BARREL-HANDLING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, FRANK E. SWANSON,
l a citizen of the United States, residing at Maple Plain, in the county of Hennepin and State ofMinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-I-IandlingDevices; and I do hereby declarev the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a device. for
handling barrels or similar containers.
Barrels and barrel-like containers are now:
barrel which can be brought into engagement with the barrel and secured thereto merely by tilting the barrel.
It is afurther object of the invention to provide such a device mounted upon a wheeled frame open at one end and comprising spaced longitudinal members which can be moved atieach side of the barrelto bring the device into operative relation thereto.
It is still another object of the invention to provide such a frame as above mentioned having mounted thereon means for gripping and supporting the barrel, together with means: for swinging said. means to simultaneously elevate and tilt thebarrel.
These. and other objects and advantages of the-invention will be fully set forth in the-following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different views, and inwhich, V 1

Referring to the drawings, -the device comprises a *wheeled frame havingspaced longitudinalmembe'rs 1 which, in the" embodiment of the invention illustrated, are
shown as made of angle bars, and as having secured adjacenttheir ends, caster wheels 2 and 3, the latter of which are arranged for swivelling movement. The members 1 are connected adjacent one end by one or more transverse bars 4 but are free or unconnected at their opposite ends. Rising from each of the members 1 are spaced uprights 5 and 6, the latter being of greater height than the former and said uprights being connected by an inclined bar 7. The bars .7 have secured thereto adjacent their lower ends or formed integrally therewith, rack members 8, 0n the lower end of which extends upwardly, astop member 9. In the embodiment ofthe invention illustrated,,the members 8 and 9 are shown as formed on a separate piece connected to the members 5 and 7 by suitable bolts or screws. cradle member 10 is provided which is of considerable width at its central portion but tapered toward its ends Which arerounded to form hubs. Adjacent its central portion, the yoke 10'isprovided with spaced flanges 11 apertured to receive oppositely extending clampingrods" 12 having hooks at their outer ends adapted to engage over the ends of the barrel or container and being threaded at their inner ends andprovided with suitable nuts engaging the inner sides of the flanges 11. The ends of the yoke 10areprovided with squared apertures adapted to receive a squared shaft or bolt 13 held in place by a suitablehead and nut. Mounted on each shaft 13 is a pinion 14 suitably apertured torec eive'the shaft so as torotate therewith. At one side of the device, a geared segment 15 is mounted upon the outer end of shaft 13 to turn'therewith. segment 15 has its toothed portion eccentric tothe shaft 13 and this toothed portion is engaged by a pinion16 mounted upon the A. yoke or i The squared portion of a headed and nutted bolt and project forwardly from the members 6. The squared portion of shaft 17 also has fitted thereon the hub of a handle-equipped crank 18 by which the shaft and pinion 16 are turned. The pinion 16 is held in any desired position by the double-toothed pawl 19 pivotally mounted upon one of the handles 20. The outer end of the other shaft 13 has a hub portion 1'3 thereon at the outer side of pinion 14.
In operation, the device will normally be in the position shown in Fig. 2. When in such position, the frame is grasped by the handles 20 and moved adjacent thecontainer (6 sotha-t the sides 1 and the yoke 10 embra-ce the same. The container is now tilted slightly and the rods 12 hooked over the ends thereof and tightened thereon byturning the nuts on the ends of said rods. The barrel or container is thus embraced and engaged by the yoke 10 and gripped by the rods 12. The pawl 19 is now moved out 01 engagement with the pinion 16 and the crank 18 turned in a clock-wise direction. This turning movement of the crank turns pinion 16 and through the same, turns the segment 15. As the segment 15 turns, the pinions 14 are turned therewith and moved up the racks 8. This movement of the pinions 14 on theracks 8 moves the segment 15 toward the pinion 16 so that even though the radius of the segment decreases, the teeth thereon are kept "in constant engagement with the pinion 16. The turning movement of the segment 15 swings the yoke 10 and rods 12 'so that the barrel is tilted and the movement of the pinions 14 up'the racks 8 simultaneously elevates the barrel so. that the bottom edge thereof clears the floor in its swinging movement. Continued turning of the crank 18 brings'the barrel or container to the position shown in Fig. 1. The device canbe held in'this position by engagement of the pawl1'9 with the pinion 16. The barrel can be transported to any position with the container in the position shown in Fig. 1, or as soon as the container has been lifted from the floor.
In Fig. 5 a modification of part of applicants device is shown. The portion corresponding to members 7. as shown inthe other views, is replaced by bars 21 and 22, the bars 21 being substantially horizontal. A quadrant 23 is used which is a concentric instead of an eccentric, which meshes .with the gear 24, which gear is similar in all re spects to the gear 14. The gear-24 is operated by the crank 25 and is supported in the standards 26 similar to the standards 6 shown in the other figures. The quadrant is fixed to an eccentric 28 which carries a square shaft 27 secured in the yoke 10. In place of the gear meshing with the rack at the center of the quadrants, the eccentric 28 rotates in a s-trap29, it of course. being uning a shaft secured in the yoke 10.
derstood that there will be an eccentric 21 and strap 29 at each side of the machine just as there are gears '14 at each side in the other figures, the eccentric at the side of the machine opposite the quadrant 23 also carry- The straps 29 are secured to the bars 21.
The operation of the modification shown in Fig. 5 will be similar to that already described, except that the eccentrics 28 will merely rotate on a stationary axis and will thus swing and lift the barrel, since the shaft 27 is both rotated, moved longitudinally and raised.
Fromthe "above description it is seen that applicant has provided a very simple and efiicient device for handling =a'barrel or like container. The barrel or container is engaged in the device without-bodily lifting the same "and the container is simultaneously elevated and swung to any desired position. The parts of the device arefew and simple and can be ruggedly made sothat there will be little chance of the same becoming disarranged.
Tt will, of course, be understood, that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement andproportions of the parts without departing from the scope of applicants invention, which, generally stated; consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects'above stated and such as shown and describedand set forth in'the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A barrel handling device having in combination, a yoke adapted to embrace the barrel adjacent the center-thereof, means connected to said yoke clamping the ends of said barrel, said yokehaving supports at each side thereof,'a frame, ecce'ntricmembers carried by said frame in which said supports are carried, a gear segment secured to one of said members, a pinion journaled on said frame engaging said segment,'and means for turning said pinion to raise and swing said yoke, clamping means and barrel.
2. A barrel handling device comprising a wheeled frame having longitudinal side members spaced to pass at each side of a barrel, barrel embracing and clamping means carried by saidframe in position to be engaged with said barrel when the latter is tilted, revoluble eccentric means on said frame in which said first mentioned means is carried,-gearing including a crank operated member for rotating said eccentric means to simultaneously lift and swing said barrel, whereby it can be transported or its contents dispensed.
3. A device for handling a barrel or 'similar container comprising spaced longitudinally extending horizontal members, spaced vertical membersupstanding from each of said horizontal members. a cradle for cmmeans embracing the barrel adjacent the center thereof, means carried by saidmeans for clamping the ends of the barrel. an eccentrlc by which said first mentioned means is supported, and means engaging and turning said eccentric simultaneously to raise said barrel and swing the same about a transverse axis.
5. A device for handling a barrel or similar container having in combination, an arcuate band adapted to embrace the central portion of the barrel, clamping members extending from said band engaging the ends ofthe barrel, eccentric members at the opposite ends of said band, a supporting frame on which said eccentric members rest, and crank means for turning said eccentric members whereby the barrel is simultaneously lifted and swung on a transverse axis.
