Application filed. August 15, 1924. Serial No. 732,288.V
Be it li'nown that I, DE livrer Tarpon InoN, a citizen ofthe United States,- and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook',I and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilating Devices, of 'which the following is a full, clear, and enactdescription.
My invention relates to improvement-s in ventilating devices, and it consists inthe combinations, constructions,- and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an adjustable ventilator of the so-called mushroom type' b-ut Which is an improvement over that set forth in my p-rior United States Patent No. 1,425,028 of August 8,
The device Whichv forms the subject o-f the present application isdesigne'd like that of thc priorpatent aforesaid to be used primarily in Veonnectioi'r With theatreventilation, the device' being"V disposed underneath the seatsof the theatre.
An object of the present invention is-to provide a ventilator which has a greater ventilating opening tha'nlthat set forth in my prior patent, but `at the same time vmay be placed on, and will oper-"ate effectively on a platform or tier of no greater Width than that occupied by the device set forth in the patent. In other Words., the present invention is designed to afford greater facility for ventilation Without taking up a correspondingly greater space.
A. further object of my invention is to provide a ventilator of an oblong shape which has means for permitting the adjustment of the device to permit more or less air to enter.
A further object of my invention is to provide a Ventilating device of the type described having relatively few parts, and being provided with means for adjustment which render such adjustment comparatively easy.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention Will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in Which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device,
Figure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Figurel 1,- lcolring in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure Bis an end view of the device.
In carrying ont my' invention I provide Van oblong hollow casting 1, substantially ofY elliptical ferm having rounded end portions. This casting forms a Wall and has an integral flange 2 near the'b'ottom thereof arranged. to rest on the Afloor 3,= the lat-ter being provided with an (opening 4 forthe admission of the loiver portion of the ycasting 1. Extending ears or lugs 5 are providedv for securing the casting to the Hoor, these ears or lugs being provided With suitable openings for screws or bolts.
@n the' exterior of the casting 1 is a series of integral finger-like ridges 6', separated by spaces. The' spaces 7 it will be observed are closed at one end by an integral Vconneet-ing member 8 from ivhich the fingers-6' a=t-11. Itwvill be observed that it consists f of a cover having a dished or concave-shape. The cover extends over the edge of the casting 1 and is turned down slightly. It is provided With integral legs or supports 12 which have ribs 13 on their inner sides, these ribs being sepa-rated by spaces 14.
The rounded end portions of the casting are made on arcs having their centers at the intersection of the major and minor axes of the device.
From the foregoing description of the various part-s of the device, the operation there- 0f may be readily understood. It has been found in the ventilation of large buildings, such as theatres or the like, that to secure the best results, frequent adjustment of the ventilator is desirable. The present device fulfills the requirements of a ventilator Whichis easily adjustable. Consider Figure 3 of the drawing. I-Iere a ventilator is shown open. If it is desired to partially close it, the cover portion 11 is rotated until the ridges 13 which are supported by the ridges 6 and 9 pass beyond the ends of these ridges, when the cover may be lowered bodico Y accidental displacement.
ily until the ridges 18 engage the next longer ridge 6, when the rotation of the device can be reversed so as to bring the cover into its normal position, but now resting on a ridge which is lower, i. e., nearer the floor. This will of course tend to partially close the opening betsveen the cover and the upper end of the casting. Similarly the cover may be lowered'so that its supports will rest on anyof the :ridges 6, these, as shown in the drawing, being successively longer toward the bottom.
The purpose of having the lower ridges successively longer is so that the ridges ron the legs may be broughtinto instant registration. If the ridges 6 were all of the same length, the cover would drop down to the bottom when it had cleared therupper ridges 6. Where each ridge is progressively longer, it drops down onto the next ridge and is in immediate registrati-on with the ridges on the exterior of the device at this level.
YYIn the construction described, the threading of the main casting which was necessary in the device shown in the prior patent is obviated. A greater' area Yfor. ventilation is securedV with a givenV width, which width need only be Vthe minor dimension of the device. Aft-er the desired position is reached, the cover may be locked in position by means of the set screw 15 so as to prevent I claim:
1.'A Ventilating device comprising an oblong wall of substantially elliptical shape, a plurality of supporting members carried by said wall on the exterior thereof, said members being progressively longer from top to bottom of said wall, and a lcover portion having legsY arranged to fit over said wall and provided with means for engaging any of said supporting members lfor holding said cover in predetermined relation with respect to the top of the wall.
2. A Ventilating device comprising an oblong hollow casting having rounded ends, a series of parallel ridges disposed on the outside of the casting, said ridges being progressively longer toward the bottom of the device, a cover, and supports for said' cover having means arranged to rest 0n any of said ridges for supporting said cover at predetermined positions with respect to the top edge of the casting. Y
3. A Ventilating device comprising an elongated hollow casting of substantially elliptical shape having a series of integral parallel'ridges, said ridges being progres sively longer from `to-p to botto-m of the casting, a cover having a plurality of legs, each of said legs being provided with ridges arranged to engage the ridges osaid cover and being shiftable to`- engage other ridges, whereby the cover may be suppgorted at varying distances 'from the top of Vthe casting. Y. l v
4. A Ventilating device comprising an elongated hollow casting of substantially elliptical shape having aseiies of integral parallel ridges, said ridges being progressively longer from top to bottom of the casting, a cover having aplurality of legs, each of said legs being provided with ridges arranged to engage the ridges of said cover andibeing shiftable to engage other ridges,
whereby the cover may be supported at varying distances from thetop of the cast ing, and means for locking `the cover in its shifted position. Y
