Be it known that I, JOHN A. WHERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a collating device for typewriting machines of the kind disclosed in my.Patent No. 1,336,454, granted, April 13, 1920.
v In said patent, the collating table is provided with sheet-aligning and clamping members mounted thereon in superimposed relation, said members comprising sheet engaging portions and webs or flanges which extend through the table. Said members are nested together and, as a result, the webs or flanges, which may serve as edge gages, serve to position the work-sheets with the edges of the outside sheets overlapping those of the sheets nearer to the table.
, An object of the present invention is to provide, in connection with such clamping means, means on the front of the collating table for gaging a work-sheet, such as a ledger-sheet or record-sheet, lying next to the table, so that its edge will project beyond the edges of the overlying sheets, and to provide means for engaging the Worksheet along its exposed edge to hold the same against the platen.
Another object of the invention consists in providing means whereby the edges of the work-sheets may be gaged before being inserted far enough to contact with the flanges or webs,; such as shown in said patent.
A further object of the invention consists in so shaping the edges of the clamping members as to facilitate the insertion of work-sheets therebetween.
In carrying out the invention, provision may be made of a plate or table having a rearWardly-extending rib serving to space the plate from the front of the collating table, so as to permit the insertion between said plate and said table of the edge of a work-sheet, suchi as a record-sheet, said rib also serving as a side-edge gage for the Serial No. 453,594.
record-sheet. Provision may also be made of means to hold the record-sheet in position when so gaged. To this end, use may be made of a roll engaging the edge of the record-sheet and supported on the plate by any suitable means, such as a resilient finger.
In order to gage the edges of overlyin work-sheets so as to be in alignment wit each other and'to expose the edge of the record-sheet, provision may be made of abutments on the outer face of each clamping member against which the edge of a work-sheet is pressed, and the clamping member engaging the outer surface of the corresponding work-sheet may be recessed,

It should be understood that no necessity exists for beveling the edge of the outer clamping member, since the edge if beveled,in the same manner as the others, would not serve to guide the edge of a work-sheet between two adjacent clamping members. The beveled ends or edges may also be so arranged that, when the members are in clamping position, they will lie substantially in the same plane, so
' that, when one of the outer clamping memhers is released, the edges of the inner clamping members may serve as a continuous inclined surface to guide the edge of a work-sheet into the proper opening. When the clamping members are-released, the edge of each member projectsacross the plane of the beveled edge of the next lower member and forms therewith a throat which automatically uides the edge of the sheet as it slides up file lower bevels into the opening between the members.

'The platen 10 is mounted in the usual manner by means of an axle 11 in the end frames12 and 13 of the usual platen-frame. The platen-frame may be provided with the usual paper-table 14:, over which work-sheets ma be directed between the platen and rear an front feed-rolls 15 and 16, respectively, to the rinting line at the front of the platen, and w iere typing may be effected on said work-sheets by means of type-bars 17.
Mounted on the platen-frame is a collating table 18, standards 19 being struck from the material of the table at each of the side edges thereof and secured to the flanges at the upper edges of the frames 12 and 13 by suitable securing devices 20. The table 18 is provided with a pair of parallel elongated openings or slots 21, to receive webs or flanges 22, 23 and 24 of sheet-aligning and clamping members 25, 26 and 27, respectively. ()n the rear face of the collating table, adjacent each of the slots, an angular supporting member 28 is secured by any suitable means, said member having one web 29 lying against the rear face of the table and another web 30 extending at right angles therefrom. The web 30 is recessed as shown in Figure 4, and is providedwith a bar 31, extending across the recess, to which are attached ends of springs 32, secured at their other ends to the flanges 22, 23 and 24, to
draw the latter towards the collating table, to render the members 25, 26 and 27 effective for clamping the edges of work-sheets. Preferably, the springs 32 are connected with the bar 31 in such a manner as to enable their tension to be adjusted at will.
According to the present invention, provision is made, adjacent each oneof the slots 21, of a stationary plate or support 33, spaced at its outer edge from the collating table by means of a rib 34, to enable the edge of a work-sheet, such as a record-sheet a, to be inserted between the same and the collating table, and serving also'as a side-edge gage for such a sheet. Inasmuch as there IS no clamping action between the plate 33 and plate 33 may also be utilized as part of a clamp for the edge of another work-sheet b, and may be provided with a shoulder 37 to act as a sideedge gage. In order that the member 25 may be utilized to clamp the edge of a worksheet against the plate 33, provision may be made of a recess 38 on the inner face of said member 25, so that its inner edge may be carried rearwardly outside of the shoulder 37 to a clamping position. The sheet-aligning and clamping member 26 may be constructed in substantially the same form as member 25, and the inner face of the clamping member 27 may be given substantially the same shape as the inner faces of the members 25 and 26, but,- as no work-sheet is to be placed outside thereof, no necessity exists for a shoulder on its outer face, capable of serving as-a side-edge gage. As herein shown, the gaging shoulders on the plate 33 and the members 25 and 26 are positioned so as to lie in a plane perpendicular to the collating table 18, and will, therefore,
be effective to align the side edges of the work-sheets gaged thereby. In order to en.

The sheet-aligning and clamping members may be controlled in their movements to and from sheet-clamping positions in substantially the same manner as in said Patent No. 1,336,454. To guide the members 25, 26 and 27 in such movements which are at right angles to the table 18, provision is made of screws 41 which pass through slots 42 in the webs 22, 23 and 24 and are threaded into a portion 43 of the web 30 of 'each supporting member 28.
Mounted on each of the webs 29 of the angular supporting members 28, there is a series of slides 44, 45 and 46 guided for movements longitudinally of the webs, by means of screws 47 passing through slots 48 in the slides and threaded into webs 29. Pairs of cam rods or pins 49, 50 and 51 are secured to the slides 44, 45 and 46, respectively, and
extend transversely thereof into inclined slots 52, 53 and 54 of the webs 22, 23 and 24, respectively. 7
Upon downward movement of any one of said slides, as seen in Figure 4, the cam rods or pins thereon will be shifted in the inclined slots of the web of the corresponding sheet-aligning and clamping member, and move the latter away from the table 18 against the tension of the springs 32, con necting the same with the bar 31. In use, a record-sheet a may be introduced along the rear paper-table 14 between the platen 10 and the feed-rolls 15 and 16 and carried upwardly to the table 1'8, the edges of such sheet being introducedbetween the paper-table and the prtions of the plates 33 spaced therefrom, and the roll 36 carried by each of said plates acting to press the record-sheet against the platen to retain it in adjusted position. The inner handles 56 of one or both sets may then be drawn down to cause, in one or both, sets of aligning'and clamping members, the member 25 andjthe members 26 and 27 outside thereof to be shifted away from the table 18. Another sheet 6, introduced into the machine in the same manner as sheet a, may be inserted between the member 25 and the plate 33 of a set, its side edge being gaged by the shoulder 37 on the plate 33. When the work-sheet b is properly adjusted, the handles v56 may be returned totheir normal positions, thereby causing the edge of the work-sheet b to be clamped between the member 25 and the outer clamping surface of the plate 33.
In the same manner, other sheets 5 may be gaged and clamped between the members 25 and 26, and'26 and 27, by shifting the handles 57 and 58 backward and forward, as was done in connection with handle 58. It will be seen that, when the sheet-aligning and clamping member 26 is withdrawn from member 25, if the side edge of the work-sheet to be inserted therebetween is brought against the inclined surface at the inner end of member 25, it will be directed forwardly to enter the openingbetween the two members 25 and 26. Similarly, if the member 27 is withdrawn from the member 26, the edge of the work-sheet engaging the inclined surfaces of members 25 and 26 will be directed forwardly thereby, to enter the opening between said members 26 and 27, and, when roperly gaged by means of the shoulder. 3 on the member 26, may be clamped in adjusted position by returning the handle 58 to its normal position.
Although sets of clamping devices are shown near both edges of the table 18, it
may not be necessary to use both sets, inassheets I) are clamped, it may be shifted relaportion of member 33 which extends to the right from said gage 37 at Figure 3); and that a superposed combined sheet-clamping and gage member 25 is movable into and out of position in which it clamps said gaged sheet I), said member 25 itself having a shelf portion to support the edge portion of a second sheet when collated over sheet I), and the member 25 being also shouldered to serve as a gage for the side edge of the second sheet as it rests upon its said shelf portion. The device also preferably includes another superposed clamping andgaging-member 26-, also movable into and out of position in which it clamps the sheetcollated upon 25, this member 26 also having a shelf portion, as seen at Figure 3, which receives or supports the edge portion of a third work-sheet overlying the second; the member 26 being also shouldered for side-gaging the third sheet. There is also referably included a releasable clamp 27 or the third collated sheet.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the im rovements may be used without others.

1. A collating device including a table, and superimposed sheet-clamping and aligning members arranged on the sheet-guiding side of the table, and movable away therefrom, said members having their inner edges beveled so as to facilitate the insertion of the side edges of work-sheets.

and superimposed sheet-clamping and aligning members arranged on the sheet-guiding side of the table, each of said members being provided with a side-edge gage, the latter being so positioned in each case that the edgesof work-sheets ga -ed by the different members will be in substantial alignment.

and superimposed sheet-clamping and aligning members arranged on the sheet-guiding side of the table, said members having their inner edges beveledin such a manner that when the members are in clamping positions, the surfaces of the beveled portions will lie substantially in the same plane, so that when an opening is made between two adsheets.

.a flat surface to receive the edge portion of a. work-sheet and a shoulder for gaging the edgeof the work-sheet on said flat surface, and the outer one of which has a recess in the face opposite the flat surface to receive the shoulder on the other member, so that, said shoulders on the two members will lie substantially in a plane perpendicular to the table.
7 In a typewriting machine, in combination, a revoluble platen, acollating table and a side-edge gage device thereon comprising a plate having a rib to space the same from the table to permit-insertion of the edge of a work-sheet thereunder and a sideedge-gaging shoulder on its outer surface spaced inwardlv from said rib, so that a sheet gaged by said shoulder will ex ose the edge of the first-mentioned sheet w en gaged by said rib, and a roll supported on said plate so as to engage the exposededge of the firstmentioned sheet and press the same against the platen.
8. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a collating'table, a side-edge gage for a record-sheethaving a portion overlying the edge of said sheet and a shoulder on the upper side thereof to gage the side edge of another sheet to leave the edge of the record-sheet exposed, a roll to engage the exposed edge of the record-sheet and hold it against the platen, and a plurality of sheet-aligning and clam ing members above said gage, each of sai members being provided with means to align the side edge of a work-sheet thereon with that of said second-mentioned sheet.
9. In acollating device, in combination, a table, and a plurality-of sheet-aligning and clamping members, each having a clamping portion and a web perpendicular thereto, said members being nested together and having means to engage the edge of a work-sheet inserted between two adjacent members including an abutment on one of the members, the member at one side thereof being provided with a recess to receive said abutment, thereby preventing insertion of the sheet far enough to engage one of saidwebs.
10. In a collating device, in combination, a table, and a plurality of sheet-aligning and clamping members, each having a clamping portion and a web perpendicular thereto, said members being nested together and having means to engage the edge of a work-sheet inserted between two adjacent members including an abutment on one of the members, the member at one side thereof being provided with a recess to receive said abutment, 'thereby preventing insertion of the sheet far enough to engage one of said webs, and certain of said members having their edges beveled to facilitate insertion of work-sheets, the beveling bein such that the edges of said members will 1e substantially in the same plane when the members are in clamping positions.
11. A collating device including a table, and superimposed sheet-clamping and alignin members arranged on the sheet-guiding slde of the table, one member of each pair of adjacent members having a side-edgeg'aging device projecting therefrom, and the other member of the pair being so shaped and a web perpendicular thereto, sai mem-' as to receive said device.
12. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a collating table, a sideedge gage for a record-sheet having a portion overlyin the edge, of said sheet and a shoulder on t e upper side thereof to gage the side edge of another sheet to leave the edge of the record-sheet exposed, a roll to engage the exposed edge of therecord-sheet and hold it against the glaten, and a plurality of sheet-aligning an clamping members above said gage-for use with outer worksheets overlying said record-sheet, each of said members having a clamping ortion bers being nested together with said webs extending throu h a slot in said table outside of said si e-edge gage, and having means to gage the positions of the sheets inserted therebetween, so as to expose a. suflicient margin'of the record-sheet, to prevent interference with the outer sheets by said roll.
13. A collating device including a table, and superimposed clamping and aligning members arranged on the sheet-guiding side of the table, and movable away therefrom, adjacent members having their inner edges beveled in the same direction to facilitate the insertion of the side edges of worksheets between adjacent members.
14. A collating device including a table and superimposed sheet-clamping and aligning members arranged on the sheet-guiding side of the table, each of said members, against the outer side of which a work-sheet is clamped, being provided with a side-edge gage extending outwardly therefrom, said side-edge gages being so positioned that the side edges of the work-sheets gaged by the different members will be in substantial alignment.
15. A collating device comprising a table, a support spaced from the sheet-guiding side of the table so as to permit a work-sheet to be moved freely therebetween and having a side-edge gage extendin rearwardly to the table so as to gage the si e edge of the worksheet inserted between the table and the support, and a clamp to hold a work-sheet stationary on said support while the worksheet on the table is being shifted.
16. A collating device comprising a table, a support spaced from the sheet-guiding side of the table so as to permit a work-sheet to be moved loosely therebetween, said support having a side-edge gage extending rearwardly to the table so as to gage the side edge of the work-sheet-inserted between the table and the su port, and a second sideedge gage exten ing forwardly therefrom to gage a second work-sheet, and a clamp to hold a-work-sheet stationary on said support while the work-sheet on the table is being shifted.
17 A collating device including a main paper-table to receive a record-sheet, a narrow support overlying the main paper-table at one side and spaced therefrom just sufliciently to permit free movement of a side margin of the record-sheet, means to gage said side margin of the record-sheet, and a plurality of superimposed clamping members to clamp work-sheets inserted therebetween and between an inner clamping memher and the support to hold the same stationary while the record-sheet is being shifted between the table and the support.
18. A collatin device includlng a table and superimpose sheet-clamping and aligning members arranged on the sheet-guidmg side of the table and movable away therebeveled edge of the next lower member and forming a throat therewith to'guide the side edges of work-sheets between such clamping members. v
19. In a collating device, a clamping. member having a support at its outer'edge and provided with an inner clamping face and a side-edge gage on its outer face spaced from said support.
20. In a collating device, a clamping member having a support at its outer edge and provided with a clam ing face, and with a side-edge gage space from said suport. p 21. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a collating device including a stationary sheet-support provided with a side-edge gage for a work-sheet, and a superposed combined clamping and gage member movable into and out of a position in which it clamps said sheet, said clamping and gage member having a shelf 'portion to support the edge portion of a second sheet.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a collating device including a stationary sheet-support provided with a side-edge gage for a work-sheet, a superposed combined clamping and gage member movable into and out of a position in which it clamps said sheet, said clamping and gage member having a shelf portion to suport the edge portion of a second sheet overying the first sheet, and having a shoulder for gaging the side edge of said second a stationary sheet-support provided with a side-edge gage for a work-sheet, a superposed combined clamping and gage member movable into and out of a position in which it clamps said sheet, said clamping and gage member having a shelf portion to support the edge portion of a second sheet overlying the first sheet, and having a shoulder for gaging the side edge of said second worksheet as it rests upon said shelf, a second clam mg and gage member superposed over the rst clamping and gage -member and also movable into and out of sheet-clamping position, and also having a shelf portion to receive the edge portion of a third worksheet overlying the second, and also having a shoulder for gagin the side ed e of the third work-sheet on its said shelf ortion, a rlid a releasable clamp forsaid third works1 eet.
