Be it :known that I, Fmmols R. Hos rn'r- HER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and ,Stateof Indian-a, have im e-nted certain new and useful improvements in Governor Mechdmislnsfor internal-Combustion Engines of whieh the following is .a specification.
This invention pertains to an improved and novel governing mechanism for internal combustion engines, and while it may be neadily utilized in connection with various types of combustion engines it is especially adapted for use in connection with Fordson tractors.
The prime object of the invention is .to provide simple, durable, economical and thonoughly eflici-en-t :centrifuga'lly operated means for operating the throttle valve of an internal I combustion engine.
further-object of the inyen t-ion is to so construct, locate and combine the novel operating parts of this governing device as to insure the proper and safe operation .of the throttle with respect to the speed of the engine.

, y appear from the ensuing description are accomplished by the construction, arrangesment, combination and location of the parts hereinafter more fully described; illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, it being understood that slight changes in the preciseform, proportions and minor details of construction may be readily resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the embodiment of this invention as illustrated, the numeral 1 indicates the upper section of the governor casing and 2 the lower section thereof, and fitted within the central portion of said casing are a :series of bronze bushings 4 and 5 respectively, f-onrning bearings for a shaft 6 centrally supported within the casing, said shaft having fixedly secured to its lowermost ,end va steel bevel gear wheel 7, adapted to engage (and mesh with a similar bevel gear wheel 8 fixedly :secured to one end ortion of a Fordson cam shaft 9, as clear y shown [in 1.
Suitably secured :to the upper end of section 1 of the casing is a standard Fordson commutator 1-0 to the inner face .of which is fixedly secured the contacts 11. The upper threaded end of the shaft 6 projects vertically through the upper end of section ,1, and is provided with a sleeve 12 having a lateral extension 13 to which extension is suitably supported .a roller 14 adapted to engage the inner face of the contacts, as the shaft 6 is caused to rotate, said sleeve 12 being retained in its proper position by :the securing nut 12. Fixedly secured to the shaft 6 within the ccasiingwith its lower face resting in contact with the roller :tlirust bearing 15 is a bracket casting 1.6 to which casting is pivotally secured at 17, a plurality of weights or balls 18 adapted to normally rest in contact with the recessed portion 19 formed around the lower end portion of said casting.

It will be seen thatascrew-threaded' pin 41, which is pressed through an opening formed throughthe-springplate 352, is provided withia suitablethumb 'nut 42, where by proper tension may be provided in order to regulate the" desired resistance of the 1 throttle cont-rolling lever with relation to the action of the governor weights. lt' will be perceived that the section 2 of the casing isprovided with an opening 43 "formed 'therethrough for the reception of ==-,'fs'uitable" bolts :for fixedly securing the "governor mechanism to the engine block.

It will be understood that the roller thrust bearlng 25 is adapted to carry the load of the working parts of the governor which'is' caused bythe tensi'onon the'spring plate32 which rests against the'lever 33and-by tightening the tensionon the spring causes the engine to run faster while'releasing't-he tension on said spring permits the engine to run slower thus when the engine falls below speed, the weights will fall, and with a a spring tension acting "against the weights,
saidweights will move downward, which action opens the throttle enough to revive the speed, to the speed required, since as the weights rise it causes the throttle to :close, and as theweights' drop the throttle is caused to open. Hence, it will be readily V evident, that my improved governor mechanism is readily "adapted toregulate the 'speed'fso that with the slightest variation inthe load it will open or close 'the throttle.

A device of the character described, rotatable shaft mounted in bearings within the casing, a slotted slidable sleeve mounted on said shaft and formed with an outwardly and downwardly extended member having a curved recess formed in its lower face at its outer edge, a bracket casting disposed below said sleeve formed with an annular recess in its outer face, centrifugally operated weights secured to said casting, a loose slidable collar disposed above said sleeve formed with a plurality of lateral extensions at its top portion, a horizontal shaft mounted through the casing, eccentric arms fixedly secured to said horizontal shaft and engaging with said extensions, and a throttle operating lever secured to one end of the horizontal shaft. A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a rotatable shaft mounted within the casing, a bracket casting fixedly secured to said shaft, centrifugally operated weights pivotally connected to the casting, a slotted slidable sleeve mounted in the shaft positioned above said casting having an outwardly and downwardly extended member formed with a curved recess in its lower face at its outer edge for the reception of said weights, a loose slidable collar formed with a plurality of lateral extensions, a horizontal shaft mounted through the casing, eccentric arms fixedly secured to the horizontal shaft and engaging said extensions, and a throttle operating lever secured to one end of the horizontal shaft.

A governor mechanism of the character described, comprising a casing, a rotatable shaft mounted within the casing, a bracket casting fixedly secured to the shaft with its lower face in contact with a roller bearing, centrifugally operated weights pivoted'to the casting, a slidable sleeve mounted on the shaft disposed above the casting and formed with an outwardly and downwardly extended member having a curved recess formed in its lower face near its outer edge, a loose slidable sleeve disposed above said member with its lower face in contact with a thrust roller bearing and formed with a plurality of late :11 extensions, a horizontal shaft mounted through the casing, eccentric arms engaging with said extensions and fixedly secured to the horizontal shaft, a throttle controlling lever secured to one end of the said horizontal. shaft, and a tensioned adjusting device fixedly secured to the outside of the casing with its free end resting in contact with said lever.
