UNITED STATES HERMAN ZIMMERMAN, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHEAR GUIDE.
Application filed February 9, 1924. Serial No. 691,770.
T0 all ali/1,0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HERMAN Zini/mr.- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shear Guide, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in shear guides, and more particularly to a guide constituting a straight edge, which insures straight cutting of a piece of cloth and the like by a pair of shears or other suitable cutting device which is moved through the guide.
An object of the invention is, therefore, to provide a guide which prevents loss due vto crooked or irregular cuttinO', which facilitates the cutting action, and which also functions to insure the cloth being cut in uniform lengths, as the pieces when cut are disposed one above the other.
A further object is to provide a device of the character stated which may be removably secured to any ordinary cutting table, and which when not desired for use can be removed so as not to interfere with the ordinary functions of the table.
In cutting cloth into lengths with ordinary means, considerable loss is caused by irregular cutting as it is diflicult to insure a straight cut with ordinary shears and considerable time is consumed in placing the uncut cloth and holding the same to measure the cloth for the next cut', and it is the purpose of my invention to provide a device which greatly facilitates this operation and insures a uniform cutting action.
lVith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and` pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating my improved device ,in operative position on a cutting table;
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure3 is a broken plan view of my improved device in position on the table;
Figure l is a fragmentary view in section on the line 4--1 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is ay perspective view of one end of the guide bar; i
Figure 6 is a perspective of the guide bar holding clamp. 1 represents a cutting table and 2 is my improved guide bar positioned above the table and over which a strip of cloth 3 is fed from a bolt fl. 5 represents a clamp or weight which is positioned on the pile of cut lengths and receives the end of the strip 3 so that when the cut is made along the bar 2 the length will be precisely like those already cut. The bar 2 may be of any desired width, is sufficiently rigid for its purpose, and is provided adjacent one edge with a pair of beads 6 constituting guide flanges at opposite sides of a groove 7 The groove 7 is of suliicient width to constitute a guide for a shear blade 8 and the like so that the shears can be moved through the guide and operated to cut the cloth in a perfectly straight line. The bar 2 is provided at one end with a depending normally vertical arm 9 which is positioned through alined slots 10 in a clamp 11. This clamp 11 is of angular shape so that its upper and lower members are positioned above and below the table 1, respectively, and a` set screw 12 is projected through the lower member of the clamp and engages the bottom of the table to secure the clamp thereto. A second setscrew 13 is projected through the intermediate or vertical portion of the clamp 11 and engages the arm 9 to clamp the guide bar 2 in any position of vertical adjustment.
In operation, the cloth 3 is fed from the bolt 4 across the bar 2, and the end of the cloth is positioned under the clamp or weight 5. The operator then moves the shears through the guide groove 7 cutting the cloth in an absolutely straight line and the exact length of the cloth previously cut. When one length is cut the cloth is again drawn off the bolt and placed under the clamp or 'Weight 5 and then cut, and this operation is repeated until the pile accumulates, when the bar 2 is adjusted vertically and the pile of cut lengths placed under the same. The bar 2 is then secured at this adjustment by means of the screw 13 and the operation above described is repeated.
Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my to secure the bar at the desired vertical adjustment.
Q. A Shear guide7 comprising :L straight bar having a shear guiding groove thereon7 an angular clamp having a pair of aligned openings'therein, L set screw in the elzunp adapted to secure the same to a table, a depending arm on one end of the bar mova-ble inthe openings of the clamp, and n second set screw :in the clamp engaging the arm.
