Application filed October 2, 1322. Serial No. 591 889.
To all whom it may concern: surface elements into the space between the Be it known that 1, Oscar: A. BERMAN, a firstnamed conductive parts, the present incitizen of the United. States, residing at 2-24. vcntion is directed to an improvement East 8th Street, Cincinnati, State of ()hio, whereby the area of th cooperating surface have invented certain new and useful lmelements is not altered while the distance provements in the litanutacture of {Jonbetween cooperating electricelements or densers, of which the following is a specicooperating elements and dielectric elements .tication, i is varied.
This invention relates to improvements For the purpose of illustrating the appa- 1 inthe manufacture or condensers, and ratus the condenser is shown to be mounted ticularly to condensers which can be so on a support l, which may consist ofa suit in'radio apparatus. 1 able insulating member, as, for instance, it is an object of the invention to pro wood or a composition as it is "frequently vide a condenser whose capacity can be use: in instruments of this character, and 70 varied in an extremely simple way through which may, "for instance, be the closure or the variation 01" the distance between parts top member of a box in which other parts of the condenser or of the pressure with of an instrument (not shown) are arranged. whichpartsof the condenser act on each other. One of the conductive surface elements of It is also an object of the invention to the condenser, shown here in the form of a 7 2 provide a condenser in which movement is disc 2, having an opening 3, is secured in imparted to one or more of the elements a suitable way to one surface of the supof the condenser in a direction towards or port, as, for instance, by cementing a disc away from otherv parts thereof in order to of tin foil to said support. The disc 2 survary their distance or the pressure with rounds a perforation l, which extends 80 which these parts are in engagement with through the entire thickness of the support. each other so as to alter the capacity or" the The plate 3, which in the present case is condenser. shown to be made of tin foil, is covered by The invention also has the object of pro a dielectric member 5 made of mica or some viding a simple mechanism through which other insulating composition, and this di- 530 one of the conductive plates may be moved electric element 5 also is shown in'the form positively towards or away from the adjaof a disc having a central opening 6 in regcent dielectric member without, however, inistration with the central opening 3 of the terrupting the conduction oi current to or first mentioned electric surface elements and from the electric element in question. in axial alinement with the opening i. A as With these and other objects in view, an second electric surface element 7, made of embodiment of the invention is illustrated relatively strong conductive material, as, in the accompanying drawing by way of for instance, a sheet of phosphor bronze or example and is described in the following the like, also is concentrically arranged with specification. respect to the other parts of thecondenser. as In the drawing: This companion electric member 7 has a Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a panel small central opening through which er;- showing a portion of the condenser; tends the spindle or screw 8 projecting from Fig. 2 is a side elevation or edge view the rear of the companion electric member of a condenser composed of two electric and secured thereto, for instance, by means 45 surface elements and one dielectric member, of a nut which may be fixedly connected by and solder or the like with the projecting end Fig; 3 is a sectional view through the of the spindle 8 and also with the rear surcondenser showing the mechanism for movface of the disc 7 ing one of the parts relatively to the others. That. nd of th s rew spindle 8 which 50 Fig. 4 1s a rear view of the condenser is connected with the nut 9 is in permanent mounted on a panel. contact with the free end of a conductor 10,
lVhile it is known in the art of varying as, for instance, a spring made of phosphor the capacity of condensers to space electric lronze or some other suitable conductive surface elements of the condenser from each material, the other end of this spring of other, using air as a dielectric and to inphosphor bronze being united with the sort portions of variable area of conductive panel or support 1, and the point of attachment servii'ig at the'saine time as a fastening means for a binding post 11.
The screw spindle 8 projects through the registering openings 3, at of the two other surface elements 2, 5 of the condenser without contacting the same and the support 1 is provided with a nut 12 which is rigidly secured in place within the support 1. Any desired means may he used to hold the nut 12 against rotary or axial displacement, as, for instance, a pin 13 and a flange i l. The screw spindle S furthermore is provided on thc'side or the support 1 opposite to that on which the condenser is located with a "knob 15 rigidlyconnected therewith, whereby upon rotation of the knob a rotary movement is imparted to the screw; and as this vscrewuezrte'nd s through the nut 12 in the support of the condenser, an axial more ment is transmitted to the electric plate '7 thereby altering the distance of the electric elei'nents .2 and T, or oi the dielectric Jneu'iher 5 and the plate 7 from each other. It is ohvious, therefore, that upon manipulation of the screw spindle also the pressure with which one of the electric members is forced towards the other electric or dielectric memher is altered, and that in accordance with this pressure also therapacity of the entire condenser may be Varied.
I claim:
In an electrical condenser an insulating' support, a metal disc secured thereto so as to he engaged over its whole area with the support, an insulating disc, a nut'iizied in said support, a screw in engagement with said nut, extending through the support, the metal. disc and the insulating disc without contacting therewith and having a handle rigidly'connected thereto at its upper end, a second metal disc rigidly fastened to said screw adjacent its lower end, a binding post on said support and a'spring secured to the binding post and yiel dingly pressing against the lower end of the screw acting at the same time as electrical connection and uecuring the screw against accidental rotation.
In witness whereof I Ell'llX my signature.
OSCAR ADOLPl-IUS BEBMADJ.
