the n MORRIS POSES, 0F BROOKLYN, AND MORRIS LUBAB'I, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
'connrsa nrsrnar case.
Application filed June 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Morons Poses and MORRIS Lunanr, citizens of the United States of America, residing, respectively, at Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, U. S. A., and New York city, county of New York, State of New York, U. S. 13., have invented new and useful Improvements in Counter Display Cases, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in sheet metal receptacles used for shipping and displaying cigars or other tobacco products.
Small retail stocks of cigars are not efficiently handled and displayed without protecting them in a humidor cabinet of some type, and in shops where the space allotted to the sale of tobacco products is very limited the merchant is not always able to include a humidor among other fixtures. To place open boxes of cigars on a counter is not desirable because constant exposure causes the tobacco to becomedry and unsalable.
With the foregoing in mind it is the purpose of the present invention to provide a small display receptacle for cigars, which may be cheaply manufactured of sheet metal and provided with glass covers through which the contents are visible, and which is further provided with means for retaining the proper amount of moisture within the receptacle.
The invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improved receptacle and Figure 2 is a substantially sectional View of the same.
Referring to the drawings 10 designates the upright sheet metal sides of the receptacle, the upper edges thereof being turned back upon themselves to provide smooth edges. The bottom edges of the walls are turned outwardly at right angles to the plane of the sides to form flanges 11 adapted to contact with the margin of a bottom member 12, comprising two layers 13 and 14 of sheet metal having a layer 15 of card board or similar material interposed therebetween. The bottom member 12 is attached to the flanges 11 by means of U-shaped bars 16 having their parallel arms clamped against the flanges and under surface of the bottom. The bottom 12 is further provided 124. Serial No. 722,637.
at the rear upper end of the cover 18, one
arm thereof being disposed at its edges under the flanges of the frame 19 between the latter and the glass. The other arm is held in a substantially upright position and may contain such advertising material as may be necessary to describe the contents of the receptacle. A bar 22 of metal is soldered at its ends to the side members of the frame 19 and the mid portion is adapted to hold the anglepiece 21 in position.
A rest or support 23 is attached to the bottom wall 11 and comprises an inverted angular piece projecting transversely across the interior of the box, the angle of the piece abutting the rear wall and the ends of the sides restand are soldered to the plate 13. The support 23 is used to support the cigars or a container 2% at an inclination as shown in Figure 2.
Moisture is supplied from a member 25 comprising a metal backing 26 having a curved screen front portion 27 and an interior pocket to receive cotton or other absorbent 28. The member 25 is suspended 011 hooks 29 which form the parallel end portions of an inverted U-shaped wire 30 which is soldered or otherwise permanently attached to the upper edge of the back wall 10 of the receptacle.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A receptacle of the character described, having upright walls whose lower edges flange outward, a bottom coniprising layers of sheet metal and an interposed cardboard layer, the edges of said bottom conforming with the edges of the flanges, and channel pieces tightly embracing said flanges and the edges of the bottom to hold the sides and bottom together.
2. In a receptacle of the character described, the combination with a hinged cover for the open end, said cover comprising a transparent pane, a frame therefor composed of channel pieces around three sides, the fourth piece being composed of an L-shaped length and disposed along the hinged edge, of an angle piece disposed along the hinged edge of the cover and having one flange superposed on the pane with the ends disposed between the upper flange of the frame and the pane at opposite sides, the other flange of the angle piece being disposed in upright position with respeot to the plane of the cover, and a flat strip of material turned over on itself along 10 its longitudinal axis and attached at the ends to the frame to hold the pane and angle piece in position.
In testimony whereof We have aflixed our signatures.
v Mourns POSES.
MORRIS LUBART.
