Be it known that we, FRANK HEDLEY and JAMES S. Dormi, both citizens or the United States, and resident-s, respectively, ot Yonkers and Mount Vernon, county ot lVestchester, State of New York, have made a certain new and useful invention in Coinbined Multiple-Unit Car-Door Control Signaling and Announcing System, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined multiple unit car door control signaling' and announcing system for trains of cars.
rl`he' object of the inv ntion is to provide a combined multiple unit car door control signaling and announcing system for trains of cars which is simple and efficient.
A 'further object is to provide a combined control signaling an'd announcing system of the nature referred to which will enable a single attendant at a control point or station to control the movements ot' all the doors ot the train and of each car ot the train and to announce the stations or other information, instructions or directions to passengers in each car of the train.
A further object is to secure economy in the operation of subway, elevatedl and other railway systems, without sacrificing anything ol safety of operation, by placing thedoors of, and street or st-ation announcements tor, all the cars of the train under the control of a single attendant.
Other objects of the invention will appear more 'fully hereinafter. Y
rihe invention consists substantially in theV construction, combination, location and relative arrangement of parts and circuit connections, all as will be more fully hereinafter set iorth, as shown in the accompanying drawn-lgs and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

lVe have shown the door controlling. the signaling andV the announcing circuit arrangements in separate views merely lor' clearness of illustrationand to avoid the confusion and vcomplexity incident to Vshowing them in the same view, but it is to be understood that in the' practical application ot' our invention the various circuit arrangements are all tor'be employed on each car of the train. f l
Referring first, to Figs. l and la, showing the door control part of the system, 'ity is to be assumed that the station' or point of control of the doors, signal and announcing devices is to be located at A.y This station may be at any convenient or desired point on any carot a train of cars. Inl practice where a tra-in ot ten cars, for example, is to be operated aconvenient control point or station will be at the adjacent ends of the li'fth and sixth cars of the train, that is, at
the mid-length point of the train.l At this station are located four series of contacts under the control of a lsingle attendant, two ot the' series respectively controlling circuits required for the 'door opening `and closing operations for all the cars at one side of the control station, and the other two series ot cont-acts performing the same function for all the cars at the other side of the control station. In the case 'of a ten car train each group of five cars'will require five tra-in'wires for controlling the closing movements of the doors and tive tor controlling the opening movements of the doors on one side ot the cars,` whereV separate opening and closing magnets are employed lor controlling the door operating motors. For convenience and simplicity of illustration only the circuits concerned inthe door operations on one side of the cars is shown. rThe operation will'now be clear.r When thetrain arrives at a station the attendant atthe control point or station will successivcly, or in'V any desired order, or simultaneously, close the-contacts 20, 21, 22, 23,V
24, to the current supply conductor 25. For example, suppose contact is closed. Thereupon circuit is completed from con. ductor to train wire 14 through magnet 32 to ground at 36. The resulting energizartion of magnet 32'causes switch device 34 Vto close. Thereupon circuits are completed switch 35 to close and hence causing car circuits tobe completed from current supply wire 25 through the door'motor closing magnets 31 .toground at 40, and hence causing allthe doors on that carto simultaneously close. Inlike manner, the closing Vof the contact 16at the control station will energize the closing o'trthe circuit of relay maghet on the next car, resulting inthe same operation takingplace on that car, and so on throughout the entire group o1' cars.

lf desired, and in order to secure safety ofoperation auxiliary switches indicatedat 45, 46, may, be respectively associated in auxiliary circuits 47, 48, through the opening and closing magnets 30, 31, and these switches 45, 46, may be automatically controll'ed in any desired manner. For exg ample the switch may be closed automatically -when a door, in closing, encounters an obstruction iii the manner illustratedior example in our copending application Serial No. 596071, filed June 17, 1921, or in accordance with the electric control disclosed in VPatent No. 1,300,781, April 15,

In our present application the auxiliary circuit through the opening magnet 30 of that door is completed and rcauses the actuating motor to open the door, thereby averting accident or injury to a passenger who might be in the path yof the closing movement of the door. In similar manner the switch 46 may be operated i in case it is desired to close the door by hand in advance or independently of theclosing action of the motor which eiects the closingmovements o1a that door. In such case an auxiliary. circuit through the closing magnet 31 will be l'closed and hence the motor vwill be operated inL closing direction to complete the closing movement of the door. Any desired or known type of automatic switchas the automatic switch (29 or 30) of Patent No; 1,300,781 to Rowntree may be used `for the auxiliary .switches 45 and 46. Y
In a contro] system above described it is desirable that the attendant at the control station as well as the motorman at the front end of the train be kept informed whether or not any door throughout the train is open so that proper precaution be taken to avoid accident or injury through the premature starting of the train by the motoimaii, as
well as to call attention oi the control attendant to any oversight or neglect in manipulating a control contact. Such a signal or indicating arrangement is particularly desirable and necessary in conjunction with the control system above described.
VIn Figs. 2, 2, we have shown a simple and L e'licient signal system consisting of a train wire 50, plugged in to trolley, battery, or i other current source 51, at, say the rear end of the train or group of cars, as indicated at 52. On each car is located a relay magnet 53, which when energized closesa switch 54 in the train line wire 50. It the magnets 53 on all the cars are energized the switches 54 will'be closed throughoutr the train .to close a circuit through the inotornians signal device 55, such as aV lamp, for example, and the lighting up or flashing of this lamp .will indicate to the motormaii that it is safe to proceed, andv he should not start the train till .he receives the signal. lVhen the circuit ot magnet 53 is broken a switch device 56 isV closed. This device is arranged in the car circuit 57 of' signal devices such as lamps 58 situated in convenient positions on the car, tobe observed or seen by the attendant at the control station. The switch device 56 also closes a car circuit 59. This circuit in,- cludes in series therein ,door switches indi: cated at 60, and also the ,niagnet'5-l. The door switches 60 are adapted to `be closed only when their respective doors are closed, so that if any door on any car is open the circuit of magnet 53 on that car is open, the switch on that car is open, and the switch on that car is closed, and consequently the signal devices 5S are flashed, and the motormans signal device 55 is out of action. lVhen all the doors on the train are closed the circuits of the magnets 53 are completed, thereby closing the switches 54 and opening switches 56. This closes 4the motormans signal circuit and opens the car signal circuits, and hence it is safe to proceed with the train.
In order that the attendant at the control station may announce stations, or give directions or instructions to passengers in the remote cars under his control, we provide a loud speaking telephone system consisting` of train circuits 61, 62, and car circuits. In the car circuits 63, 64, are switches 65, 66. In the circuits 63, 64, on each car is connected a telephone transmitter 67 and a loud speaking telephone receiver 68. A switch 69 is arranged to connect each car circuit 64 tothe train wire 62. A battery 7() and primary 7l of a transformer are arranged in the circuit of the transmitter 67 on each car. Connected across the car circuit 64 and the train circuit 61 on each car is the secondary of the transformer 7l on that car. The loud speaking telephones 68 are connected across the line circuits 6l, 62.
The operation of the announcing` system is as follows, assuming the control station to be located at A, Fig. 3. The attendant will close the switches 65, 66 and 69, and willV talk into the transmitter 67, making the desired announcement. This will cause variations in current flow in the circuit containing` the telephone 67, the battery 76, and the primary of the transformer 7l, resulting in corresponding telephonic currents being set up in the circuit of the secondary of the transformer 71. nected across wires 64, 6l, and the switch 69 being closed, the telephonie currents will be supplied to all the loud speaking telephones 68 which are connected across the train wires 61, 62, in parallel, and henceV will deliver the message to the various cars ofthe group.
An announcing system similar to that above described is shown in Figs. 4 and 4a, except that two transmitters are shown at each end of each car either one of which may be en'iployed by the attendant.
A combined door control signal and announcing system of the nature above de,- scribed enables trains of any desired number of cars, say up to ten, to be operated safely and without loss of time by only two attendants, the motorman and the one to efect the desired control operations, thus accomplishing an enormous savingl of ex- This secondary being con pense and economy in salaries or wages, over present methods of train operation.
Many modifications and changes in detail will readily occur to those skilled in the art wlithout departing from the spirit and scope of our invention as defined in the claims. Having set forth therefore the objects and nature of our invention and having shown and described a system illustrative of the principles thereof, what We claim as new and useful and of our own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In an electrically controlled multiple unit car door control system, and in combination with the cars of a train and electrically controlled devices for controlling the opening and closing movements of the doors of each car of said train, a circuit for each of said devices, means located at one point in the train for selectively controlling the circuit of all of said devices, additional circuits and means for causing said devices to function independently of the main circuit.
2. In electrically controlled announcing, signaling, and multiple unit cardoor 'control systems, and in combination With the cars of a train, an electrically controlled device for controlling the opening movemen'ts of all of the doors on a car, a circuit for controlling said device, and means for controlling said circuit. y
