HAIR-HAVING IRON.

To a whom may concern:
Be it known that I, Ennnn W. Hoiunn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HairlVzrvii1g Irons, of which the following is a specifica tion.
My present invention relates to improvements in hair waving irons of the hand operated type and adapted especially for imparting to the hair a Marcel orsimilar wave. In most toilet articles of this character now on the market and utilizing a pair of pivoted jaws of the scissors type, the relation of the jaws of the implement is such as to prevent proper and efficient operation otthe device except when only a thin strand of hair is being pressed between the jaws. And the devices now in use are incapable of properly performing their functions it the strand of hair to be waved is comparatively thick or brought into close proximity to the pivot of the jaws.
The primary object of my invention is the provision. of means whereby the aws may be spaced apart and will automatically adjust themselves to various thicknesses of strands oi hair, and whereby the jaws are made to be operative throughout their length. To
accomplish this purpose, and overcome these objectioinible features in existing devices, I provide a movable pivot member or rivet and construct the jaws at their pivot points in such n'iaimer that they are movable with relation to the pivot and may be adjusted automatically for accon'nnodating various thicknesses of strands of hair. The device as thus constructed and arranged is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive in cost of production. The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts involving av pair of pivoted jaws of the scissors type each having a slotted head, a pivot member in the slots, and means or 'ried by a handle of the device for (re-action with a jaw connected with the opposite handle, for retaining the jaws in adjusted position, together with other features of construction, as will hereinafter be more fully pointed out and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged in 1924. Serial No. 715,585.
accordance with the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a curling iron or waving iron constructed according to and embodying the principles of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail View partly in section showing the pivotal connection of the jaws, the adjusting spring and the tension adjusting means for the spring.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view partly in section showing by dotted lines the adj ust ment of the relatively movable jaws.
In carrying out my invention I utilize the well known type of pivoted jaws l and 2, preferably V-shape in cross section, the inner jaw or iron 1 of which may be solid and the outer jaw open or hollow to fitthereover', and one or both'being adapted for heating and use in usual manner. The respective jaws have crossed handles or integral shanks 3 and 4tand the shank 3 has an open head 5 to receive the complementary head 6 01 the shank 4. Both heads are fashioned with complementary slots, a single slot 7 being provided in the head 5 and a pair of slots 8 alined therewith are provided in the open head 6. 'llhrough these registering slots a pivot pin or rivet 9 is passed and provided with retaining heads 10 at both its ends to hold the heads in frictional engagement, but of course permit relative movement oi the heads on the pivot.
Through this slot and pin connection the two heads are loosely supported and relatively movable on their pivot member, but
a Hat leaf spring 11 is provided to afford resilient and adjustable means for retaining them in operative position. This spring is carried by the shank l to which it is secured at one end by means of a screw 12, and the free end 13 of the spring has a frictional hearing on the head 5 of the shank a and jaw 1, thus holding the jaw l. and its head 5 in proper relation to the comp]en'ientary outer aw 2 and its head 6. It will be noted that the longitudinal axis of the slots at a slight angle to the perpendicular with relation to the longitudinal axis of. the jaws, and that the aws while in parallelism, may be spaced apart substantially the length. of the slots. Regardless of the relative position of the jaws they are pivoted on the pin or rivet 9 and may be moved with the pin as a center. Thus the jaws may be separated, against the tension of the spring 13 to accommodate various thicknesses. of strands of hair, and the arrangement of the inner head within the open head permits relative movement of these parts, but prevents lateral movement or wabbling of the pivoted members. As indicated in Fi 3 by dotted lines a thick strand of hair may be accomn'iodated near the pivot point or fulcrinn to receive the application thereto oi the lever action of the in'iplement for compressing the strand in the formation of a. wave. The aws, when in parallel-ism, are also capable of operating on a strand of hair that may extend from the free ends ot the jaws to the pivoted heads, and the application of power will be uniform throughout the length of the jaws. In this manner a wave or crimp of uniform quality may be imparted to the hair which will be of a length corresponding to the length of the implement from the pivot to the ends of the jaws.
The implement is provided with two handles, of which handle 14 is fixed. on the shank 3, and the handle 15 is rotatable on the threaded end 16 of the shank 4:. The rotatable handle is designed to co-act with its shank for regulating the tension of the spring 11 and is fashioned with a threaded sleeve portion 15 the tree or open end-of which may be rotated around the spring 11. As the screw motion is given to the rotary handle it is projected toward the pivot and toward the free end of the anchored spring for the purpose of ridingdown the spring and holding it in close contact with the shank 4:. This act-ion reduces the length of the resilient portion oi the spring and tends to increase its rigidity and application of power to the head 5.
F or retaining the adjustable handle inv adjusted position and preventing accidental rotation of the handle I utilize a snap spring or pawl 17 located in a groove and carried by the sleeve portion 15 of the handle 15. As the handle is turned this snap spring or pawl will engage with a selected one of severallongitudinal slots 18 in the shank 4, and
prevent rotation of the sleeve and handle, except when force is applied thereto for the purpose.
Having thus "fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by. Letters Patent is 1. In a device as described the combinas tion with pivoted aws each having a handle and a slotted head, of a pivot member in the slotted heads whereby the jaws may be spaced substantially apart, and means carried by one handle for co-action with the head of the other handle for retaining said jaws in adjusted position.
2. The combination with pivoted jaws each having a handle-and a siotted pivot head whereby the jaws may be spaced substantially apart, o t resilient means carried by one handle for co-act-ion with the head of the other handle for retaining said jaws in'adjusted position, and means for varying the resiliency ot the retaining means.
3. The combination with pivoted aws each having a handle and a slotted pivot head whereby the jaws may be spaced substantially apart, or a spring carried by one handle and l-iaving a bearing against the head of the other handle for retaining said jaws in operative position.

The combination with pivoted jaws each having a shank and a slotted pivot head whereby the jaws may be spaced substantially apart, of a flat spring having an end fixed to one shank and bearing against the head of the other shank and an adjustable handle on the first shank adapted to vary the tension of the spring.
5. The combination with pivoted jaws each having a shank and a slotted pivot head whereby the jaws may be spaced substantially apart, of a flat spring having an end fixed to ashank and bearing against the head of the other shank, screw threads on the end ot the first shank, and a threaded handle-sleeve on the first shank adapted to vary the tension of the spring.
