lhis invention relates to box or crate forming machin/aait being the primary object ot the invention to provide means for clamping, the ends and partitions ot a boi; or crate to support the saine inupright positions so that theA side members ot the boi: or crate may be secured to the end sections or partitions with facility.
A further object of the invention, is to provide a" device oit this character which may be controlled and operated by toot levers, thereby enabling the operator to have unlimited use or', hishands to acconjiplish the nailing operation.
A still further object oi' the invention is the provision of means tor automatically locking the clamping members in their clamping positions, thus eliminating the necessity of the operator manually locking the clamping elements. j I

Referring to the drawings inv detail the` machine includes a base including front and rear bars 5 and 6 respectively and'side bars 7, to which. are secured the uprights 8andj9, and the angularly disposed; brace bars 10 which-have their lower ends-connected to the side bars 7', the upper ends thereof being secured tothe `urpjrights 9 to brace the saine againstrearward movement. y
The bars 8A are connected adjacent the upper ends thereof` as by means et the transversely extending beam 11,l the beam. 11` forming a table with the uprights S and 9 to support the box sections thereon.

Ain important feature otthe inventionlies in the construction ot the clamping elements, which include the relatively long pivoted arms 17 pivotally connected to thetrame as at 18, the outer or free ends thereot' being inturned as at 19 to provide a spring jaw 20, there being provided an adjusting screw 21 passing through one portion ot each arm, and having its end contacting with the spring jaw 20, whereby `movement of the adjusting screw 21 producing a relative movement of the spring jaw to cause the same to move toward and away from the bar 12 associated therewith.
Operating between the arms 17 are the jaws which are supported indirectly by the arms 1i as by means ot' the plates 23 tov the table ESQ j which have hinged connection with the a-ws 22 as by means of the plates 24, the connection between the plates 23 and 24 being made by the hinges 25, there being provided a hinged connection 26 between the jaws 22, which hinged connection 26 also provides means for connecting the operating rod 2T to the jaws 22 so that the jaws and arms -may be operated simultaneously.
A foot lever 28 has one end connected to the rear of the frame, the forward end thereof extending beyond the plane of the front wall ot' the machine as at 29 to provide a foot contacting means, whereby the rod 27 may be operated by movement of the lever 28.
Connected to the 'foot lever 28 is a coiled spring 8O which has one extremity anchored to the frame to assist in moving the foot lever 28 to its upper or unlocking position, when the toot lever has been released by the operator. It is to be understood however that the connection between the operating rod 2'4" and jaws is such as to move the plates which connect the rod 27 and jaws 22 to a position below a direct horizontal line, whereby the jaws 22 are automatically locked and held into position with thel seetions clamped thereby.
Disposed under the foot lever' 28 is a lever 3l which has an otiset portion 32 contacting with the lower surface. of the foot lever 28 so that movement of the lever 28 to its lower or locking position causes the lever 8l to move to its upper position. lt will thus be seen that when the lever 3l is in its upper position, movement of the lever to its lower position, or to a position as indicated by Figure 4e of the drawings, moves the foot lever 28 to its upper or unlocked position to release the sections of the box or crate clamped by the machine. Thus it will be obvious that the lever 31 may be employed in place of the spring 30 should it be desired to move the arms gradually to their unlocked positions.
In the modilied form of the invention as illustrated by Figures 5 to 9 inclusive, a novel form of clamping jaw is shown, and
in these figures the central clamping jaws have been omitted, the machine being especially designed for box making.
lVith reference to Figures 5 to 9 inclusive oil the drawings, the arms 38 are substantially the same as the arms 17, the connection between the arms being a pair of hingedly connected plates and 85, which have connection with the operating` rod 3G as at 37. ln Figure 8 of the drawings, the arms are shown as in their clamping positions, and it will be seen that when the arms are urther moved, as by the operation of the rod 86, the plates 35 take positions as illustrated by Figure 9, whereupon the plates 35 are moved below a direct horizontal line, with the result that the arms 38 are locked into their clamping positions.
In the operation of the device, end sections as illustrated by Figure 2 of thc drawings, and designated by the reference chai'- acter 40, are positioned between the. bars l2 and aws 20, the central or partitioning section being disposed between the jaws lt is obvious that upon movement of the foot lever 28 to its lower position, thc jaws are brought into clamping relation with each other to clamp the sections in their upright positions, whereby the side boards ot' the bonY may be easily secured thereto.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A box forming machine including a frame, arms having pivotal connection with the frame and having jaws at their outer ends, aws mounted betwen the arms, hinge members for connecting the jaws mounted between the arms, and means having connection with the hinge members for moving the arms and jaws mounted between the arms simultaneously.
