Description
Patented Mar. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES GEORGE F. SHEEHAN, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
COMPOSITION OF MATTER.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, Gnonen F. SHEEHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of \Vashington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Composition of Matter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a composition of matter and the object of my invention is to provide a composition of matter that when placed in any well known coking oven will produce a coke that may be used in metallurgy and for domestic use.
lVith this end in view my invention con sists incompounding peat with the desired percentage of bitumen, such as asphalt, tar pitch or gilsenite, the desired percentage of coking or carbonizing substance, such as free burning sulphur and the desired amount of moisture preventative such as fuel oil all of which are thoroughly mixed and placed in any well known coking oven to thereby coke the same.
This composition of matter may also be moulded into briquettes of the desired shape and size and used as a substitute for coal.
In preparing the composition I prefer to use the elements or ingredients in approximately the following proportions: 85 per cent peat, 8 per cent bitumen, 3 per cent crude sulphur, 4: per cent fuel oil.
Application filed November 4, 1924. Serial No. 747,709.
The above ingredients are compounded as follows:
The peat is thoroughly dried and is placed in a suitable container then the fuel oil is thoroughly mixed therewith then the crude sulphur is added and thoroughly mixed, and then the asphalt which has been heated from 150 degrees to 325 degrees is added and thoroughly mixed therewith. The resultant mixture is then allowed to cool whereupon it may be placed in a coking oven to thereby coke the same.
I have found by experiment that this composition of matter when mixed as above described will produce a coke that has a large percentage of carbon and is adapted for use in metallurgy and in places where coke is desirable for use.
What I claim is:
1. A composition of matter composed principally of peat and having a bituminous binder and containing a relatively small quantity of added fuel oil and also containing a relatively small quantity of added sulphur adapted to vulcanize the binder and produce coking of the fuel.
2. A composition of matter composed of 85 per cent peat, 3 per cent crude sulphur. t per cent fuel oil, and eight per cent asphaltum.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 80th day of October A. D.
GEORGE F. SHEEHAN.
