it appertains to make and use the same My invention relates to improvements in journal boxes especially adapted for use with truck side frames of the type set for h in my. co-pendingapplication. Serial Lati- 595,099, filed Octoberl'l, 1922, and of. which my present invention is, a continuation in part. Y
a journal box having portions shaped to conform to and arranged to engage portions of a car truck side frame. the particular shape of said portions permitting theiise of a maximum amount of metal in the side frame at the critical points therein and also providing for the economical and efiicient casting of the journal box in the mold.
Another object of the invention is to produce a journal box provided with a portion adapted to fit within a journal. box recess in the side frame, said journaTbox being formed with means adapted to permit the journal box to be detachablv con nected to the side frame and maintained in bearing-like contact with the walls of said recess, said means involving longitudinally arranged lugs adapted to embrace the outer faces of the opposite sidewalls of the side frame and receive easily inserted connecting pins or bolts.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a journal box having inwardly and upwardly converging side walls suitably merged into the top of the journal box at different inclinations or angles.
whereby in the manufacture of the journal box it will! be possible to part the mold on a line passing through the center of the attaching lugs for that portion of the journal box at the front and rear of said lugs, and also permit of the portion of the side, walls between the attaching lugs being shaped sothat said portion, which is preferably cored in practice, is parted on a line below said first named parting line of the l the claims: r An object of my invention is to provide car axle illustrated.

mold, thereby aflording greater cross secti n re the d ce i e ram w l in which the journal box recess. is formed.
instill further object of the invention is to provide a ournal box possessing the ady niase-= v a ove n te the. nte ior o the journal box bemgmamtained of a shape and size capable .of receiving the standard, equipment including the A; R. A. brass.
Withthese, and other objects in view, the invention further consists in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, together with the method o f'manufacturing my improvedjournal box.
In the drawings illustrating the; invention. the scope whereof is "pointed out in Figure '1. is a View partl vation and partly in section of my im proved journal box, thesame being shown attached to a portion of the cartruckv side frame. 1 I
Figure 2 isja vertical sectional view transversely through the side frame showing, my improved journal box with the upper portion engaging the journal boxrecess of the side frame. the car axle and other parts of the journal box being omitted. I V
Figure 3 is, a top plan view of, the jourin side eleake 1 nal, box with parts in horizontal section,
opposite portionsof the side walls or abutments of the journal. box recesses being I shown in section. with the atta ching pins .or bolts passing therethrough.
Figure el is a'detail one-halfhorizontal sectional view on the line 4: of Figure 2, a portion of the brass and wedgebeing shown in position above. the portion of the Figure 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view on the line 55 of F ignre 4.
Figures 6 and 7 are similar views on the lines .6-.6 and 7-'7 of Figure 4.
Referring to the drawingsin which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views, my improved journal box I is shown attached to a truck side frame 2 preferably formed with an inner wall 3and an outer wall. 4. 5 A journal box recess 5 is provided near each end of the side frame, said recess being provided. withopposite abutment Walls 6 and 7 which are inwardly and upwardly converged said abutment walls being merged into and'united with the top wall 8 of the journal box recess. The wall portions of the side frame forming the journal box recess are preferably constructed from marginal inturned flanges .9 formed integrally with the side walls 8 and 1, said flanges be- .ing preferably united or abutted within the invention, however, I have shown the journal box associated with a journal box recess formed in the pressed metal side frame, the usual brass 10 and wedge 11 beingfitted about the car axle within the journal box, all in theusual manner.
The journal box 1 is provided with side walls 12 united at their lower ends by the I bottom 13 and at their upper ends by the top Portions of the journal box are of the usual construction and may be-provided with such parts as the journal box lid and dust-guard, not shown. The top wall portion 14 is preferably formed with a plurality of intersecting transversely and longi- 'tudinally disposed ribs 15 having their upper edges preferably shaped to conform to the contour of the upper wall 8 of the journal box recess. The end portions of the longitudinal or axially arranged ribs are shaped to extend about the corner bends which unite the side walls of the side frame with the marginal inturned edges thereof, as best shown in Figure 2; Lateral thrusts 'ofthe side frame with respect to the journal box are partly taken by the end portions of the ribs adjacent the aforesaid corner bends. The configuration of the journal box top forms a desirable bearing surface contacting the side frame and provides a strong construction of comparatively light weight.
The journal box is provided with means peri iitting its ready attachment to the truck side frame, said means including spaced longitudinally disposed lugs 16 and 17, said lugs embracing the respective inner and outer side walls of the side frame and each being provided with an opening 18. Registering openings 19 are provided in the side walls of the side frame and through the registering openings 18 and 1 9 connecting pins or bolts 20 are inserted, as clearly shown in Figure 3. Each pin 20 is provided at one end with a head 21, the opposite end of the pin being preferably perforated to-receive the cotter22. The pins 20 are preferably designed to fit loosely within the registering openings inthe slde walls and lugs, thereby permitting the longitudinal thrusts ofthe side frame to be principally taken by the abutment walls 6. and 7 lining the journal box recess. The attaching lugs or projections provided on the journal box are preferably slightly spaced from the side walls of the side frame to provide clearance which, together with the relatively loose pin-connections, permits any transverse.
the front and rear of the journal box, the beglnnmg of sald convergence occurring on a line passing through the center of the pin k openings 18 provided in the lugs 16 and 17. The inclinations or angles of these portions of each side wall are clearly shown in Figures 5 and 6, the horizontal line (1*(1 passing through the center of the openings in the lugs indicating the. parting line of the mold in which the journal box is cast for that portion of said journal box to the front and rear of the attaching lugs. Each side wall is provided with a portion between the attaching lugs, each portion being converged upwardly and inwardly, the beginning of said convergence being'located in a horizontal plane below the parting line aa, passing through the center of the pin openings 18. The angle or inclination of this intermediate portion disposed between the attaching lugs is best shown in Figure 7, the line 22-45 indicating generally the beginning of the convergence of said portion at a point where this portion of the mold is separated. In practice it is usual to core out this portion of the casting between the attaching lugs, and it is because of this practice that the convergence of the side walls between the; lugs can be'lengthened with the advantage of permitting the use of a comparatively greater cross sectional area of metal in the pressed metal side frame between the outer journal box abutment wall 7 and the extreme end of theside frame. The increase of metal in the side frame blank at these points, which are some of the critical points of the side frame, is
of great benefit in resisting the strains incident to service conditions My improved method of manufacturing a journal box of the class referred to consists in shaping portions of the side walls of the journal box so as'to conformto the portion of the side frame with which the journal box contacts, said side Wall portions being inwardly converged at their upper ends so as to provide for-the use of a maximum quantity of metal in the side frame and at the same time permit the portions of the side walls at the front and rear ofthe journal box to be so shaped as to be easily cast in a mold which latter can be readily parted. It will also be noted that my improved mama journal box is arranged for production in a mold capable of being parted on the center line of the attaching pin openings for that portion of the journal box which lies to the front and to the rear of the attaching lugs or projections. The portion of the side walls of the journal box between the attaching lugs is designed for parting below theline of the pin openings. This is dsirable in practice in order to obtain the advantageous side frame construction referred to herein, and at the same time provide a construction which will not interfere with the molding of the journal box, because the portion between the pin lugs is preferably cored out, and the portions of the side wall outside of the pin lugs can be parted on the regular parting line of the mold which in my present embodiment is disposed in the same horizontal plane or center line passing through the pin openings.
