Be it known that I, LOUIS J. Gnovns, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplex Strainers, of which the following'l is a specification.
My presentinvention relates'to: improvelf; ments in duplex strainers, anapparatus for removing sediment and' impurities ingenf eral from fluids or liquidssuch as fuel oil, boiler feed-water, etc., and which, whenone strainer basket becomes clogged or l5 fouled, permits the putting into service of the other clean strainer basket, and the removal for cleaning of the clogged strainer basket, without interrupting the flow of fluid through the pipe line`,.being useful zo in continuous processes involving straining of uid where it is impracticable, inconvenient, or costly to interrupt the flow of fluid through the pipe. l i
My invention resides more particularly in the valve, and valve control or actuating mechanism of the strainer. Heretofore, in devices of this` type, there were required to control the valves two or more threaded operative members, one-for the :1G inlet valves and one for the outlet valves; whereas, I, inthis invention, control both the inlet and outlet valves by a single threaded operative member, and control' them substantially simultaneously. This simplifies and facilitates control and oper* ation of the valves, and thereby the use of the strainer in general. For, inasmuch as each threaded Operative member requires a hand wheel or other suitable, actuating means, and I, in this, invention, having only one threaded operative member, and, therefore, only one hand wheel or actuating means, and all previous devices of this type having two or more threaded operai tive members, and, therefore, two lor more hand wheels or other actuating means, and, as the simplicity of handling one hand wheel as compared with the handling of two or more simultaneously is evident, the improvements embodied in my invention will be apparent.
Again, heretofore, in devices of this type, much trouble has been experienced by the wearing of the valve and valve seats, caused by the valves sliding onY their-` seats under pressure. Another feature vof ythis inventionr consists of eliminating this 'wear' .by means of inclined surfaces, to be described more fully in detaill later, whereby, in opening the inlet and outlet ports of either of the strainer chambers the single common inlet valve and the'outlet valvewith which it is engaged are caused to be forced in a direction away from each otherand from their seats, after which the 'pressure being equalized on both sides ofthe valves, the common inlet valve, which inthe device is the Ionly sliding valve, can -travel forward without wearing or grinding its seat. v- Theseland other features `and capabilities of my invention will be disclosed in "zov the course ,of the following description of the invention.

The strainer body 10 is a casting having formed therein the strainer chambers yl5 which preferably are cylindrical. The strainer body 10 is 'provided with inlet ports 16, an inlet port for each strainer chamber,
these inlet'ports being controlled alternata ly by the singleconmion inlet valve 12 `and outlet ports 1 7, an outlet port foreach strainer, each one of these outlet ports being by passagevvays 18, and between the strainer or filter chambers 15 and the outlet ports 17 by passagevvays19. these passagetvays being formed by partitions 20, 21, and 22. Valve caps or housings 23 and 24 are pro-y vided for the inlet andl outlet ends respectively of the strainer body 10. t The strainers 11 are of cylindrical basket form, that is, they are intended to conform tothe strainerchamber's 15, and are of suitable material fory straining fluid therethrough. Each of the strainer baskets 11 has at its mouth an' annular flange member 33 with an. annular disk or ring'- plate 34 thereon, which disk or ring plate 34 forms a flange extending vbeyond the member 33 and may be integral with the member 33 or' suitably secured thereto, the purpose' of the annular disk or ring plate 34 being to engage a ledge 35 formed on the interior of the strainer chambers 15 for supporting the strainer basket in the strainer chamber, with t space of the strainer chamber Varound the circumference of the strainer. A. bail 36, either integral With or suitably secured to the strainer, is provided for each of the strainerbaskets 11, 4the bails 36 extending somewhat above the line of the open ends of the strainer chambers for the purpose laterstated. A cap, or cover, such as 37 is provided for the open end of each strainer chamber, the caps 37 being removably secured lto the strainer body 10" by bolts 38 passing through the caps. Each cap has a gasket or Washer 39 of suitable material for `preventing leakage from the strainer chamber. Each cap 37 is so constructed that the under side of the cap Will engage or press upon the end of the bail 36 Whenth'e cap 37 is in closing position and the strainer basket is in operative condition in the strainer chamber; the intention being that the annular disk or ring plate 34 Will be forced down into close contacter engagement with the upper face of the ledge 35 of the strainer chamber, thus providing fluid tight connec-v tion bet-Ween these members, and permitting no liquid, other than the liquid which passes through the vstrainer basket and is strained or purified, to pass out through the outlet` port.
The outlet valves generally denoted by 13 each comprise the valve member 40, Fig. 2, whichisa plate having an extended edge portion Al1-and an extended under portion `42, which provides the valve face for engaging the outer surface of the outlet end of the strainer body 10, such face and surface being ground or otherwiseJ prepared to afford fluid tight engagement therebetween. The eX- tended edge portion 42 has apertures 43 therethrough.
The-strainer body 10 is bored straight througli from', the outlet end? as at 44to' the inlet end as at 45, theb'orings at the inlet end being enlarged at 46 for the purpose later stated.
Each' of the valve members 40 is provided With valve stems 47 these valve stems extending freely through the apertures 43 and through the borings 44-45 into the inlet chamber 25.
The' valvefstems 47 are provided with collars 48., pinned or otherwise suitably secured thereto, and located in the space between the extended edge portion 41 of the valve members and the outer surface of the outlet end of the vstrainer body 10. Spherical seated Washers 49, retained by the collars 50, encircle the valve stems 47 and seat upon the extended vedge.v portion 41, thus ensuring the valves 13 cronforming to their seats' on the surface of the outlet endy of the strainer body 10,.
Packing 51 is arranged around the valve stems 47 in the enlargement 46 of the borings 444- for preventing leakage from the inlet chamber 25 to the outletI chamber 26,
the packing being retained by threaded bushings 52.
The 'valve stems 47 are provided near the ends thereof Within ythe inlet chamber with collars 53 extend-ing outwardly from the valve stems, and are `provided at the ends of the valve stems with heads 54 eX- tending outwardly from the valve stems.
A Wedge' vabutment member 55 is providedv for each associated pair of valve i. stems 47, the 'associated valve stems passing rlhe Wedge abutment member 55 of one` pair of associ-ated valve stems 47 is `flexibly or movably connected yto the corresponding rectangular form and has a face for cover' ing either of the inlet yports 16, as the case may be, by engagement with the surface of the adjacent end of the strainer body 10,`
the face of the valve member and this surface beingv ground or otherwise suitably prepared to afford fluid tight connection therebetween. The valve member 63 has on two of its sides extended port-ions 65 having inclined surfaces 65L for engagement with the inclined surfaces 57 of the wedge abutment member 55. The valve member 63 is provided with a rectangular inner space closed on three sides and open on the remaining side except as closed by the wedge 64.
The wedge 64 is suitably secured, as by the screws 67, to the'valve member 63, in position closing the space 66, or the wedge may be integral with the valve member 63. The wedge 64 is provided with inclined surfaces or faces such as 68 and 68, for engagement with the inclined surfaces 58 and 58a respectively of the wedge abutment members 55, the object being that the greater inclined surface 68 on the lwedge 64 of the valve 12 will engage the greater inclined surface 58 on the wedge abutment member 55'thereby forcing this member outwards and by means of the connecting rods or valve stems 47 bringing the outlet valvev 13 towards its seat, but not quite seating it, after which the lesser inclined surface 68a on the inlet valve 12 will engage the lesser inclined surface 58n on the wedge abutment member 55, thereby pulling the outlet valve 13 firmly and tightly against its seat, and simultaneously therewith forcing the single common inlet valve 12 firmly and tightly against its seat thus preventing fluid from entering strainer chamber with which the ports, closed by the valves, communicate.
An interiorly -threaded nut 69 is received in the space 66 of the valve member 63, the body of the nut occupying said space, and the nut being provided with outstanding {ianges 70 and 71 which engage sides of the valve member 63 between the nut and valveimember 63 and wedge 64, to allow the valve 12 to conform to its seat.
The inlet valve cap or housing 23 is provided with an extension y7 2 having on opposite sides of the cap or housing recesses 73 and 74 therein threaded for a. portion of their dept-h, these recesses. communicating with the outlet chamber 26 by apertures 75 through the valve cap or housing 23. An exteriorly threaded bushing 76 and a thrust collar 77 and neck 78 of the member 14 is received in the recess 7 3 and adjacent aperture 7 5, the bushing 76 having an outward fiange 79 which engages the outer side of t-he. extension 72 of the cap or housing 23, the bushing 76 having another exteriorly threaded extension 8O which provides space for receiving therein packing 81 of suitable material, retained in place by a bored nut 82, whichin turnJ is retained by a bored cap vnut 83 engaging the threaded extension 8O of the bushing 76. An exteriorly threaded bushing 84 having a neck 85 is received in the recess` 74 and adjacent aperture 7 The actuating member 14 is a rod or shaft having at one end a suitable means for op-A eration, as'the hand wheel 86, the rod or shaft having thereon for a portion of its length a screw thread 87. f 1
The actuating member 14, when in operative position, passes through the cap nut 83,-
the retaining nut 82, the packing 81, the bushing 76, the rectangular nut 69, and' is seated at its end in the neck 85 of they bushing 84 for turning in said neck, the screw 87 being arranged to engage the thread of the rectangular nut 69 for movement of the single common inlet valve 12 by turning of the rod or shaft by the hand wheel 86, and the valve 12 having floating connection with its valve seat.
Each strainer chamber 15 may be provid-"y ed at its bottom with a suitable closable outlet, such as 88, for cleaning the strainer chamber. v
In operation. The device being in operative condition, and the ports of one strainerl chamber being closed by the single common inlet valve and the oppositely disposedl outlet valve with which it is engaged, by revolving the single handv wheel 86, and thereby the single threaded operative member 14, the single common inlet valve 12 is actuated' by the threaded portion 87 of the member 14 `and forced outward away from its seaty by the inclined'suface 65a on theinlet valve 12 sliding outward on the inclined surface 57 of the wedge abutment member 55, and simultaneously therewith and by the vsame means the outlet valve .13 with which the common inlet valve 12 is engaged by means of the wedge abutment member 55 and the connecting rods or valve stems 57, is also forced outward and away from its seat, the inlet andoutlet ports of the chamber being then open. After which the common inlet vlll') clined surface 68' thereon engages the .in clinedi surface 58 on. the Wedge abutmentmember thereby bringing the open outlet valve connected therewith` by connectingv rods or valve stems 47 towards its seat but not quite seating it, after which the inclined surface @St engages the inclined surface 58a thereby forcing the inlet valve 12 firmly and tightlyv against its seatv and-1 also simultaneously therewith pulling the outlet valve 13` with which the inlet valve is engaged firmly and tightly againstv its seat, the pair o't' inlet and out-let ports being then closed, and the clogged or 't'ouled strainer basket-in the chamber With Which the closed ports communicate may then be removed and cleaned. The pivoted link 60, by the' action of the inclined surfaces, completely opens' the outlet port valve after it has been nnseated and slightly opened, While the other outlet port valve. is being closed', and hold-s the open outlet valve open while the other air ot inlet and outlet ports remain closed. It will 13e-particularly noticed? that all this is accomplished by a single hand Wheel,
which revolves a sing-le threaded operative member.

In a strainer device, a pair of strainer chambers, an inlet and an outlet port for each strainer chamber, a single common inlet valve adapted to control the inlet portsof both strainer chambers alternately, an out-let valve for each' outlet port, means for substantially simultaneously opening either pair of inlet and outlet` ports of a strainer chamber, theoutlet valve of the outlet port being engaged With the common inlet valve controlling the corresponding inlet port, and by disengagement of said common inlet valve from said outlet valve said outlet' port controlled by said outletvalve is opened and the corresponding inlet port controlled by said common inlet valve is also opened, and means for disengaging said common inlet valve from the engaged outlet valve.

In a strainer device, a pair of strainer or filter chambers, each of which has an inlet for fluid thereto and anoutlet for fluid therefrom; individual means for each strainer or filter chamber for openingV or closing the fluid outlet therefrom; common means for opening or closing the fluid inlet of either of the strainer `or ,filter chambers and operably connected for closing the out! let means of one ofthe strainer or' filter chambers when the fluid inletl of such strainer or filter chamber is `closed by said common means and for opening by the same operation of the common means the fluid inlet and the individual outlet meansof the other strainer or filter chamber; and means for actuating the' common means.

In a strainerlfdevice, a pair of strainer chambers, an inlet chamber common to said strainer chambers, an inlet port and an out let port for each strainer chamber the inlet ports communicating with the commoninlet chamber, a separate outlet valve for each outlet port, a common valve for closing the inlet port of either strainer chamber and substantially simultaneously opening the inlet port of the other strainer chamber by actuation of the common valve, means appurtenant to the valves of the outlet ports operatively connected to said common valve, and means for actuating the common inlet valve; said appurtenant means, -When the common inlet valve is actuated for closing the inlet port of either strainer chamber, closing the valve of the outlet port cooperating With said inlet port closed by actuation of the common inlet valve, and substantially simultaneously opening the valve of the outlet port cooperating with lsaid inlet port opened by said actuation of the common inlet valve.
20. In a strainer device, a pair of strainer chambers, an inlet chamber common to said strainer chambers, an inlet port and an outlet port communicating With the common inlet chamber, a separate outlet valve for each outlet port, a common valve for closing the inlet port of either strainer chamber and substantially simultaneously opening the inlet port ot the other strainer chamber by actuation of the common inlet valve, means appurtenant to the valves of the outlet port-s engageable With the common inlet valve` and means `for actuating the common inlet valve; said appurtenant means, when the common inlet valve is actuated for closing the valve of the inlet port of either strainer chamber, engaging the common inlet valve for closing the valve of the outlet port cooperating with said inlet port closed by actuation of the common inlet valve, and substantially simultaneously opening the valve of the outlet port cooperating with said inlet port opened by said actuation of the common inlet valve.

In a strainer or filter device, the combination of a body having a pair of inlet ports and a pair of outlet ports, an outlet port of theypair of outlet ports oppositely disposed to an inlet port of the pair of inlet ports; an individual valve for each outlet port; a stem for each of said outlet valves provided with an abutment member; means for preventing leakage past said stems; means for movably connecting said outlet valves; a valve engageable with either of said inlet ports and engageable With the abutment member of the stem of either of the outlet valves, and movable for engagement with the abutment member of the stem of either of said outlet valves to actuate the stem of such outlet valve to close the outlet cooperating with said outlet valve, and said engageable valve closing the inlet port oppositely disposed to the outlet port so-closed,
and said means movably connecting the outlet valves, when the abutment member is engaged by said valve, moving the other outlet valve to open the outlet port oppositely disposed to the inlet port opened by the movement of said valve.
