inclined surfaces 19 and 20 for a purpose to be presently described. Tongues and grooves 21 and 22 are formed in the parts 17 and 18 along the inclined surfaces thereof. This part 17 rests directly upon the brim section 10, and is provided with lugs 23 which enter the dove-tail slots 15. The incline surface 19, of the part 17 is provided with a slot 24 which receives a bolt 25 carried by a partition 26, of the part 18. A thumb nut 27 is threaded onto the bolt 26, but is sufiiciently loose to allow the part 18, to slide upon the part 17. A hat 28 is shown upon the die in Figure 1, and is held thereon by means of the clamping ring 12. The

bottom wall 29 of the ring 12 conforming to the shape of the wall 13 of the brim section 10, otherwise the construction is similar to the well known ring now in use.

In the present form of hat dies it very often happens that the operator is burned when removing the hat from the die, it being understood that the die is always heated during the shaping operation.- It will be seen that the hat may be very easily removed from the die by sliding the part 18 over the part 17 as shown in Figure 1, of the drawing, the clamping ring 12 having previously been removed.

By reference to Figure 1, it will be seen that a hem-edge 30 is formed on the brim of the hat, this being accomplished with the single operation of the shaping of the crown and brim. lVhen the hat is removed, from the die it is stitched as shown at 31, in Figure 5.

In Figure 6, there is shown a slightly modified form of die for a hem-edge known in the trade as a cable edge. This is accomplished by providing the outer periphcry of the brim section 10, With a rib 32,

and the ring section 12, with a groove 33. Vhen removed from the die, the hem-edge is stitched as shown in Figure 7.

While there has been shown and described one form of th invention, no limitations are necessarily made to the exact details of construction, but thatchanges, modifications and alterations as come within the claims maybe resorted to when so desired.

a continuous shoulder formed at the outer end of said Well, a bell-crown die removably supported by said base, said bell crown die formed of a stationary section and a movable section, beveled faces formed on said sections, co-acting tongues and grooves formed on said beveled faces for permitting tinuous shoulder for forming the crown brim and hem edge of a hat.

2. A device of the class described comprising a base having a brim forming wall, a continuous shoulder formed at the outer end of said wall, a bell-crown die removably supported by said base, said bell crown die formed of a stationary section andv a movable section, co-acting beveled faces formed on. said sections for permitting sliding move ment of said movable section with respect to said stationary section, a slot formed in the beveled face of said stationary section, a bolt carried by said movable section and extending through said slot, a nut threaded on said bolt for preventing the separation of said sections, co-acting grooves and tongues formed in said sections, and a clamping ring having its underface formed "of a shape to conform to said brim forming wall and the periphery of said ring co-acting with said continuous shoulder for forming the crown brim and hem edge of a hat.
