Be it known that LoUIs JUDELsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes yVVringers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clothes wringers. One object thereof is to provide in a device of the character described practical means for safeguarding the operator from injury.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a device of the character described, practical means for protecting the machine from injury when articles of greater bulk than the machine is designed to carry are inserted therein. i
A still further object is to provide a device of the character described which shall be efficient in operation to a high degree, of simple construction and comparatively cheap to manufacture.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction here inafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 is the machine frame consisting of the upright standards 1l, 11 secured in the base 12 and a cross member 13 normally secured at their upper ends. The standards 11, 114 carry lthe gearcasings 14, 14 in whichv are housed the pairs of gears 15, 15 and .16, 16. The` lower gears 15, 16 are supported on the y horizontal shaft 17 which in turn is journaled in bearings 18, 18 in the standards 11, 1l. The shaft 17 extends at one end 17a thereof into the transmission box 19 supported on the base 12, by any suitable means such as the bolts 19a. Supported above shaft 17 is the'upper shaft 20 journaled in a pair i 24, 24 supported in brackets 25, 25. The
bearing blocks 21, 21 are recessed as at 26, 2G to provide seats for the lower ends of the tension springs 27, 27. The upper ends 28, 28 of 'these springs are disposed in similar inverted recessed portions'29, 29 formed in the presser blocks 30, 30 at the ends of the tension bar or cross-member 31 and preferably formed integral therewith. For tensioning the rolls 22, 23 pressure is applied to the tension bar 31 by means of the hand wheel 32 having a threaded shank 32 extending through a lcentral opening 33 of the cross-member 13. v
Power means is provided for rotating the rolls 22, 23 and for reversing the direction of rotation thereof when desired. To this end a reversing power drive is provided for one of the shafts such as the lower shaft 17 comprising a pair of beveled gears 34, 34
mounted in opposed relation to each other and in operative relation to the gear 35 at right angles thereto. The lattery is driven by the power shaft 39 operated by anyl prime mover such as the electric `motor k40 (not shown).
A clutch 36 is provided for throwing either one of the gears 34, 34 into mesh with thedriving gear 35. This clutch is operated by a link member 37 pivotedto a horizontal arm 38 extending4 across the. wringer beneath the rollers. This arm 38 is` provided with an operating handle 38a and notches 38h, 38C, whereby the arm may be held in adjusted position, as will be readily understood. As will be clear from the drawing, when link member37 is in position A., bevel gear 34 is in mesh and shaft 17 will be driven in one direction, and when me l the link is in the position shown at C, the bevel gear 34 will be in mesh and the shaft driven in the opposite direction. link is in the neutral position B3 the shaft is at rest. 1
The means for separating the upper wringer roll 22 from the lower roll 23 will now be described. Straddling each end 13, 13b of the cross member 13 are the keepers 42, 42 preferably inverted U-shaped as shown in Fig. 4. tend downwardly over the cross member 13 and are pivotally secured as at 43, 43 to the standards 11, 11. A hand lever 44 is provided at the rear of the machine pivoted by means of a pin 44c to the cross member 13v` This hand lever carries a pair of link arms 45, 45 for connecting the keepers 42, 42 respectively thereto. The arm 45 is pivotally connected at one end as at 44t1 to the lower end of the lever 44, and is pivoted at the other end as at46 to the keeper 42. The arm 45 is pivotally secured to the lever 44 above the arm 45 as at 44" and at the other end to the keeper 42 as at 47.
The operation of the safety device for the separation of the rolls will now be clear. IVhen the lever 44'is in incline-d closed position (Figs. 1 and 3), the keepers 42, 42 straddle the cross member 13, thus holding the tension bar 31 down with the presser blocks 30, 30 thereof compressing the springs 27, 27. The wringer rolls are then in operative position and under proper tension as previously adjusted by the hand wheel. If the operator should get a hand caught between the rolls, he quickly strikes the hand lever 44 throwing it into open ver-v The link tical .position shown in Fig. 5. arms 45, 45 connected to the hand lever will then push outward on the keepers 42, 42 causing them to rotate out of holding position, thus releasing the presser bar 31 and cross member 13. The bearing blocks 21, 21 will then move upward together with the shaft 2O and the roll 23, thus quickly separate the rolls and free the hand. The rolls may then be rc-set for operation by turning the hand wheel 32 to release the tension setting, swinging the hand lever 44 down to simultaneously restore both keepers to their effective position, and then readj usting the tension applied to the rolls by turning said wheel 32 as will be readily `understood.
It will thus be seen that there is provided apparatus in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is Vlhen the The keepers 42, 42 ex-V well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire toi secure by Letters Patent r- 1. A wringer including a frame having supporting standards, a shaft journalled in said standards and carrying a wringing roller, a second shaft arranged above the. first shaft carrying a wringing roller, springs bearing on said second shaft, a tension bar extending between said standards and having its ends bearing on said springs, an upper cross-bar arranged between the standards and located above the tension bar, inverted U-shaped members pivotally connected to theupper ends of said standards and normally engaging the upper surface of the cross-bar, an operating handle pivotally connected intermediate its ends to said cross-bar, a link piv-otally connected to one end of said operating handle and having one of its ends pivotally connected to one of the U-shaped members, a second link having one of its ends pivotally connected to one of the U-shaped members, the other end of the second link being pivotally connected to the handle.
