To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOSEPH and CARL Hnnnnnsomcitizens of the'United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook-andState'of Illinois, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Preliminary Side-Register Means,
of which the following is aspecification;

Secured to the shaft 17 are two arms .18, in the outer ends of which is :mounted a shaft 19 carrying two drop rolls .20; Mounted on the shaft 19 a gear 21 meshing with a suitably supported intermediate gear 22 in turn meshing with a gear 23 loosely mounted on shaft 17 which gear 23 in turn may be driven from a. gear on one of the rollers liZ'. The drop rolls 20 are .driven in a counterclockwise direction, as
viewed in Figure 1, for the purpose of assisting in the progressive feeding of paper which is fed between the rolls 20 and under preparatory to receiving a sheet of paper by the action of a cam 24: mounted on a shaftr25,; a roller 26 mounted in one arm 27 of a bell crank lever 28cooperat1ng with sald cam. The bell crank lever 28 1s pivoted at 29 and has asecond arm 30 to which member 4st fixedto the shaft 17. parent,therefore, that as the bell crank lever one end of a link 31 is pivoted, the other end being pivotally connected to one end of an arm 32 fixed to the shaft 17. It is seen, therefore, that as the cam 24 is rotated, the drop rolls are given an'np and down movement, thenpward movement of the drop rolls 2-0 permitting the release of said sheet at the time that it passes into operative association with the main register mecha nisni 13.
As soon as a sheet ofpaper'is received between and engaged by the drop rolls 20 and theassoc-iated minder rolls 12, the sheet is given a'si'dewise or lateral movement for a preliininarylside register of the sheet. This lateral movement is effected through a second cam 33 mounted on shaft and properly timed with respect to the associated ca'm Qet'td'frinction in the proper sequence. Cooperating with the cam is aro'ller 3e mounted in one arm 85 of a bell crank lever 36 pivoted at 3? and having a secono arm 38fto'which one end of a link 39 is pivoted, the other end of said link being operatively connected to one arm &0 of a T-shaped lever piv' ot'ed at the upper end of its stem as at iii. Accordingly, means have been provided tolimit movement of the shaft 17 toward the side of the press in accordance with side register conditions, any excess inth'e'throw caused by thecam 33 being absorbed bya-spring 46 coiled around link 39 and interposed between a nut 47 on said link and an abutment 48011 the T-sliaped lever in-which one end of the link 39 is slidably mounted.' I p In eonnectionwith the lateral movement of the sheet, the shaft 17 is provided with a rick member 49 having oppositely directed teeth at its opposite ends and which permits rotary oscillatory movement of the shaft 1? without a corresponding movement of the rack, the latter being mounted on top of the shaft 1'? in a slot 530 in one of the brackets 16. The rack member -l9 is lined on the shaft-17, in so fa as endwise movement is conceried, by engaging the collar member on one end and at the other end engaging another collar 51 fixed to the shaft 1?. Cooperating with therack a pawl pivotallv mounted at 53in the bracket 16. one 'end of the pawl beingoperatively connectedat 5-: to a movable core 55 mounted in a-m-agi'ict' or solenoid winding 56 so that when the solenoid is ener ized, the operative end of the pawl 52, against'the tension of'a spring 57, is forced into operative engagement with the rack e9 for preventing further endwise movement of the shaft 17 in the direction in which it was traveling, thereby preventing further lateral iovenient of the sheet being-handled for side registering; The energization of the solenoid is controlled by a side detector lin er 58 which extends downwardlv 111 the k a stationary shaft 62. The detector f nger 58 is carried by a pivotally mounted bracket 6-3, which carries"tin-electrical contact 6% adapted to close an electric circuit when passed into engagement Mltll an electrical contact carried by a finger 66, .the latter of which is connected to a battery or source of electrical energy 67. Accordlngly, 1t will be appreciated that when a sheet of paper is fed laterally by drop rolls 20 during end'wise movement of shaft 17 and said sheet engages the detector finger 58, causing the lattcr'to close the electric circuit at, its contacts 6e and 65, the solenoid 56 will be energi'zed'fo'r throwing the. pawl 52 into engagement with the rack 49' for stopping furtherendwise movement of the shaft'17, and, therefore, further lateral "movement of the sheetofp'aper, any excess in the throw caused by the cam 33 being absorbed by'thc spring et6; As soon as the sheet passes progressively forwardly away'from the detector linger '58, thedetector finger"automatically will swing in a manner to break the electric circuit at contacts 54 and (35, causing a (leenergizatioirof thesolenoid 56, whereupon the spring 57 will draw the pawl 52 out of engageinent with "thera'ck +19, and the shaft tions from the cam 33 are changed from the arm to arm of the T-shaped lever for registering the sheet-at the opposite side of the press, the pawl 52 willfunction with the teeth at the opposite end of the rack 49, the pawl 52then being pivotally mounted in its opposite pivotal supportfiS),theactive end of the pawl 52 being pointed in the opposite direction. 7
It is the intention to cover all modifica tions of the invention fallin within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
lVe claim:
1. In printing press side registering means, a member for moving asheet laterally, and means actuated by the sheet for limiting lateral movement of the sheet by electrically controlling movement of said member. I I
' 2. In printing pressside register means, the combination of means for moving a sheet for side registering, a member for limiting movement of. said means, and means including an electrical contact element ac tuated by the sheet, controlling the'movement of said member.
In printing press registering means,
the combination of a sheet carrying member movable for registeringa sheet,'a mechanical stop for'limiting movement of said member, a magnet for operating said stop member, and means responsive to movement of the sheet for controlling the circuit of sheet for controlling said pawl to sheet for registering, a rack movable therei with, a pawl for engaging said rack to stop movement of said member, and a magnet re: sponsive to registering movement of the stop the movement of said member.
5. In printing press registering means, a member for moving a sheet for registering, a rack movable with said member, a pawl for limiting movement of said member and said rack, a magnet for actuating said pawl, and a mechanically operated member movable in accordance with registering conditions for electrically controlling the circuit of said magnet.
6. In printing press side registering means, the combination of an endwise movable shaft, a member mounted thereon for moving a sheet for side registering, a rack movable with said shaft, a pawl for stopping movement of said sheet carrying member, a magnet for actuating said pawl, and a mechanically operated member movable in response to side registering conditions for controlling the circuit of said magnet.
