SATCHEL.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN B. NELLEGAR, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Satchels,'of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a satchel or handbag and more particularly to a satchel or hand-bag adapted for carrying valuables such as bonds, money, jewels, etc.

The transmission of valuables, such as is frequently necessary by bank messengers, bond clerks, etc, entails considerable risk because of the possibility of robbery and, consequently, it is important to construct the container in which the valuables are to be carried in such a manner that it will be difficult for a robber to gain access to the valuables in the container except through the expenditure of considerable time. Robberies of this character ordinarily must be conducted with great dispatch and any difficulties placed in the path of the robber which must be overcome by him and which are time consuming, might result in a frustration of the attempted robbery and, hence, are very advantageous.

The ordinary satchel or hand-bag cannot be used successfully for this purpose as it can readily be cut open with an ordinary knife and thus easy access obtained to the valuables contained therein. Similarly. a metallic case is not satisfactory because it is unsightly, very conspicuous and, due to its metallic construction, would be quite noisy and hence impractical.

It is one of the objects of this invention, therefore, to provide an improved satchel or bag for carrying valuables which is equipped with means to make it exceedingly difficult for the robber to gain access to the valuables.

Another object of the invention resides in the production of an improved satchel or hand-bag fitted with an interior casing, which casing is provided with a cover of flexible material, such as cloth or leather, the cover assuming the shape of the ordinary and commercial hand-bag.

A further object of the invention resides H in the production of a combination bag comprised of the inner casing and the outer bag covering in which the inner casing is fitted with means which can be readily extended through an opening in the outer bag, whereby the inner casing can be locked and secured to the wrist or arm of the individual carrying the bag.

Other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description, the accompanying illustrations and the appended claims.

For the purpose of description, a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;

Fig. 1 illustrates a view in perspective of the satchel or bag in its closed position and'in which the means used to secure the metallic casing, in the bag, to the individual 1earryirrg; said bag is positioned inside of the Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the interior metallic casing; and

Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View of the satchel or bag which illustrates the bag in its open position, the metallic casing in its open position and the means used for securing the metallic casing to the hand of the individual carrying the bag, extending through said bag to the exterior of said bag.

As is clearly illustrated in the'drawing, the combination satchel or hand-bag consists of an exterior bag made of any flexible material, preferably leather and which is constructed in the ordinary form given to commercial bagsof this character, being fitted with handles 5 and corner reinforcements such as 6. Access to the interior of the bag is obtained through the covers 7 and 8 hinged respectively at 9 and 10. These covers, 7 and 8,. when moved to the closed position, as indicated in Fig. 1, are locked in this position by any suitable lock such as 11. Enclosed within the bag 4 is the inner casing 12. This inner casing 12 is preferably made of a size so that it will snugly fit inside of the outer bag l as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 8. The inner casing is preferably made of steel and is fitted with a cover 13 provided with a lock 14, which look serves to seal and permanently close this casing after the valuables have been placed therein. The inner casing 12 is preferably made of steel but, obviously can be made of any material which cannot readily be cut with a-knife, such for example, as fibre, vulcanite, hard rubber,

metallically reinforced leather, metallic screening, and the like.

The cover 13 may be secured to the metallic casing in any suitable manner but is preferably attached by hinges, such as 15, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. Secured to the non-movable portion 16 of the cover 13 is an eyebolt 17. This eye-bolt may be secured to the cover 16 in any suitable manner, such as by riveting, welding, or it may be made integrally therewith. The rivet .17 serves to receive and secure to the cover 16 a chain 18 to the end of which is secured any suitable type of hand-cuff such as 19. The chain 18 and the hand-cuff 19 secured to the cover 16 can be extended to the eX- terior of the outer bag 4 through an open ing 20 cut into the cover 8 of said bag. This opening 20 is ordinarily covered and closed by a flap 21 whereby, when the chain 18 is disposed inside of the bag i, the flap 21 will cover the opening 20, and to all e2: ternal appearances the bag at will be similar to any of the ordinary types of commercial bags or Satchels.

The metallic casing 12 is secured in the outer bag or satchel at in any suitable manner and this is preferably accomplished, as illustrated in. Fig. 3, by means of rivets which secure the bottom of the steel casin 22 to the bottom 23 of the bag 4.

The improved combination bag hereinbefore described is used in the following manner:

Whenever it is desired to transport valuables from one building to another the bag, as herein described, is used as follows:

The outer bag t is first opened after which the inner metallic casing 12 is opened by raising the cover 13, the valuables are then placed within the casing 12 after which the cover 13 is closed and locked through the medium of the lock 14. Following this, the chain 18, with the attached hand-cuff 19, is passed through the opening 20 in the cover 8. The outer bag is then closed and lockedv by means of the lock 11. The individual who is going to carry the satchel or bag then secures the hand-cuff 19 to his wrist after which he is ready to start. iWhen the valuables have been delivered and the bag is to be carried back empty the individual carrying the bag will thrust the chain 18 back through the opening 20 of the outer bagi and w'll then carry the combination bag in the ordinary way and to all external appearances there will be no evidence that the is of any special character.

The invention hereinbetore described is obviously not limited to the specific embodiment thereof, herein illustrated and described, but is capable of alterations and modifications within its spirit and scope as set forth in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described in combination with a satchel constructed of flexible material and provided with a handle and a lock, of a metallic receptacle for valuables snugly fitted in said satchel provided with. a cover and lock, said receptacle carrying an eye-bolt rigidily secured thereto, a chain fitted in said eye-bolt and an opening in said satchel through which said chain may be projected.

2. In a device of the character described in combination with a satchel constructed of flexible material and provided with a handle and a lock, of a metallic receptacle for valuables snugly fitted in said satchel provided with a cover and lock, said receptacle having an eye-bolt rigidly secured thereto, a chain litted in said eye-bolt, an opening in said sa chel through which said chain may be projected and a hand-cuff attached to said chain whereby said metallic receptacle can be secured to external objects.

3. In a device of the character described the combination with a satchel, of a reccptacle for valuables enclosed within said satchel, said receptacle being provided. with closure means to prevent access to the valuables, means secured to said receptacle which may be passed through an opening in said satchel whereby the receptacle may be locked toexternal objects, and a flap adapted to cover the opening in said satchel when the aforesaid means is disposed within said satchel.
