UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN WILDT, OF LEICESTER, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO WILDT AND COMPANY, LIMIT- ED, OF LEICESTER, ENGLAND, A BRITISH COMPANY.
STOP MOTION FOR YARN, THREAD. AND LIKE WINDING MACHINES.
Application filed September 24, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN Winn-:2, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Leicester, in the county of Leicester. England, have invented new and useful improvements in or Relating to Stop Motions for Yarn, Thread, and like \Vinoling Machines, of which the following is a spe ification.
The invention relates to unlchiru-s for winding yarns, threads and the like from banks on to bobbins or like members and concerns those of the kind provided with a stop motion for automatically stopping;
rotation of the bobbin or equivalent when the tension on the winding yarn or thread is abnormally increased.
In machines of this kind the bank, from which the yarn or thread. is drawn for wind ing, is usually carried upon what is termed a swift. This carrier is mounted in a rotatable manner and is rotated by the yarn being drawn therefrom. lVhen the stop motion becomes effective and arrests rotation of the bobbin or other device upon which the yarn is being wound there is a tendency for the swift or hank carrier, owing to the momentum set up by its rotation, to overrun i. e. continue to rotate after the bobbin has stopped. This liable to drag or ravel the yarn and sometimes to such an extent as to break it.
The object of the invention is to provide means which will operate in conjunction with the stop motion to arrest rotation of the swift or hank carrier when said stop motion operates to arrest rotation of the bobbin or other device upon which the yarn or thread is being wound.
By positively arresting the rotation of the swift when the winding spindle stops, overrunning of the swift is prevented. This is an important improvement in connection with the winding of yarns by reason of the fact that the elimination of the possibility of overrun enables the machine to be driven at a much higher speed than heretofore, consequently the yarn can be more quickly wound and the output of the machine increased.
According to the invention a brake or other suitable stopping device is provided for arresting rotation of the swift or bank carrier said brake or device being operable Serial No. 739,468.
by intermediate connections actuated by a part of the stop motion of the winding machine.
In the preferred arrangement the brake or stopping device is normally held out of action by a spring or weight and the operating connections are acted upon by the member of the stop motion which is controlled by the winding yarn.
In further describing the invention refer ence will be hereinafter made to the accompanying drawings wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section, and
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of a convenient embodiment of the invention, showing the brake device and the stop motion in the inoperative position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1., but shows the brake and the stop motion in the operative position, and
Figure 4 is a side elevation partly in section for partly releasing the brake device and stop motion after the operation thereof, to permit of the bobbin spindle being rotated by hand as will be hereinafter described.
According to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, a brake shoe 1 pivotally mounted on the underframe member 2 which carries the swift or hank carrier 3 is controlled by a tension spring 4 and normal-- ly held clear of a hub 5 on the swift or hank carrier. The brake shoe 1 is pressed into contact with the hub by a push rod 6 slidable in lugs 7 on the member 2, one end of which push rod acts upon said shoe the other end being acted upon by a lever or bar 8 also pivoted on the under frame member 2. This bar or lever is moved by a suitable part of the stop motion. For example, the mechanism constituting the present invention may be used in conjunction with a stop motion of the kind wherein a lever held in normal position by a spring o weight is operated by abnormal tension of the yarn to stop rotation of the bobbin spindle. An arrangement of this nature is illustrated in the accompanying drawings. In said arrangement a lever 9 is fulcrummed upon a bracket 10 attached to a cross member 11 on the machine frame and has connected therewith an arm 12 carrying a. roller 13 or equivalent adapted in normal position to engage one end of a lift lever 14, pivoted on the bracket 10, so as to maintain the other end of said lever out of engagement with the usual driver disc on the bobbin spindle 16 against the action of a spring 17, or equivalent. The yarn or thread represented by the dot and dash line 18 passes from the swift 3 over a bar 19 through a knot plate 20 round guide pulleys 21 and 22 on the lever 9 and a pivoted arm 23 respectively and thence to the bobbin 24. Referring now to Figure 3, if for any reason the tension of the yarn becomes abnormal the lever 9 is pulled downwards thereby breaking the engagement between the roller 13 and the lift lever 14 whereupon the lever 9 falls and strikes the pivoted lever or bars 8 which through the medium of the push rod 6 applies the brake shoe 1 to the hub 5 of the swift or hank carrier to arrest rotation of the latter. At the same time the lift lever 14 is actuated by its spring 17 to disengage the disc 15 from the usual driving wheel 25 and lifts it into contact with a brake pad 26 on the bracket 10 thereby stopping the winding spindle.
If desired, the aforesaid brake mechanism may be used in conjunction with the mechanism described in British specification No. 28480 of 1913, the yarn operated lever 1 referred to in said specification being arranged to strike and move the aforesaid lever or bar 8 to apply the brake 1 in the manner just described.
In order to enable the swift or hank carrier 3 and the bobbin spindle 16 to be rotated by hand, if necessary for re-threading or other purposes a fter the operation of the stop motion and the brake me -hanism as aforesaid, we may provide, in combination with said brake mechanism and stop motion, means for effecting a partial release of t same. Conveniently, such means comprise a handle 27 secured to a spindle rotatable in the bracket 10 and having thereon a lever formed by fingers :29 and 30. The finger 29 engages the lever 9 while the finger 30 engages the adjacent end oi" the lift lever it when the handle 27 is ac uated as shown in Figure 4, with the lever 9 and the lift lever 14 in the position shown in li igure Thus the lever 9 may be raised slightly to partly release the brake shoe 1 and at the same time the lever 14 may be partly released to allow the disc '15 to move sufficiently to clear the brake pad 26. During the movement of the handle 2? the finger 3t) enters a recess 31 in the lift lever 14 thus arresting the movement of the latter so as to prevent said disc from engaging the driving wheel The details of construction may be varied without departing from the scope of the invention.
