UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MELVILLE M. GRANT, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, AS SIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO L. OSCAR FRANTZ, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO.
GRAPPLE.
Application filed July 25, 1924. Serial No. 728,159.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVILLE M. GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Grapple, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grapples for lifting and transporting various articles and has for its principal object to provide a simple and efficient device which may be easily operated for attaching the grapple to or removing the same from an object or article.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grapple of the above mentioned character, wherein a pair of cooperating levers is provided, the same being of such construction as to form a means for facilitating the securing and holding of the grapple on the article for preventing the accidental disengagement of the article from the grapple while the same is being handled.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a grapple of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this in vention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my im proved grapple, and
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved grapple and the same comprises cooperating lovers 2 and 3 respectively. Extending laterally and inwardly from the lower edges of the levers are the article engaging hooks l.
The upper ends of the levers terminate in the inwardly disposed arms 5 and 6 respectively, the arm 5 being of greater length than the arm 6 and further terminating in a downwardly extending portion 7. Each of the cooperating arms taper gradually toward their free ends for providing handle portions to facilitate the handling of the grapple in the manner hereinafter to be more fully described. The arm 5 of the lever 2 is furthermore inclined downward than the arm 6 of the lever 3 as is clearly illustrated in Figure 1.
Provided in the arm 5 of the lever 2 in the thicker portion thereof are the spaced openings 8, the purpose thereof is to pro vide a means for receiving the pivotal bolt 9 which extends through a suitable opening provided in the free end of the arm 6 of the lever 3 whereby the arms are pivotally secured together. The bolt 9 is adapted to extend through any one of the openings 8 in the arm 5 for increasing or decreasing the distance between the levers 2 and 3 as may be desired. It is of course understood that the free end of the arm 6 and the arm 5 of the lever 2 will overlap in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure 2.
The free end of the arm 5 will cooperate with the arm 6 in providing the handle for grasping the grapple when the same is in use. The grapple can be efficiently used as a pair of ice tongs and by pushing downwardly on the arms of the levers, the same will be separated so as to permit the hooks a to engage the block of ice and by grasping the'handles formed by the arms and pulling the same upwardly, the hooks will be held in secure engagement with the block of ice so as to enable the same to be carried witlr out any danger of the grapple becoming disengaged therefrom.
The simplicity in which my improved grapple is constructed enables the parts to be readily adjusted as may be necessary to accommodate various sizes of articles to be carried and transported and furthermore the grapple will be positive and efficient in use.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the in vention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A grapple of the type specified comprising a pair of arms provided at the corresponding ends with hooks to engage the object to be grasped, the upper end of each arm being directed laterally to provide handles, one of said handles being disposed. at portion of the, acutely disposed. handle to an approximate right. angle to the. compledispose the. hand gripping portion in dimental portion, the other handle being disvergent relation and on a plane below said 10 posed at an approximate acute anode to its r'wht angular handle.
complemental portion, the free en of the in testimony whereof I afii-x my signature. right angular handle being pivotally and adjustably connected to the intermediate. 7 MELVILLE M. GRANT.
