specification.
This invention relates, generally,-to improvements in paper cartons orco'ntainer's;
and, the invention has reference," morepan ticularl to a novel carton or containerfor holding and dispensing rolled sheet material,
and said carton orcontainer being of the folding type which is made up from a single piece of card-boarder the 'like.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a .novel carton or container in which may be enclosed a roll of sheet mate rial; said carton or container having a novel means through which the free end of the enclosed roll of sheet material may issue and through which it may be drawn to dispense desired lengths of such sheet material. v
for detachment from the main body thereof.
\Vi'th such end in View, the novel carton or container comprises, in combination with a main body member and end flaps scored and folded to form the longitudinal sides and ends of the carton or containerfcertain additional foldable members adapted to provide a novel delivery means having a guiding exit passage through which may issue the free end of the roll of sheet material enclosed within the carton or container; the free longitudinal edge of said novel delivery means also providing a means against which the withdrawn end portion of the sheet material may be torn or severed to detach the same from the main body of said rolled sheet'material remaining .within the carton or container.- The novel carton or container is adapted to hold and dispense from a roll thereof such materials as waxed or parafiine paper, paper toweling, paper for napkins, toilet paper, wrapping paper or any other similar products.
Other objects of this invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
\Vith the various objects of this invention in view the same consists, primarily, in the novel carton or container for holding and dispensing rolled sheet material hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the claims appended thereto.
The invention is clearly illustrated accompanying drawings, in which v Figures 1, 2 and ,3 are respectively perspective views of the complete carton or container, made according to and embodying the principles of this invention, said views showing various ways of positioning the carton or container for use when dispensing the enclosed sheet material therefrom.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the blank adapted to be folded so as to provide the novel rolled sheet material holding and dispensing container sh0wn""'respectively in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the novel carton or container with the delivery ,means in the partly made up; and Figure 6 is a transversesection, taken on line 6-6 in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a plan view of the novel carton or container completed; and Figure 8 is a transverse section, taken on line 8--8 in Figure 7.
Figure 9 is a fragmentary perspective view of a plurality of the novel cartons or containers, illustrating the manner in which the same are arranged and interrelated together when packing the same for shipment or carriage.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the drawings and more especially to Figure 4 thereof, the reference character '1 indicates a paper or cardboard blank from which the novel carton or container is formed. The said blank-is provided with a series of longitudinal scores or scribes, as indicated by the dotted lines 2,
or tongues 13, the junctures of which with the extremities of said panel 9 are defined by the scores or scribes 14. Also extending outwardly from each end of the 'panel 10 are folda e exterior end tabs or tongue 15,
the jiin'c't'ures of which with the extremities of the panel 10 are defined by the scores or scribes 16, and connected with the free end of each exterior tab or tongue 15 is a tuckfiap 17, the juncture of which with said exterior tab or tongue 15 is defined by the score or scribe 18. i
Extending along/the outer longitudinal scored'edge of the panel 7 is a top delivery guide panel 19, which in turn is provide along its outer longitudinal side with a longitudinal combined reenforcing and pocket forming flap 20, the juncture of which with said top delivery guide panel 19 is defined by the score or scribe 21'. The body of said top delivery guide panel 19 is provided in a suitable location intermediate its ends with an opening or slot 22, and said flap 20' is also provided with a corresponding open-- ing or slot 23. Said flap '20 is further provided, adjacent to each end thereof, with P a transverse slit 2 1.
Extending along the outer longitudinal scored edge of the panel 10 is a bottom delivery guide panel 25. Extending outwardly from each end of .the bottom delivery guide panel 25 are foldable locktongues 26, the junctures of which with the extremities of said panel 25 are defined by the scores or scribes 27. The side edges of said lock-tongues 26 are preferably converging toward the outer free ends thereof, and each tongue is provided atone of its side edge portions with a laterally projecting lock-nosing 28 which provides a shoulder or stop 29, the purpose of which will subse uently appear. The body of said bottom elivery guide panel 25 is provided intermediate its ends with an opening or slot 30.
The blank, thus above described in detail, is set up to form the novel carton or container inthe following manner. The panels 7, 8, 9 and 10 are folded along the lines of intermediate scores or scribes 3, Land 5, so as to be successively positioned at right angles, thus forming the four longitudinal sides of the carton or container which euclose a longitudinal storage or holding space spectively or interior 31, in which may be disposed a roll 32 of the sheet materialit is desired to dispense from said carton or container. The said carton orcontainer is closed at its ends by first turning or folding inwardly, across the open ends of the holding space or interior 31, the respective end tabs or tongues 11 and 13, and then by turning or folding over the exterior end tabs or tongues 15, with the tuck-flaps 17 inserted intermediate the ends of the opposite panel 8 and the adjacent edges of the folded tabs or tongues 11 and 13. When the formation of the carton or container is thus far completed, the bottom delivery guide panel 25 is left to extend outwardly from one lower longitudinal edge or 1 back across the outer side of said top delivery guide, panel 19. The respective longitudinal marginal portions of said flap 20 are provided, on the face thereof which is to meet and over-lie said top delivery guide panel 19, with longitudinal strips or zones of adhesive material, whereby said flap 20 is caused to permanently secured to the top delivery guide panel 19, so that not only is the latter reenforced and stiflened, but an internal cket intermediate thesaid parts is formed, with which the transverse slits 24 communicate. The arrangement or mutual cooperative relation thus established between the. bottom delivery guide panel 25 and top delivery guide panel 19, provides an intermediate passageway or guideway 33 which is open at its outer side and which communicates at its inner side with the interior 31 of the completed carton or container; The lateral ends of said passageway or guideway 33 are closed, and at the same time said top and bottom delivery guide panels 19 and 25 are operatively interlocked together, by turning upwardly and inwardly the lock-tongues 26, and inserting their free ends respectively through the respective slits 24, to enter the same in the pocket intermediate the top delivery guide panel 19 and the flap 20, with the lock-nosings 28 internally disposed in said pocket, and the shoulders or stops 29 reinterlocked against one end reof each slit 24. Vhen the top and bottom delivery guide panels 19 and 25 are thus operatively interconnected, the openings or slots 22 and 23 of the panel 19 and flap'20 will be registered together to provide access to material extending spectively adhere to and be thus llO through the pasageway or guideway 33, and at the same time the openlng or slot 30 of the panel 25.will be alined opposite the registered openings or slots 22 and 23. The free end portion 34 of the roll of sheetmaterial disposed within the interior 31 of the carton or container is extended or entered within so as to pass outwardly through the passageway or guideway 33.
The novel carton or container, constructed as above described, provides a very convenient means for holding and dispensing por- ,tions of sheet material of any desired length from a roll of latter enclosed within the said carton or container, while at the same time the carton or container adequately rotects the roll of sheet material against physical injury and from being soiled or in any way contaminated. The carton or container may be variously. positioned for use, when dispensing the sheet material therefrom. For example, as shown in Figure 1, it may be laid upon a counter or table, with the delivery guide means projecting from the bo ttom side thereof and lying flatwise upon the surfaceof the counter or table. When so disposed, and it is desired to withdraw a portion of the sheet material therefrom, the user engages the free end portion 34 of said sheet material, which is lodged within the passageway or guideway 33, by inserting the finger through the registered slots 22 and 23 and pressing the paper against the surface of the counter or table while at the same time moving forward-the finger toward the discharge end of saidpassageway or guideway 33. Such operation slides the extremity of the free end portion 34 of the sheet material outwardly through the discharge end of the passageway or guideway 33, to expose the same to the grasp of the user, who upon grasping the outwardly projecting extremity may pull outward the sheet material, which will be caused to unroll from the roll 32, until a desired length of the same has issued from the discharge end, of said passageway or guideway 33. The user may then tear off the withdrawn portion of the sheet material, by lifting the same and tear- "ing the same against the outer edge portion of the delivery means, as illustrated in Figure 1. The carton or container may be laid upon the edge portion or ledge of a counter, so that the delivery means depends therefrom and is vertically disposed against a perpendicular wall surface, as shown in Figure 2. In such case the user inserts the finger through the opening or slot 30 and presses the free end portion 34 of the sheet material through the registered openings or slots 22 and 23 and against the wall surface while. moving the finger downward, to thus eject fromthe discharge end of the passageway or guideway the extremity of the sheet material, so that the latter may be grasped Vhen it is desired to pack together a iuniber of the novel cartons or containers with their contents, so that the same may be shipped or transported, the same are arranged as shown in Figure 9, wherein it will be seen that the same are arranged in pairs or couples with theirnormally outvardly projecting delivery means respectively turned upward and downward and overlapped to lie against the sides of the main bodies thereof. It will be noticed that when thus arranged, the cartons or containers may be compactly grouped together for enclosure in a rectangular package or carrying container, and that all parts are adequately protected against injury during transit.
