V. VOLLBRACHT DOME DAMPER Filed April 19, 1923 nienfam l l'cfor Vol/brackf.
Patented Mar. 31, 1925.
UNITED STATES,
VICTOR- voLLBRAcHT, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
DOME DAMPER,
Application filed April 19,
.7 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Vroron VOLLBRAOHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of WVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a. certain new and useful Improvement in Dome Dampers; and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to dome dampers and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for opening or closing the cove of the dome damper. The dome damper is intended for use in the throat of a chimney over a fireplace where it'is difficult to raise or lower the lid of the damper but with this construction the lid of the damper may be opened or closed and adjusted between the open and closed position by a crank extending from the face of the chimney. Another object of the inven-' tion is to provide a means whereby the cover of the dome damper may be adjusted in position from the exterior of the fireplace. A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device of the character described which is composed of few parts and is of consequent cheap construction. These objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully 'described and claimed and the preferred form of construction by which these objects are attained is shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a dome damper showing my improved regulating mechanism mounted therein.
Fig. 2 is a section through the dome damper.
As shown in Fig. 1 the dome damper is provided with a flange 1. which is adapted to be secured in the brick work of a chimney with which it is to be used. Formed integrally with the flange 1 is a rectangular frame 2 forming a throat through which the smoke and fumes may pass upwardly through the chimney. The frame 2 is provided with apertured lugs 3 and 4 in which a pair of pins 5 and '6 are rotat-ably mounted. These pins 5 and 6 are secured to the cover 7 for the dome damper and provide pivots for the said cover. A shaft 8 is journaled in the sides of the frame 2 and is provided 1923. Serial No; 833,041.
with a crank 9' on the end thereof for rotion in the chimney with the shaft 8 ex tending through the facing thereof. The crank 9 is then secured to the extending end of the shaft 8 and by rotating the crank the cam 10 is rotated in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1, which due to its en- A cam 10 is secured to the shaftv gageme-nt with the lug 13 raises the cover 7 of the dome damper. The periphery of the cam 0r eccentric 10 is provided with rounded notches or corrugations 12 which are engaged by the lug 13 in passing thereover and the lug 13 is adapted to rest in one of thenotches when the cover 7 is opened to any particular adjustment. When the cam is given a. half turn from the position shown in Fig. 1 the cover 7 is in the closed position and the lug 13 is positioned over the low portion 1 1 of the cam 10. With this 1 construction by turning the crank 9 the lid 7 may be readily opened or closed or secured at any point between the open and the closed positions.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device is very simple and efficient in operation, will not easily get out of order, is composed of few parts and is of consequent low manufacturing cost and provides a device which accomplishes the objects described.
Having thus fully described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat-.
entof the United States is 1. A dome damper comprising a frame providing a throat, a damper hinged to the frame and closing the throat, a lug formed integrally with the damper, a shaft journaled in the sides of the frame, a crankfor rotating the shaft, and a cam secured to the shaft within the throat, the periphery of the cam being provided with corrugations in which the said lug is adapted to engage.
2. A dome damper comprising a frame providing a throat, a damper hinged to the frame and closing the throat, a lug on the said damper, a shaft journaledin the sides of the frame, a crank for rotating the shaft, and a cam secured to the shaft and having a notched face engaging the lug of the damp er at the periphery.
3. A dome damper comprising a frame having a damper hinged to one side of the frame and adapted to be raised or lowered to open or close the throat, a shaft mounted in the frame extending across the throat, an
said eccentric being notched or corrugated to an extent sufficient to prevent accidental relative movement of the lug and cam.-
In testimony whereof, I sign this specifi- V cation.
VICTOR VOLLBRAOHT.
