Ghana Patented May 19, 1925.
UNITED STATES SIMON MORRISON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
VANITY CASE.
Application filed March 8, 1924.
To all whom if may concern:
Be it known that I. SIMON Monmsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn. in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to vanity cases and it is an object of the same to provide an improved and simplified construction thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a convenient device in connection with a vanity case for making brief memoranda as for shopping purposes.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a )art hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a perspective of my device in open position, and
Figure 2, a similar perspective with the parts in another position.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates the box or container which forms the lower member of the vanity case and which is adapted to have a compact located on the bottom thereof in ordinary manner or which may be used as a container for other things if preferred. A head is provided at 11 a little below the upper rim of the box, this bead serving to limit the downward movement of the cover member 12 hinged at 13 to the box. 'ithin the box and preferably below the head 11. a support 14 is provided which preferably bears against the bottom of the box at one edge and is Secured to the wall of the box by arivet 15. The support at its upper edge carries certain lugs )f a hinge 16 whereby an annulus 17 is pivotally connected to the box, the closure carrying lugs coacting with those first referred to for supporting the intle of the hinge. A coil spring 18 may e provided in conuection with the hinge for moving the closure toward open position in which case the flange 19 of the annulus by means of which a mirror 20 is held in place may be so formed as to fit closely within the upper margin of the box to hold the member 17 normally in closed position.
At the front side of the box farthest from the hinge 13 a detent 21 is provided, said detent being preferably formed in one piece or being secured to the free end of the member 14 which is made of resilient material Serial No. 697,840.
so that the lip of the lid can snap over and be held by the detent. A finger piece 2; is also formed integral with or secured to the forward end of member 14 and it will be obvious that by pressing on the finger piece the detent 21 is forced back to release the cover.
At the top or back of the closure consisting of the annulus 17 and the mirror 20 an open space is left at the rear of the mirror and in this I locate a sheet 24 of celluloid or other convenient material at the back of the mirror so as to be exposed by said open ing whereby the memoranda can be made with a pencil or the like on the exposed side of the celluloid. It will be understood that paper or slate or any other material on which marks can readily be made and erased can be substituted for celluloid. The opening is circular but a widened part 25 is preferably formed adjacent the hinge to strengthen the frame at this point and also to afford space for a legend such as Notes'- or the like.
It will be understood that a rouge compact or other toilet device may be supported in the cover 12 and that other toilet requisites may be substituted for the com act in container 10. Many other ad itions and changes in my device will be obvious to those skilled in the art and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification. but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a vanity case. a box having a cylindrical wall. a cover hinged to one side of the box, an arcuate support lying a ainst a part of said well, an annulus hinged to the support approximately 90 from said cover, and a mirror on said annulus, substantially as set forth.
2. In a vanity case, a cylindrical box, a cover for said box and an arcuate support secured internally of said box and having a mirror carried by said support said support having integral lugs at the upper edge of the su port near one end thereof to receive a pint e carried by said mirror and :1. lug at said ed e near the other end to hold the cover 0 the box closed, substantially as set forth.
3. A vanity case comprising a. box, a cover or said box, a support conforming throughout its length to the inner side wall of the box secured thereto. a mirror carried thereby, said support having one end forming an element of a hinge and having its other end formin a catch for the cover of the box, substantially as set forth.
4. A vanity case comprising a box, a cover hinged thereto. a support extending along the side wall of the box and secured thereto, one end of said support forming an element of a hinge for a mirror and the other end of said support having a resilient extension forming a detent for holding the cover of the box closed, substantially as set forth.
5. A vanity case comprising a box, a cover hinged thereto, a support secured within the box to the side wall thereof. one end of said support forming a pivoted support for a mirror and the other end of said support having a resilient extension forming a clefor a mirror one end of said supporting element forming a catch for the cover of the box, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Providence, R. I. this 5th day of March, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-four.
