RUBBISI- INCINERATOR.
Application iiled August 2, 1923. Serial No. 655,208.
To all whom t may 'concer/a.'
Be it known that l, HARRY B. BonNsiDn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frovidence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode island, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rubbish lncinerators, of `which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of incinerators commonly known as rubbish burners.
The essential objects of my invention are collapsibility. standardization of parts, facility of assembling and disassembling of parts, portability, strength and inexpensiveness.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
One form of incinerator embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying" drawings which form a part of this specifiication wherein,
n Figure 1 is a perspective view of the incinerator,
Figure 2, a full section of the same on line 2 2 of Figure l,
Figure 3, a 'fragmentary section on line 3 3 of Figure l with the cover elevated,
Figure 4, a plan view of the side units in interenpjagement,
Figure 5.` a section of the side units on line 5 5 of Figure 1,
Figure 6, a section of the incinerator on line 6 6 of Figure 1, showing part of the floor broken away,
Figures 7 and 8, sections on line 7 7 and 8 8 respectively of Figures 3 and 2, and
Figure 9, a perspective detail view of one of the sides or sections.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
The invention will be described in connection with the specific embodiment shown. and it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to such speciiic showing except for such limitations as the claims impart.
In the present embodiment of my invention herein shown the assemblage of parts may comprise in a general way four interengageable body units or sections 11, 12, 13 and 14 wholly of metal, and of such similar construction that a description of one will serve for all. Each unit, as herein shown, is downwardly tapering, but if desired may be of rectangular contour. Each, as shown in Figure 9, consists of a frame 16 havinga lone; top 17, sides 18 and 19 inclined inwardly in a downward direction, and al short bottoni 20. rthe portion 2O preferably has a slight inclination as itrecedes from the side 19. The side 13 is, therefore, slightly shorter than the side 19.v @ne end of the side 19 is extended to form a depending leg 21. As the frame is constructed of angle iron, it comprises a peripheral rim 22 and an inturned peripheral flange 23. The opening of the frame is filled with a series of flat metallic horizontal and vertical strips 26 and 27 interwoven with each other whose ends are spot welded or otherwise fastened to the rim 22. These strips form the body of the unit. Adjacent the side 19 in each section 11, 12. and 13 are fused to certain of the strips 26 of the body, cleats 29. Similarly located in the section 14 are latches. Each latch consists of an oblong rectangular plate 31 pivoted near one end on a rivet fast inL the frame body and having' its free portion 34 preferably offset or inclined. intermediate the length of the plate 31, intepgral, with its upper edge, is a lip 35.
A floor or base 38 consists of a rectangular frame 39 to which are welded the ends of flat metal interwoven horizontal and transverse metal strips 40 and 41. i
il. cover 45 is provided comprising, a rectangular frame 46 formed of angle iron to form a peripheral rim 47 and down-turned flange 48. The opening of the frame is .illed with horizontally and transversely disposed interwoven metal strips 49 and 50, as shown in Figures l and 3, having their ends fused to the rim 47. These constitute the body of the cover. A handle '52 has an arched central portion, and attaching ears 54 fused to the central portion of the cover body.
In assembling the described elements the sides of the sections 11, 12, 13 are successively attached by telescoping the side of one unit within the adjacent side of the next unit kwith the cleats 29 frictionally embracing' the flange 23 of the side of the adjacent unit. The position of an individual cleat relatively to the flange is shown in Figure 8. The section 14 is finally engaged, having one of its sides embraced by a side of the section 13, and embracing in turn with its other side one side of the section 11,
The enclosed side fiange 23 of the section 14C is engaged by the cleats 29 of the section 13; but, as shown in Figures 3 and 7, the section ll, embraced by the other side flange 23 of the section 14., is engaged by the latches 3l which are downwardly swung on their pivots 33 to embrace the flange 23 of the section 11. The latch lips 35 limit the downward travel of the latches, by overlapping the adjacent strips 26. The successive overlapping, by the flange at one side of a section, of the flange and rim on the adjacent side of the next engaged section of the series of' sections, is shown in Figure 4. The overlapping of the successive ends of the flanges of the bottoms 20 is shown in Figure 6.
After the sections are thus interengaged the floor section or plate 38 is dropped upon and is supported by the flanges of the parts 20 of the body sections, as shown in the last mentioned ligure.
The rim 47 of the cover is adapted to rest upon the flanges of the tops 17 of the body sections, and the flange 48 of the cover is adapted to embrace the rims of the body tops 17 and is removable by the handle 52.
I claim:`
As a new article of manufacture, a sec tion for a rubbish incinerator comprising a top, bottom, a long side, a short side, a depending extension on the long side, a peripheral flange projecting from the top, bottom, and sides, and a metallic body fast to the top, bottom, and sides.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
HARRY B. BORNSIDE.
