Application filc June To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Founs'r W. Gimmes, e citizen of the United States, residing at Hobolzen, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a. certain new 1nd useful improvement in Locks for Brake Levers, of which the following is uspecification.
The invention relates to devices for locking the brake-lever of a motor vehicle with the broke mechanism in the set condition to prevent movement of ihe vehicle until the lever is unlocked to permit the brake to be again released, and the object of the inven tion is to provide a device cl t-his character which may lie easily applied. to the usual brake, mechanism without altering the letter, and which shall be simple in construction and operation and serve reliably. in preventing the movement or" the vehicle by unauthorized persons.
The invention consists in certain novel features end details of construction and arrange nent by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed. Q
The accompanying drawings form a. pert of this specification and show an approved form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of e brelrelever and its imnieclistely adjacent parts and connectio is, equipped with the improved locking means, and partly in vertical section.
Figure :2 is a corresponding side view.
Figure 3 is a plan view showing the brakelever sector and the locking-bolt bar alone.
Similar reference numerals indicate the some parts in all the figures. I
The brake-lever 5 is mounted on a stud 6 and carries a brake-rod '7 pivotally connected thereto MB and extendin to. the brake mechanism of the vehicle, not shown. The bral e-lever 5 also carries at its lower end a spring actuated pawl 9 operateclby therelease rod 10 and hand piece 11 pivoted to the handle 12 of the lever. The nose of the pawl engages in the notches between the teeth 13 ofa sector 14.- located below the stud 6 and fixedly secured to the chassis or' portion of the vehicle frame by bolts 15. All these parts may be as usual or of any approved construction and opercte in the usual manner.
li erallel with and alongside the sector 1e 2e, 1925;,Seriei 3:10. 570,739. Ecneweil ttcvember i, 19%. r
is e. curved bar 16 held by the same bolts and having it series of cavities l? in its upper face; spaced to correspond to the notches in the sector, and on the outer face or the lever 5 is along locking-bolt or rod 18 mounted to slide thereon in guides 19 and having a nose 20 adapted to engage either of the cavities 17 when presented in slinernent therewith. in accordance with the position of the pawl 9 and lever 5.
The upper end of the bolt 18 enters the casing 21 of a lock 22, the mechanism of which is not shown but may be understood to be of the Yale or other type. thebolt 22 being connected with the head .8 of the bolt 18, as shown in Figure 1, ahd the whole arranged to'lower or raise the bolt 18 into or outv of engagement with the cavities 17, and
when thus lowered to hold the bolt in such engagement until relehserl and lifted by the epplicetionof the etey to the lock.
By applying the brake strongly and hole leg the bolt 18 in the corresponding cavity, the vehicle cannot be moved until the bolt is again withdrawn and the lever freed.
. A light spring 28 may be employed to lift the bolt 18 and thus aid in theunlocks ing' operation.
It will be observed that the bar 16 is located below the floor 24 of the vehicle and concealed by the side thereof, as at 25,.so that the point of engagement of the bolt with its her is practically inaccessible and these parts are thus. "protected against the application of tools'or appliances for the purpose freeing the lever by attacks upon the bolt.
In u'device oi the character set forth. a pivotullv mounted 'brulz'e lever. a pawl pivot ally mounted thereon, c 't-oothed segment. a
member disposed parsllel therewith and having cavities corresponding to and arranged by the side lot sold teeth. said pawl being coooerable with said teeth, a locking rod move ly mounted on said lever for cooperation with said'cs-viticsg je loch. a member of which is connectetlrwitli said locking.
rod to throw it in one direction. and a spring acting on said rod to assist in its movement in the opposite direction.
In testimonv that I claim the invention above set forth I efix my sigmtture.
resesr w. GILlJETTE.
